Lesson Plan

Disposition #1

In my Practicum Pre-K-4 placement, I had the opportunity to teach a lesson to the sixth grade

students in second period. The teacher opened her classroom to me and said “Mi clase es tu clase.”

which is “My class is your class” in Spanish. I coordinated my lesson with what the students are currently

learning in science. Eventually, I finally figured out what I wanted to do.

Planning for this lesson was incredibly difficult for me. I have never worked with sixth grade

students, am not familiar with the curriculum, lost on what resources to use, and figuring out what could

be “cool” to them. The teacher gave me a curriculum book for science and I was able to read what they

are supposed to be learning about space. The topics I was given were anything gravity related, the moon,

phases, and eclipses. I chose to do a lesson on the phases of the moon with a little bit of gravity mixed in

at the beginning.

The most difficult part was creating the lesson plan and trying to find the standards that correlate

to my lesson. I ended up finding one that works as well as the big idea and essential question statement.

For the video, I needed one about the phases of the moon. Most of the ones that popped up were for

younger kids. I was teaching 12 and 13 year-olds. I found a moon phases rap song that included all of the

vocabulary and then some for the lesson.

I taught the lesson on April 20, 2023 for the second period class. I was very nervous and worried

that they would not like the video. They ended up loving it. The teacher saw them singing and dancing to

it, but they did not show that to me when I looked. When my lesson was over, the teacher gave me

feedback on what went well, what I needed to work on, and compliments. We discussed the feedback at

the end of class before I had to leave.

I feel that this experience has helped me to become more confident in what I am teaching, the

content I choose, and prepared me a little more for student teaching. It was a great experience to work

with the older students for a change. I stepped out of my comfort zone, which is uncomfortable, but I had

a great experience overall.
