II. SUMMARY:

The story is an ancient form of oral story-telling to teach long-lasting social and ethical values. The
main character is Maui, a little hero for he has a super kite , contending with super-powers, the Four
Great Winds. The conflict is between the human being and the natural elements: Maui tries to control
the Four Great Winds. Supernatural character: The Keeper-of-the-Winds Supernatural events: The Soft
Wind and the Great Winds help to fly the kite. Connection between the natural and supernatural world
Maui asks the Keeper-of-the-Winds to bring out the Soft Wind and the Great Winds to fly his kite. He
was initially wise enough to heed the Keeper’s advice about respecting the winds but then he becomes
overconfident and takes power into his own hands. He underestimates the power of the Four Winds that
he unleashes. Through his stupidity, he brings havoc to his village and they shun him. He rises because
he learns humility, and loneliness helps him to learn to forecast the weather and he regains the respect
of the village. He becomes a reliable person and the villagers respect his wisdom. The Point of View is
a teaching point: Respect Nature and Nature will respect you.

The Keeper became friendly because Maui had grown less arrogant and was using his
knowledge of the weather to help others.

Maui was treated with a lot of admiration. His friends gathered around him to help him carry the
kite. All the people came to watch when Maui and the others paraded through the village.
2.What did Maui do after he had flown the kite the first time?
Maui obeyed the woman when she said that the winds need to be respected. He asked the woman to
call her winds back and let his kite drop to the ground.

3.Compare the winds mentioned in the lesson Maui’s Kite.


The Soft Wind of Hilo was gentle and drifted slowly out of Ipu Iki and tugged at the kite and allowed
it to sail high in the skies. The Four Great Winds were harsh and came out of Ipu Nui with a mighty
roar. They snatched the kite from the hands of Maui’s friends, swept it away over the sea and
disappeared into the darkening clouds where it was lost forever

4.What do we learn from the lesson Maui’s kite?


This story teaches us to respect nature. Human beings can never match up to the power of nature.
They can only hope to try and learn its ways through careful observation. The story also shows us that
nature can be kind to us if we respect it; but it can also turn violent and cruel when we disobey its laws.
