This article provides guidance on how to integrate technology into lesson plans. It gives perspective on

Vocabulary for ELLs

This Reading Rockets article lays out the ins-and-outs of teaching vocabulary for various levels of ELLs. It
is a comprehensive list of methods and jump-ff points for structuring a lesson. Though it is not an in
depth look at the subject, per se, it does give thorough insight on how to get started in building
vocabulary lessons.

This is a robust site for Spanish speaking ELLs that is also complete with an English version of the entire
site. Within the site are reading, viewing and listening resources that can be used at home or in the
classroom. It is just as enriching for learners and families as it is for educators.

Google Tools

Accessibility can create an unfortunate roadblock for educators, learners and families in the process of
learning English. Google is a free, accessible and user-friendly resource that provides language learning
support for the classroom, at home and even on the go. Found here is a comprehensive list of Google
tools that can be used to empower ELL students and their families.

Reading A-Z

Featured here are a multitude of free printable resources for English learning literacy classroom
activities (LAZEL, Inc, 2022). There are books, flashcards, and “seatwork” activities to name a few. There
is material offered for Pre-K through grade 12 material, though much of it could be used for adult
learners with a sense of humor as well.

WIDA

Even without full access through membership, WIDA offers some free resources in its library as well as a
highly knowledgeable blog that touches on latest news is TESOL as well as professional insight to
effective approaches from ELL educators. It takes some time to navigate the elements of the site that do
not require membership, but the content is really worth the try.

SIOP – Sheltered Instruction Observtion Protocol

SIOP is a codified pedagogical technique that offers ELL educators evidence-based curricular framework
for their classrooms (SAVVAS, 2022). Having this kind of mechanism creates necessary structure in the
development of a curricular and lesson planning.

In setting up our ELL students for success, we must invite them to participate in their communities. A
important component of survival English is cultural context to the language that awaits them. Larry
Ferlazzo’s list has great opportunities for students and educators to familiarize themselves with common
English modern vernacular.

FluentU Blog

FluentU is a blog for various language learners, this is the blog specifically for teachers and learners of
English. There are a multitude of posts on topics ranging from vocabulary lists, classroom tips and
activity suggestions. It also includes linguistic factoids and articles about integrating into a new
community as an L2 speaker.
