time ago. Colin F. The F was for Fantine. The girl who started the fire.
GARBIELA. No, the student here. Right now!
STAUNCHER. You need to leave.
GARBIELA. But you know who I’m talking about.
STAUNCHER. You lost me at “single stupidest.”
GARBIELA. The girl who started the fire died.
STAUNCHER. Yes. She did.
GARBIELA. (To the audience:) And suddenly my head felt light.
Fantine! I bolted out of the theatre and ran through the halls. “Have
you seen Fantine?” “When was the last time you saw Fantine?”
“You must know who I’m talking about. Fantine!” (To the audience:) I
realize that most of you are ahead of me here, that you know what’s

up with Fantine. But I didn’t. I’d seen ghost stories but I’d never
experienced one. Trust me; it’s quite different. (To passing students:)
HAS ANYONE SEEN FANTINE? (To the audience:) Nobody had
even heard of her. And now I had two questions. Question one: Was
Fantine what I was afraid she was? I found her in the library.
(FANTINE is focused on a doll she’s holding.)
FANTINE. Hi friend-a-ricious! I’m calming myself down by making
a voodoo doll of my sister. I made hair out of tinsel so I can shave it off.
GARBIELA. Fantine, how long have you been going to this school?
FANTINE. Forever it seems like.
GARBIELA. A year? Ten years?
FANTINE. I don’t keep track. But everything got better when you
got here.
(RUTH hurries past, hesitates just long enough to say:)
RUTH. You’re talking to yourself again.
(He hustles off.)
FANTINE. Another member of the Fantine’s Not Here Club.
