    CHAPTER 6

    CONCLUSION

    By using DMAIC methodology, the production order lead time of the wet grinder product was
    investigated. The three critical factors affecting the lead time were identified namely material
    issue, material shortage and labour productivity. By improving the store room layout and
    generating a coding system, the material issue time was reduced around 25%. Three forth of
    assembly operation non productive time was reduced through assembly line balancing. The
    material shortage problem was literally nullified by implementing a software based material
    requirement planning. From this, the overall production order lead time was reduced around
    1000 minutes. Thus 70% reduction in order lead time was achieved. The figure 6.1 shows the
    percentage contribution by the factors before and after implementation of the project.
