ASSESSING CARRIER BASE

ASSESSING FEEDING AMERICA’S CARRIER BASE

Feeding America is an NGO that works to feed America’s hungry through a nationwide
network of member food banks and engage the country in the fight to end hunger. They
secure donations, move food, store and distribute them to feed the people in need.
Feeding America, in collaboration with their network and partners, is working on
ensuring access to enough nutritious food for people struggling with hunger and making
meaningful progress toward ending hunger by 2025. The focus of this report is to
interpretate and communicated meaningful patterns in the data given. By choosing
opportunity 3 (Assessing Feeding America’s carrier base), we are helping Feeding
America make the right decisions related to its carriers’ network.

4
FEEDING AMERICA’S CARRIER BASE:

Feeding America never knows where a donation can come from or where it is going
to ship. This means that it cannot work with dedicated workers since the location
that a donation can come from or where it will be delivered is not previously known.
It has a transportation department that works to source transportation. Feeding
America’s carrier base mostly consists of 3PL brokers because of the nature of how
transportation works. It has a set list of transportation providers (carriers) that they
have under contract; others are not arranged by them (Vendor arranged). Feeding
America would like to know the regions in which they should consider expanding
their carrier network (national or regional carriers) in order to be more efficient and
save transportation costs.

CR10059 that represent the top 5 carriers by weight for
the top 100 lanes.

• Few states are sorted on the regional level because these
states are the ones where the top 100 lanes are. All of the
states in black are not colored because no deliveries are
done by using the top 100 lanes.

• The total gross weight size is available in the donors

states for the top 100 lanes. We assume here that the
total gross weight is still at the donors State.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FEEDING AMERICA

• Washington does not have a near warehouse, Freight cost is high

and yet total gross weight is also high. Thus, Feeding America
needs to expand to Washington since it is paying so much money as
freight cost and arranging more deliveries to there.

• Warehouse in Washington and California is high; therefore, they

need more national carriers not regional ones.
