MATERIALS FORMING PROCESSES (MSE 411) ASSIGNMENT (10/11/2022)

1. By cold working, a strip of metal is reduced from 40 mm thickness to 20 mm.

A similar strip is reduced in a similar way from 50 mm to 30 mm.
(i) Which one of these cold worked strips will crystallize at a lower
temperature? Why? (5 marks)
(ii) Compare their grain sizes. (5 marks)

2. With all parameters standing as defined in the class, the expression for the
drawing stress,  d' under ideal frictionless conditions is given as
1
 d'   o' In
1 r
while a useful formula that includes friction, transverse stress and redundant
work is given as

 d'   o'
1 B

(1  (1  r ) B 
(a) A round wire made of perfectly plastic material with a yield stress of
207 MPa is being drawn from diameter 25.4 mm to17.78 mm in a
conical draw die of 15. Let the coefficient of friction be 0.1.
i. Using both expressions, estimate the drawing force, Fd required. (5
marks)
ii. Comment on the differences in your answers. (5 marks)
(b) Use problem (a) but for 304-stainless steel whose values of K and n are
1275 MPa and 0.45 respectively. (10 marks)

Instructions:
i. Submit directly to me on November 23rd, 2022
ii. Attempt the two (2) questions
iii. Answer by writing legibly on A4 size paper(s) only (don’t type)
