Mark scheme
End of Unit assessments are 30 marks, so you should allow 35 minutes.
The following marks are awarded for each question.

B Unconditional accuracy mark

M Method mark awarded for correct method or partial method
A Accuracy mark (awarded after a correct method or process; if no method or process
is seen then full marks for the question are implied but see mark scheme for more
details)
ft Incorrect values may be followed through from one step to the next provided that
the correct method is seen in each step and the only errors are arithmetic. This is
shown in mark schemes by putting a number in inverted commas
oe Or equivalent method or answer
cao Correct answer only

2a M1 M1 for subtracting 13 from both sides,
1.5 e.g. −4y = −6 oe

A1 oe
2b M1 M1 for multiplying both sides by 4 or
32 dividing both sides by 3, eg 3w = 96 or

A1 cao
3 M1 M1 for equation 2x + x + 12 = 180 or
112 3x + 12 = 180
M1 M1 for subtracting 12 from both sides, eg
3x = 168
M1 M1 for x = 56
A1 cao
4a B1 Accept y + y + 2 + 2(y + 2) = 58 oe
4y + 6 = 58
4b M1 M1 for subtracting 6 from both sides, e.g.

5b M1 M1 for subtracting 524 from both sides.
9 weeks e.g. 974 = 524 + 50n = 974 − 524

A1 oe

6a M1 M1 for correct rearrangement with x terms

2 on one side and numbers on the other
side, e.g. 6x − 2x = 11 − 3 or for the
correct simplification of either x terms or
numbers on one side in a correct
equation, e.g. 6x − 2x = 8 or 6x = 2x + 8
M1 M1 for rearrangement with x terms on one
side and numbers on the other and
correct simplification of terms on both
sides or 4x − 8 = 0
A1 cao

6b M1 M1 for correct expansion of the brackets

−1 or dividing all terms by 2 as a first step. eg
2y + 18 or 6 − 2y = y + 9

M1 M1 for rearrangement with y terms on one

side, e.g. 12 = 2y + 18 + 4y or both
numbers on one side,
e.g. 12 − 18 − 4y = 2y
A1 cao

6c M1 M1 for correct expansion of the brackets

9.5 or dividing all terms by 4 as a first step.

eg 4t − 12 or
M1 M1 for rearrangement with t terms on one
side, e.g. 4t − 12 − 2t = 7 or both
numbers on one side, e.g. 4t = 2t + 7 +
12

7a B1 oe
5x + 2 = 3x + 8
7b M1 M1 for rearrangement with x terms on one
46 side and numbers on the other,
e.g. 5x − 3x = 8 − 2
