Why SDG 14 is achievable by 2030.

It is achievable by 2030 with the help of the University of the Philippine’s

current development of ‘Initiatives in Implementing SDG 14.’

• The Information drive and training on sediment quality monitoring in fish farms
in provinces such as Guimaras and Capiz are one of the key actions to
overcome the decline in Philippine fishery production.
• UP MSI also has initiated to provide their aid in terms of reducing marine
pollution by conducting a study about plastic pollution and the role of microbial
organisms in the sinking, degradation, and remineralization of different
plastics.
• To protect and restore marine and coastal ecosystems they also have
instituted he Professional Masters in Tropical Marine Ecosystems focusing on
Marine Protected Areas as its area of specialization.
• They have also engaged to sustainable fishing as they try to identify areas
that need protection, promote strategies in protecting sardine fisheries in the
country, and establish harvest control.
• With UP collaborating with its different branches in the country as well as
some partner NGOs, conserving coastal and marine areas are possible. As
they undertake massive biodiversity studies, including exploratory and
discovery work.

Implementation Progress
• Portion of Philippine Rise was proclaimed as a Marine Resource Reserve in
2018.
• Philippine’s Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion and Philippine (Benham) Rise
were identified as Ecologically and Biologically Significant Marine Areas
(CBD).
• Biodiversity to be monitored and baseline information on pH, carbonate and
other water parameters will be determined.
• Around 1.4% (covering 4.68 million hectares) of the country’s territorial waters
is protected at present.
• Advocate and support biodiversity-friendly enterprises for coastal communities
within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
