READING

2)READ the article and CHOOSE the correct answer below.

It really surprises me that approximately only 9 percent of the global population is left
handed. A true minority group that has to adapt to many different situations. How is that
possible? In the past, they used to think that people who were left-handed were bad and
they were condemned for that. Fortunately, these ideas have changed, especially since
the beginning of industrialisation. However, the world is still for right-handers: school
desks, scissors, the mouse, …
But, what’s the explanation for this difference? Why only 9% of the population?
Maybe, long ago it was left- handed people who were the majority and there was a
war between left and right-handers and the ‘rightists’
won. Not very scientific, but still an interesting theory, Uh?
I read in BBC News yesterday that a group of scientists have discovered a gene
which apparently increases the possibilities of being left-hand- ed: LRRTM1. A
possible explanation, isn’t it? They say that this gene plays a crucial role in
controlling which part of the brain takes control of specific functions. In this article,
they mention a lot of experiments that can prove this. But I don’t believe there’s an
absolute theory. In my case, for example, I’ve had an uncle and a great-grand uncle
who were left handed, but I’m not
