Society of petroleum engineers- Curtin division (SPE):
I am in the events sub-committee primarily involved in organizing event place, Help event
coordinator in preparing the layout and style of the event(site visits, networking nights,
information sessions), Ensuring student are aware of the events by finding new ways to
connect to them(through popularizing the Facebook page of SPE-Curtin, announcements in
lecture theatres, distributing pamphlets etc.)
Length: July 2013 - present.
One of the major reasons for me joining this academic club is to bridge the gap between the
industry and university. Getting involved in the oil and gas industry, meeting professionals
from the industry and gaining knowledge of current trends and technologies in oil and gas
fascinates me. Besides that the importance of networking cannot be ignored. Thus this club
gives me (and my peers) a chance to interact with the industry directly.

Outline and describe your leadership experience (including length of leadership roles)
and what you learned from your experience.
Student Transition And Retention Team - START, Future students bld102, Curtin
I am a current engineering student mentor for START(group A5) at Curtin. My role can be
summarized as being an informal guide to junior students. I regularly contact them through
email/ mobile/ face-to-face sessions about any quires/ issues they may have during their first
year at Curtin. I provide them information about different sources of help available on
campus, give sound advice based on my experience as a first year student, guide to career
development and essentially pass to them what I believe is beneficial to me as a student.
Length: August 2012 - present.
This experience of being a mentor and helping fellow Curtin students has been self-
rewarding. Although it is quite challenging to set aside few hours from my job and study for
it, but none the less I have learned to manage my time. I think it is very satisfying for me
when I am able to help these students as I've been in their situation before and I know from
my experience what sort of advice will do them good. Also engaging with them during the
orientation and between mentor - mentee workshops helped me develop my oratory skills
significantly.

Describe your community service passions and involvement (WHAT do you do and
WHY?).
I have been involved in Australian indigenous mentoring experience - AIME at Curtin
recently. This is a one-on-one mentoring session with a under - privileged indigenous student
helping them realize their potential and encouraging them to attend university and continue
their education. I was thoroughly moved by Lauren (my manager's) commitment to this
organization, its success (about 8,000 indigenous students have been mentored by 2012) and
how terribly wrong the notion of indigenous students being not capable to year 12 Australian
student is. I, by being a guide to my mentee, help him gain essential soft skills and inspire
them to develop themselves for Australian workplace. With a little bit of help and right
direction, life of these kids could change for ever. This is by far my most gratifying
participation in any organization.
Describe a project that you have been involved in, including the three main leadership
skills that you used.
I was involved as a site leader for one of the John Curtin Weekend (JCW) projects organized
by Curtin Volunteers this year. Our site was Merriden. As a group we had to participate in the
Activate Merredin project. We were in charge of creating a business plan, constructing a
small garden for the community, painting chairs and creating a small piece of sculpture for
the locals. My responsibilities included leading and guiding all volunteers for designated
tasks, ensuring the safety of all volunteers and abiding to Curtin's policy of representation to
third party. I believe the main leadership skills I used were:
Team work - Basically I followed through the democratic style of leadership. Together with
being helpful to the community, I wanted them to enjoy and have fun by giving them
freedom of choice. Although I made sure that work was being done, and that we were on time
for our next task. I believe by being humorous and a friendly leader, I had won the
confidence of my volunteers in me, which helped me carry out our tasks effectively.
Communication - Frequent contact with all those involved in the project was quite important.
From my coordinator to the manager to all the volunteers, it was necessary that all were on
the same track as far as the information provided was concerned. Issues such as dietary
requirement, payment confirmation, emergency contact etc. could not have been left till the
last minute. My manager was impressed with my performance and I am happy that the
project was a success.
Time management - With increasing work load of my second year units, job and family
commitments, it was necessary for me to ensure that I plan and prioritize my tasks. I made a
time table and worked on it regularly to make sure that I devote my time appropriately to all
the tasks that were required to be done within a specific period.

Describe your participation or involvement in leadership programs.


For example Curtin Leadership Centre, RYLA, Leeuwin, Sir Charles Court Young Leaders
Program, Duke of Edinburgh.
I have been involved with the Curtin leadership centre’s (CLC) programs for almost a year
now. I have completed the Tier 1(Self leadership) modules successfully and now I am into
Tier 2(Team leadership). Completing these modules and listening to the outstanding speakers
invited every time for the workshops has certainly been beneficial to me. I aspire to be a good
leader in my field of expertise, and CLC has helped me throughout and continues to develop
me personally to achieve my goal. Apart from learning a lot of useful things, I have also
enjoyed being a part of such an organization and made some wonderful friends.

What do you understand to be the core purpose of JCLA and why do you wish to be a
JCLA Graduate?

I believe that JCLA strives to strengthen the image of Curtin of caring for and working
towards a better community. JCLA provides Curtin students with leadership skills training
and an outstanding professional development through community involvement.
Being a part of this great organization has always been my wish since I started studying at
Curtin in 2012. I understand that JCLA’s program will help me advance the Curtin graduate
attributes significantly. Also the qualities and the skilled learned will help me evolve as a
better person with high employ-ability.
How will you leverage the JCLA experience to assist you achieve your goals?

I am sure that the JCLA experience will be a memorable one for me. One of my goals is to
become a future leader in my field of expertise for an MNC. My participation in guiding and
being with people who work for a good cause will be eventful. The practice of essential skills
of time and project management while gaining a deeper understanding of values and ethics
will be invaluable for the future. I endeavour to become a socially responsible professional,
and I think that JCLA will be an integral part of my journey.
