III. THE WORK ASSIGNED AT THE INTERNSHIP:

1. Classroom observation:
I’m highly thankful to the supervisor at the Mrs. Ha, that allowed me to observe
the TAB1209 and TAB1210 classes for non-English majored students with four
different skills including Listening, Speaking, and Reading in the individual lesson. I
got the chance to be acquainted with new adorable students and being exposed to
English teaching environment.
During that first period in which I had the chance to observe the my supervisor
teacher’ techniques, I paid special attention to the way she motivated her students. She
offered positive grades or rewards for those volunteered to go to the blackboard or to
read aloud the answer, it seemed that I gained more experience for my teaching
practice. Moreover, my team members also gave me new ideas and showed variety of
methods in teaching English with excitement and efficiency.
Despite the short time of observation, I have accumulated a lot of experience
and some necessary skills to polish up my ability and those are “gemstones” for me in
the pursuit of English teaching career.
The table below shows my classroom observation schedule:

2. Teaching practice
th
During the five-week period from December 10 , 2020 to January 6th, 2021, I was in
charge of teaching two periods in TAB1210 class for students being in B1.2 level.
 The first class on Dec 23rd , I taught a grammar unit “Second
Conditional”
 The second class on Dec 30th, I taught the review lesson in unit 12
“ Nature”
After my teaching practice, I realized that English teaching requires the huge
knowledge, and good soft-skills to capture the interest and attention of students. All
the aspects from

3. Exam supervision:
During the internship, I was allowed to supervise and grade the two exams held
th
on December 30 , 2020 and January 06th , 2021. From the experiences as a supervisor,
I learn about the correct and effective scoring method. Futhermore, I acquire
knowledge of the order of the exam organized steps and how to effectively manage the
class.
The table below gives information about my exam supervision in details:
NO DATE ROOM
1 30/12/2020 G3.101

4. English club:
The participation in organized activities English club contributes to the
dynamism and freshness during my internship process. I participated to share ideas
and find out the necessary information (‘wish’ structure) in the meeting on December
th
16 , 2020. Besides, I was charge of host in the final stage designing Christmas cards
in the English club activity. That gives me a chance to interact with new friends who
love English and join in the meaningful activity of designing Christmas cards for an
important friend.

IV. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF INTERNSHIP:

1. Advantages:
The first thing I mention is that the internship is placed at Nha Trang University
where I study and gives me many benefits. As I have spent almost 4 years studying
here at the same faculty and lecturing building, there weren’t any problems in finding
location, getting to know the features of the place.
My supervisor is a professional teacher with plenty of experience and full of
energy and enthusiasm. Despite her occupied schedule, she has always been extremely
helpful and dedicated, even when a member sent the message at almost midnight, she
replied right away. It’s such a huge admiration from me to Mrs. Ha for how she
managed good classroom organization and planning, maintaining positive rapport
with students, possesses knowledge of subject matter, establish daily routine, and are
compassion towards student.
Moreover the faculty did plan excellently the timing for the internship so it
would fit the academic and even personal interests. The internship period took place
after we’ve finished all the exams, so certainly I could spend time and energy to focus
on it. The faculty were very thoughtful and considerate to schedule the internship end
before Tet holidays therefore . In my opinion, it’s a perfect and well-planned for all
teachers, interns and students.

8
2. Disadvantages:
During the whole internship, I received a lot of sincere help from my
supervisor, friends, NTU students and many others. Nevertheless, difficulties are
unavoidable that cause depression.
The first challenge that I had to deal with is time management and still meet the
requirements of the lesson. Hence, it made me really stressful and tired. Sometimes, I
still got worried about finishing tasks, lesson plans in my dreams, and then I failed to
sleep those nights. Then, I decided to confide to my teacher and she told me that I
should keep calm, prepare the lesson with her instructions and feedbacks. Since then,
everything seemed to go in a better directions and my level of stress reduced
significantly.
Secondly, I have to admit that planning was not an easy task for me. It took me
a lot of time to organize the whole lesson according to the time allotted, to choose the
activities that would be included and the material that would be used, etc. I had to find
a way to introduce the topic, but I had to create context first. To be sincere, that was
something I was not used to do when I worked at school, so it was a bad habit hard to
break.
Another obstacle for me is the variety in student’s English levels. It is really
challenging to engage the students with different background in English fluency, the
activities that are interesting to advanced students, however they appear tricky and
unappealing to students with lower levels.
In conclusion, there were three main difficulties that I encountered during my
internship including the matter of time, not receiving the cooperation from some of
students and being in shortage of teaching experience to effectively deal with urgent
situations. However these challenges led me to grow personally and professionally.

V. EVALUATE YOURSELF IN TERMS OF:

1. Skills:
a. Process of preparing the lesson plan:
As unexperienced teacher in the professional environment, Moreover, I could not
think of creative ideas to start with my class. It seemed like my mind was blank,
empty of inspiration. The first lesson plan that I handed in to my teacher was almost
completely modified, so I got a bit discouraged at that moment. But I paid special
attention to my teacher’s suggestions and everything was easier for me since then
b. While teaching:
No matter of how the lesson were carefully prepared, the first lesson that I taught
didn’t go as expectation. My ways of delivering lesson couldn’t catch interests of
students. Each time I asked for answers from the students and seeing no raising hands,
those moments just made me feel anxious and insecure, but I knew I had to continue
somehow.
While, the next lesson was a progress in which I had learn from previous mistakes
and feedbacks from Mrs. Ha. I felt more confident and comfortable to evaluate the
class, in the other hand, the Powerpoint presentation was also improved in terms of
content and appearance.

2. Attitude:
I am very aware that I have made mistakes which did disappoint my supervisor
teacher but I believe those are the lesson to be avoided in the future. At the first
meeting with teacher and the observation class, I was absent and this is one of my
biggest regret. My sincere gratitude to Mrs. Ha that she was generous enough to give
me a second chance. She was patiently explaining my errors and how this
unprofessional attitude will harm me later both in academic and social environment. I
believe this one of the most precious qualities of a teacher, it is being sympathetic
with your students. Later on, I tried to make up for my mistakes, I showed my efforts
in attendance, keeping contact with my supervisor and cooperation with my team
members. I’m very lucky to receive such kindness from my supervisor.

10
3. Knowledge:
Before taking the internship, I have taken some subjects regarding English
pedagogy, such as: Use Technology in Teaching, Reading & Writing Teaching
Methods, Speaking & Listening Teaching Methods, Grammar Teaching Method, and
Use English in English Teaching. Those have equipped me with basic knowledge but
certainly they are not all sufficient. Therefore this internship program got me exposed
to the requirement, activities and operations in teaching English at academic
institution.
4. Language:
Since I have been teaching with real classes with real students I no longer feel
awkward even though I am a non-native speaker. Now that I have had a chance to
prove myself as a teacher in front of these students and shown them that I know many
different techniques as well as my skills using English , they have begun to accept me
as their teacher and I am beginning to feel more like a teacher of English.

VI. ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING IN INTERNSHIP UNIT:

1. Programs:
To students are at A1 and B1 according to the university placement test results,
they apply the coursebook series Life. That series is a practical, competency-based
syllabus that helps learners in their development of grammar, vocabulary, functions,
pronunciation, and skills through appropriate communicative tasks.
The “Life” textbook (3 book series), which is specifically designed for
Vietnamese undergraduate students of a CEFR (Common European Framework of
Reference for Languages) A2 to B1 level.
For the class TAB1209, TAB1210 for non-English majored students of B1.2 level
English, they use the Life pre-intermediate textbook written by John Hughes. It
includes linguistic materials (vocabulary, grammar, and phonetics) and language skills
(listening, speaking, reading, and writing), and communication situations from lessons
5 to 8 of

11
the textbook. Also, It consisted of the 12-unit thematically organized including a wide
variety of themes to:
• Unit 1: Health
• Unit 2: Competitions
• Unit 3: Transportation
• Unit 4: Adventures
• Unit 5: The environment
• Unit 6: Stages in life
• Unit 7: Work
• Unit 8: Technology
• Unit 9: Language and Learning
• Unit 10: Travel and vacation
• Unit 11: History
• Unit 12: Nature
Overall, with the special designation for students, the “Life” textbooks are an
essential tool to develop the lexical competence of L2 learners.
2. Methods:
Overall, teachers know what the appropriate methods and strategies to apply in a
classroom to help students including Grammar translation method (GTM),
Communicative language teaching ( CLT ).
Although the teaching was focused on grammar, teachers also integrated the speaking
aspects. Randomly, students were asked to repeat what the tutors said and corrected
students’ pronunciation to develop their self-confidence in speaking. In addition,
students learned the structures used in spoken.

In order to encourage students practice oral English, teachers have applied CLT
methods by giving topic to students to discuss and facilitate them to communicate in
the classroom.

Basically, teachers have tried to use various methods but not all of them worked well
because students faced some difficulties. Therefore, sometimes the teachers taught
students by using GTM, CLT combined it with other teaching techniques.

12
3. Tests:
During the time of learning, lectures inform the test that students have already
known and prepared carefully.. Occasionally, the mini-test is given suddenly to
indicate the students’ comprehension and understanding of the lesson.
The most important test is the final test calculated your final grade and
comprised at 50% of the total, which decides that students can pass the course or not.
It is followed by four forms: listening, speaking, reading, and listening.

VII. GENERAL COMMENTS ON THE UNIT:

1. Organizational structure:
The truth is that the unit extremely efficiently and smoothly operation makes an
advantage condition to implement the task that I had been assigned. For details, the
supervisor will give the necessary information (the list of students, level of English,
and teaching materials), assign mandatory tasks (observation classroom, teaching
practice) to all trainees at a meeting.
2. Staff:
The Faculty of Foreign Languages at Nha Trang University including
experienced and professional teachers.
In my opinion, they all are enthusiastic and passionate about their career that
motivates me to pursue my dream job working as an English teacher. Teacher are
available and find time to answer students’ inquiries though they have busy schedule
3. Facilities:

The environment of the classrooms was very good and suitable for learning.
The classrooms provided students ample spaces with well-furnished sitting
arrangements and efficient lighting facilities. Besides, there are not enough tables and
chairs for students, which makes students feel uncomfortable.
VIII. GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT LEARNERS, TEACHERS:

1. Learners:
My appreciation is also extended to the students of , TAB1210 class because of
their wonderful cooperation during my internship and even the class TAB109 though I
just had chances to observate.. To be honest, it is really under lots of pressured while
teaching in a class with over 60 students so that teachers meet difficulty in observing
the whole class and stimulating interaction with students
Through the number of observation classroom, the classes consists students
with mix abilities. In the class, not all the students were capable to cope up with each
other. All the students were not equal regarding understanding something. Few
students lacked in understanding ability. Acquisition power of all the students were
not equal. Thus I had to adapt various teaching methods so that all my students are
benefited from my teaching
In brief, they encouraged me in being confident to accomplish my practice
completely and finish the internship in success.
2. Teachers:
My dearest thank to my supervisor Mrs. Le Cao Hoang Ha who gives me
valuable experiences to contribute to the lesson plan as well as teaching practice. She
taught me how to become a professional teacher. It was a great experience to see how
Mrs. Ha teaching, She was standing in front of so many students with confidence and
still enthusiastic towards students. I now understand being a teacher is not only about
teaching but being empathetic, caring and understanding the students.
The most impressive point is that she immediately gives me useful advice and
constructive criticism to improve my lesson plan when she receives my emails. Since
working with her, I have learned a way of working decisively and quickly to solve all
problems in the best possible way.

15
I also give my sincere thanks to Ms.Vo Nhu, who is the instructor for the
English club. She gave interesting ideas about activities and engaged the members to
actively participate in organizing activities on Christmas day. Thanks to that
memorable activity, I have a new experience in the English club and know more
about organizing activities.

IX. RECOMMENDATIONS:

Honestly, thanks to the enthusiastic help of teachers as well as the Faculty of

Foreign Languages, and my group members, I had favorable conditions in
order to finish our internship successfully. Nevertheless, as an English-
majored student at NTU, I would like to give some suggestions that I believe
would enhance the quality of teaching in the unit.
I would like to follow some other teaching methods, especially CLT
( communicative Language teaching) to make the teaching more effective and
exciting . The seating arrangement is also monotonous in the school. I would
prefer to change the seating arrangement sometimes and make the classroom
more attractive so that the students get more enthusiastic in learning.
There is no other scope of learning rather than the text book that are provided
(Life- pre intermediate) so it would be great to provide extra knowledge and let
them watch about different videos in various topics. Perhaps there should be
more extra curriculum activities to help students practice speaking in English
rather just sitting in the class and doing exercises in the textbooks.

X. CONCLUSION:
Being an intern teacher was a golden opportunity to understand the value of a
teacher’s role in the life of students. Teachers can play various roles in various ways in
students’ life. My internship was for about 1 month and this period of time gave me a
notable experience of my life. The school where I worked had a good environment
and it helped me utilize this opportunity and gain knowledge about teaching. I also
learnt to be professional, how to deal with professional tasks and maintain relationship
with colleagues

I felt happy when I did things right, but what were really valuable to me were the
mistakes I made. I took advantage of them, and tried hard not to repeat them, but
correct them. I know it is not the end of my practices. It is just the beginning. There is
a lot that I still have to learn and to go through.
