Module 4: Mini Paper

The activities for Module for focus on art as seen in various context. Art is said to be inseperatble from
the context from which it is conceptualized. Module 4 discusses the concept of art in terms of its economic
and ideological relations and how these concepts interlink art. Through different institutions and their
relation in the arts or rather how they impact the arts, this module explores the how institution play a
vital role in the production and circulation of art, their influences and how they construct the the concept
of art in our establlished society. Some of the topic related to this module are focused on the art
establishments, its distribution, class and economy, as an indipendent movement and the cultural
independent and self-publishing. The part on the art establishment, I find that the provided readings and
articles on the topic quite interesting. Although, due to the limitedness of time, I more likely focused on
the articles that are required by the modules set for the given activty. I have not fully read or rather
comphended the other readings although the articles such as those from Banky’s Shred Love article, I was
able to somehow grasp some of its concept and relation to art establishment due to the video provided
in the site. I saw how institutions such as the art market see art as a comoditized value. That people are
willing to spend millions for an art even when they are being destroyed in the process. The essay by
Christian Tablazon entitled “Ghost is ghost, no fiction” talks about the establishments (buidlings) errected
for the cause of art and how they are tied in the controversy of the Marcos regime. Well, although CCP
and PHSA are art establishment that further amplify the beauty, culture and importance of arts. These
kinds of establishment I have been on and I saw how art is build in its foundation. Although upon reading
the essay, what caught my attentions are the phrases or portion of the paragrph depicting the tragic
backstory of such establishment. Given in the essay shows a narrative that the Marcoses contribution in
the arts are built on the hardships of the people. As an example, the usage of blood sacrifice was mention.
This gives me the impresion on the subject that on things can not exist without the suffering and
contribution of the dead in the errection of an empire. Such examples detailed in the essay are the
countless souls that have died just for the construction of those establsihment. Blood and bodies became
the very foundation, as I have understood it, in the contribution in the arts. But the presence of such
establishment, with their grime background influence the production and circulation of art. Again, these
establishment are errected in the admiration, and further promotion of arts. People will go visit, pay a
fetty amount of price to sponsor events in the admiration of the arts. Museums and galleries as an
example are places, we go to to appreciate art. As I can see it this influence the production of art is because
art is again seen as a comoditized object. There is money in it. People will produce art, to make money for
more art. In the module part on distribution, class and economy, I somehow saw the same concept as art
being used in the industry. Macho dancing, although I find it absurd due to its nature, finds it that it can
still be used in the appreciation of the arts. As I have stated in my analysis on the subject, I saw that art
be used here questions how we view the roles of each member of society even on the professional levels.
Its relation to economy and the classes it caters with. Elisa Jocson showed the beauty of the human body
despite her representing it in the role that men should be the ideal object of the industry (Macho dancing).
These kinds of institutions, industries affect the arts because again there is money involve which will help
the economy. Part 3 focuses on the independent publishing movement of the arts. As I recall, the activity
I did for this spart is about the story on Adam David’s case on the copyrights. Well, upon reading there
are two things I got from the article: One, copyright is a very significant in the works of an individual/s as
it protects them from others stealing their works and secondly, the case of David’s work is justified
depending on how he has done it. Of course, the owner has the rights to sue him. One of the guide
questions I have encountered through out this module that caught my interest is that Can an artist truly
separate oneself from his/her work? For me, I think it is difficult to do so as the artist, especially if he/she
has greater influence through her work, can inspire others or their work of art can become a reminder to
many what they stand for. Art can be a legacy of an artist. And this can influence the production and
circulation of art as is brings about importance and relevance on a particular event, person and
establishment in bringing about context. Overall, this module is very intersting for me especially when I
start to read slowly the provided reading materials. But again, due to the overwheling loads and
requirements from other subject, I find less time to really grasp what the study is really about. I am hoping
that I may have more time to go back and spend time to read and understand these readings so I can fully
appreciate the arts. Although there are terminologies, names of people whom I have not heard of hence
also causes me to lose interest on the topics but I think I may be able to appreciate them if I can read
further on the materials.
