1.1 Introduction

The traditional methods of conducting laboratory activities (assigned as Level 0) will not be
able to provide the avenue for students to enhance independent learning activities and
inculcate creativity and innovation. The traditional method is fully prescriptive where the
three elements namely problem, ways & means and answers are provided/fully given to the
students. However, it is still necessary to be implemented as part of the whole laboratory
course activity especially to first- and second-year students. In this laboratory activity
students will be introduced to the concept, principles and the mechanism of portable
fire-fighting equipment like portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel.

1.2 Objective
The objective of the laboratory is:
To introduce students to the concept, principles and the mechanism of portable
fire extinguisher and fire hose reel

1.3 Learning Outcomes

At the end of the laboratory activity, students would be able to:

1. Identify the correct equipment for portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel.
2. Analyse the operation system of portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel in a
building and present it in typical format of a laboratory report.
3. Work in a group to produce a technical report.

1.4 Theoretical Background

Fire fighting systems and equipment vary depending on the age, size, use and type of
building purposes. A building may contain some or all of the following features; fire
extinguishers, fire hose reels, fire hydrant systems and automatic sprinkler systems.

Portable Fire Extinguishers are provided for a 'first attack' fire fighting measure generally
undertaken by the occupants of the building before the fire service arrives. It is important
that occupants are familiar with which extinguisher type to use on which fire. Most fires
start as a small fire and may be extinguished if the correct type and amount of
extinguishing agent is applied whilst the fire is small and controllable. The extinguishing
agents used for fire extinguishers that currently available include water, foam, carbon
dioxide, dry chemical, wet chemical and special purpose. Fire extinguisher locations must
be clearly identified. Extinguishers are colour coded according to the extinguishing agent.

Fire extinguishers should be installed in plain view, above the reach of children, near an
escape route and away from stoves and heating appliances. Fire extinguishers require
some routine care. Make sure you read your operator's manual to learn how to inspect
your fire extinguisher.

A fire hose reel system in Malaysia is an equipment mounted close to a fire service to
provide uninterrupted water supply in the event of a fire outbreak.

The presence and ease of accessibility to fire hose reels helps people minimize damage
caused by accidental fires and explosions in premises.

Firefighters and volunteers can efficiently initiate a quick response to a fire outbreak if a
fire hose fitted in a building is full of pressurized water
or a suitable fire-extinguishing agent.

2 Problem Statement
The importance of safety awareness must be taking into consideration to increase the level
of building safety. As a student, it is important to know the fire- fighting equipment
such as portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel as well as any fire -fighting equipment
available in the building and ensure all fire -fighting equipment meet their standard
requirements of Fire Department.

In this laboratory, students will be required to study portable fire extinguisher and fire hose
reel in a building.

3.1 Apparatus

Portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel

3.2 Procedures
1. Identify suitable building with portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel
for the case study.
2. Study types of portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel.
3. Shows all portable fire extinguishers and fire hose reels available in the
chosen building.
4. Discuss the portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel by using picture,
diagram, or drawing.
5. Based on the data collected, refer to UBBL 1984 for any comparison
and recommendation.
3.3 Data Acquisition

All data collected during the test must be presented in proper format for easy
verification. Some of data that should be provided are:

i. Plan of location for portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel.
ii. Diagram or drawing of portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel.
iii. Sample pictures of portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel.
iv. Discuss the suitability of portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel for the
chosen building according to UBBL 1984.
