Egyptian Civilization

Life in Ancient Egypt

Egypt was a very fertile land, and under normal circumstances no one went hungry. Food could be
homegrown, earned in the form of rations (there was no money), hunted, fished or bartered at market.
Water could be obtained from wells, the Nile, or irrigation canals built by the Egyptians.

How old is the Egyptian Civilization

For almost 30 centuries—from its unification around 3100 B.C. to its conquest by Alexander the Great in
332 B.C.—ancient Egypt was the preeminent civilization in the Mediterranean world.

Technologies

The Egyptians invented and used many simple machines, such as the ramp and the lever, to aid
construction processes. They used rope trusses to stiffen the beam of ships. Egyptian paper, made from
papyrus, and pottery were mass-produced and exported throughout the Mediterranean Basin.
