The priority for our Co-op is reacting
positively to the wide-ranging challenges of the cost-of-living crisis. We need to balance escalating business and energy costs with the needs of hard pressed members and colleagues, and the important support we provide to local communities. I have been a leader in a co-operative society for many years, championing legislation to protect shopworker colleagues, the Fair Tax Mark and member-led community support schemes. I’m keen to hear from members and represent your views. Margaret Casely-Hayford Occupation Current Member Nominated Director

As a current Co-op MND, I continue to value
the relationship between ethical growth and commercial success, but want more focus on colleague pay and conditions, reduction of plastic waste, measures that improve environmental impact and greater diversity. The Board should be accountable to members. That’s achievable through information and transparency. Good boards should listen and collaborate with members. I want to encourage further co-operation within the community, member engagement and business success levels and commercial returns to ensure this. I led the Co-op’s farming business for 11
years. More recently as Groceries Code Adjudicator, I regulated the Co-op. I’ve been an insider and an outsider. I know first-hand that balancing commercial and co-operative isn’t always easy, but I care about co-op values. As your director, I’ll ensure members’ voices are at the heart of decisions - that means really listening to Co-op members, be they young or old, new or life-long, and whether in village, town or city communities. Having spent over 40 years working within
the Co-operative Movement, I have a keen interest in ensuring it thrives. All retailers, and the Co-op Group is no exception, face significant headwinds given the current economic conditions. The experience I gained as CEO of an Independent Society, before I retired, puts me in a unique position to support management in their mission to deliver commercial success, whilst being mindful of our responsibility to both members and the communities we serve.
