Where, Vz = The Design Wind Speed at height z.
V10 = the Basic Mean Hourly Wind Speed

6. DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS

6.1 Design Criteria

The design of Rapidwall load-bearing walls is based on the material properties and
design guidelines developed by the Australian inventor of the technology based on
rigorous experimental testing and validation done by third-parties. The structural
design is mainly based on British Standards and/or Codes of Practice.
The main aim of design is to provide a safe foundation & structure for carrying the
floor load acting on Rapidwall load bearing panels. It must carry all the loads coming
on the Rapidwall panel safely to the ground. These Rapidwall panels are either
RAS AL HAMRA DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (RAHDP) Contract No.: NA

Document No.: OSCO-RAH-8883--BOD-0001 Revision No.: 0

Document Title: Civil and Structural Design Basis Page 16 of 21

partially filled or completely filled with concrete and can be provided with different
reinforcement arrangement as per the structural requirement. The structure is also
proposed with RCC column and beam wherever required. The final location and
design of RCC element can be provided at final implementation stage.

6.2 Design Philosophy

The design capacities are based on limit states design procedures, considering the
ultimate limit state for strength design, treating the 3.0 m high Rapidwall panel as the
unit material, and considering the strength capacity as obtained from test results. The
design should be such that the structure should withstand safely all loads likely to act
on the structure during its lifetime. It shall also satisfy serviceability requirements. In
general, the structure shall be designed on the basis of the most critical limit state and
shall be checked for other limit states.

6.3 Limit State Design

For ensuring the design objectives, the design should be based on the characteristic
values of material strengths and applied loads (actions), which take into account the
probability of variations in material strength and load. The design values are derived
from the characteristic values through the use of partial safety factors, both for
material strengths and for loads, for limit states of collapse and serviceability.

6.4 Design Tools

Rapidwall design data book,
Load distribution chart,
3D Analysis design software like Staad Pro, Etabs etc.

7. DESIGN PARAMETERS

7.1 Stability Check Against overturning:

Minimum stability ratios against overturning will be calculated using service loads
only. Partial safety factors for loads will not be included in the design operation.
Effect of buoyancy will be considered, if any foundations are submerged in ground
water.
Stability ratios which will be used in the design to prevent foundation from
overturning are given in the Table 7-1 as follows:
RAS AL HAMRA DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (RAHDP) Contract No.: NA

Document No.: OSCO-RAH-8883--BOD-0001 Revision No.: 0

Document Title: Civil and Structural Design Basis Page 17 of 21

Table 7.1 Stability Ratio

Stability
Service Conditions
Ratio
F.O.S against Overturning 1.5

7.2 Sliding Stability:

Minimum stability ratio against sliding of foundation will be same as those for
Overturning.
If Passive earth pressure is considered for sliding stability check, the factor of safety
shall be 2.

7.3 Uplift Check

Factor of safety against uplift due to upward pull or buoyancy from ground water
table will be 1.50

7.4 Foundation Philosophy:

Shallow reinforced concrete foundations viz., isolated pad foundations, combined
foundations, raft foundations and strip foundations with or with-out tie beams will be
adopted for foundation works, based on the Geo-technical investigation details carried
out for this project.
Raft foundation is assumed to be rested on ground on firm base or as recommended in
the Geo-technical investigation report.
Partial safety factors for loads will not be included in the bearing pressure check
operation.
