Types of cohesive devices

Pronouns- Refer back to anything that have already been addressed.

Ex. She, he, it, we, they, you.

Synonyms- Words that have nearly identical meaning.

Ex. Accurate-correct, achieve- accomplish.

Transitional words – Serve as cues to our readers about the relationships between phrases and how to
join sentences together. Ex. And, but, or

COHESIVE-TRANSITIONAL-DEVICES

Adding – An act of instance or addition. Ex. And, also, as well as, too, in addition, along with.

Sequencing - The process of combining things in particular order. Ex. Firstly, next, finally, then, before,
meanwhile.

Emphasizing – Stresses a point or give extra weight to an issue. Ex. Above all, especially, indeed,
significantly, in particular.

Contrasting – Compares or appraises in respect of differences. Ex. However, whereas, instead of, on the
other hand, nevertheless.

Illustrating – To make clear by giving or by serving as an example. Ex. Such as, for instance, in case of, for
example.

Conclusion- An act or instance of concluding. Ex. To summarize, in conclusion, to sum up, to wrap up, on
the whole.

Cause and effect- A relationship between events or things, where one is the result of the other or
others. Ex. Because, therefore, consequently, hence, as a result, due to.

Qualifying – to limit or modify the meaning. Ex. However, although, unless, apart from, as long as.

CAUSE AND EFFECT - It describes a relationship between actions or events in which at least one action
or event is a direct result of the others.

An cause is a catalyst, a motive, or an action that brings about a reaction-or reactions.A cause instigates
an effect.

An effect is a condition, occurrence, or result generated by one or more causes. Effects are outcomes.

Synonym - is a word or expression which means the same as another word or expression. A synonym is
simply a word that means the same as the other word in question. These words may not always mean
the same as the original word, but they can be closely related to it. It comes from the Greek words “syn”
and “onym,” which mean “together” and “name, ” respectively.

Why should we learn synonyms? It is important to use synonyms because they help to enhance the
writing quality and provide readers with a crisp and unique outlook of the text. Furthermore, it can also
improve both oral and writing skills, as explained ahead.
