Hi parents! This packet is your guide to navigating the transition to
elementary school. It includes useful tips about how to establish
routine and access free educational resources in your home. These tools
will help prepare your child for the expectations of kindergarten. It also
provides instructions on how to enroll your child in Lawrence Public
Schools. Finally, it includes supplies and important LPS policies that you
should be aware of. We hope this information will help you and your
child feel prepared for this next step. Although we will be sad to see
them go, we cannot wait to see what your children accomplish!

Why does diet matter?
It is important for children to develop a
healthy relationship with food. Creating a
balanced diet provides the nutrients that
children need for their growing bodies and
developing brains. In return, your child will
do better in school, have fewer behavioral
problems, and get sick less often.

2. Prepare Required Documentation

a. This includes: Student’s original birth certificate, Proof of residency in the

guardian's name, Immunizations up-to-date, Physical Exam (within one year), TB

Test/ Low Risk Results, Vision screening for PK/K, Lead test results

i. If a child receives services, must include I.E.P or I.A.P

TIPS FOR TRANSITIONING
Create consistency. When you say
goodbye (either at the bus or at school),
reassure your child that you will see him/
her later, mentioning a specific time or a
concrete activity.
Celebrate their successes! Set aside a
time, each evening, to listen to your child
share their day.
Read everything the school sends home.
It may be important forms or just a
chance to see your child’s hard work.
Show up as much as you can! Attend
events, meetings, pick up and drop off,
playdates, or anything else that will help
you feel involved.
Stay positive, even when it’s hard –
you’ve got this, and your kids do, too
