0 Executive Summary
“Trash-to-Treasure” - #T2T simplifies the local recovery and utility of recyclable wastes by means
of automated incentives recycling kit. Every-week drinks & water bottling companies churn-out
millions of containers-with-content into cities, towns and villages which-after been emptied of
contents, these containers are trashed into land-fills, incinerators or in other instances, they
become nuisance in public-drains whereas they are recyclables. Project “Trash-to-Treasure”
(code named “#T2T”) is a recyclable-wastes recovery, redemption and restoration recycling
programme. We believe that “all refuse are wastes but not all wastes are refuse” and that “daily
wastes are not stuff to get rid of, but that they are resources if restored”. With a particular focus
on post-consumers waste plastic bottles (PETs) and used beverage Aluminium cans (UBCs),
Sachet-water containers, Retreasure aim to creating environmental, social and economic value
through the “Trash-to-Treasure” recycling programme.

This innovative-solution is the first automated-incentives driven recycling project in Nigeria and
Africa. We observed that the commitment of the public to recycling especially on waste-sorting
from source has not been sustained owing to the fact that the traditional recycling process
appeared not to provide them immediate benefits.

This easy-to-use solution (#T2T) is created to provide valuable benefits for subscribers
(restaurants, residents, retail stores, shopping-malls, hospitals, schools and other businesses)
who generate wastes by rewarding them with “Greencoins” as a motivation for sorting-
recyclables from source in order to encourage sustained loyalty towards recycling. Greencoins
are redeemable monthly by subscribers in any of the following options:

1. Bank-Cash deposits

2. Telephone-Airtime Credit Recharges

3. Waste-Collection Bill Clearance

4. House-hold appliances from Thermocool

5. House-hold appliances from Binatone

#T2T is facilitated with the use of the Retreasure Smart-Kit.

Driven by a team of a Sustainable Development-Projects Manager, a Business Executive, a Legal
Practitioner who is also a social Entrepreneur, an Information Technology Expert and other
results oriented professionals, #T2T aims at becoming a house-hold solution in mega-cities like
Lagos and other regions in Nigeria and the other 54 countries of Africa.

The volume of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in Lagos was estimated at 1,230,000 tons
per year in 2010 and has continued to increase heavily since (Journal of Sustainable Development
Studies, Vol. 6, No. 1, 2014, pg 68). About 40% of the MSW are in the form of recyclable plastic
and metal wastes. The Lagos metal and plastic waste market alone is valued at $700 million in
2014. (Venture Africa web-report, www.ventureafrica.com).

#T2T will ensure these resources are efficiently recovered and put to right use by creating
environmental and economic value to the society. This easy-to-use solution keeps the
environment clean; provides incentives to subscribers; resource material to manufacturers and
employment for the public.
