The tourism sector of Dumangas town is inching up, according to Mayor Rolando Distura.
“Dumangas is a potential marine and coastal ecotourism destination. I believe that we have a lot to offer because we
are endowed with natural resources,” Distura said.
“We want to give tourists a fulfilling nature experience,” he added.
Distura said they are planning to develop several nature spots in their town. These include Siete Picados, Lapus-
Lapus, Matagsing Hill and Gi-Gi.

El Faro Islote Siete Picados

Siete Picados means seven sins. It is composed of seven islets.
One of the islets holds one of the Spanish light houses in the country. El Faro Islote Siete Picados was built in 1897.
Another must-visit place in Dumangas is the islet of Lapus-Lapus, a fish sanctuary. It has abundant mangrove trees,
beautiful birds and bountiful fish, crabs, prawn and green shells, among others.
Lapus-Lapus is one of the protected areas being supervised by the local government unit (LGU) of Dumangas.
Considered as a nature’s heirloom, Matagsing Hill is an ideal place for those who want a nature adventure. There are
caves to explore in Matagsing. The highest part of the hill called Cantel gives tourists a near bird’s eye view of
Dumangas.

Dumangas adventure is not complete without visiting Gi-Gi, a mangrove sanctuary where tourists can relax and
unwind.

For food trips, tourists can visit the following restaurants in Dumangas that offer mostly seafood dishes: Princess
Ciara Restaurant, Siete Picados Restaurant and Piad’s Restaurant, among others.

Every year, Dumangas celebrates Haw-as Festival.

“It is an annual thanksgiving festival for the bountiful fish harvest from the waters in the area. The festival uses the
iconic bangus as its symbol because it is their number one product.”

“Haw-as also celebrates the contribution made to Dumangas by those persons involved in the local fishing industry.
The festivity offers every visitor the opportunity to learn more about the town’s culture and to better appreciate and
understand its value to the community.”

FACT SHEET FOR SCIENCE AND HEALTH WRITING

Directions: Compose an 8-10 feature story using the following facts on Science and Health.

 A 3rd of COVID survivors suffer neurological or mental disorders – study.

 One in three COVID-19 survivors in a study of more than 230,000 mostly Americanpatients were diagnosed
with a brain or psychiatric disorder within six months, suggesting the pandemic could lead to a wave of
mental and neurological problems, scientists said on Tuesday, April 6.
 Researchers who conducted the analysis said it was not clear how the virus was linkedto psychiatric
conditions such as anxiety and depression, but that these were the mostcommon diagnoses among the 14
disorders they looked at.
 Post-COVID cases of stroke, dementia, and other neurological disorders were rarer, theresearchers said, but
were still significant, especially in those who had severe COVID-19.
 "Our results indicate that brain diseases and psychiatric disorders are more commonafter COVID-19 than
after flu or other respiratory infections," said Max Taquet, apsychiatrist at Britain's Oxford University, who
co-led the work.
 The study was not able to determine the biological or psychological mechanismsinvolved, he said, but urgent
research is needed to identify these "with a view topreventing or treating them."
 Health experts are increasingly concerned by evidence of higher risks of brain andmental health disorders
among COVID-19 survivors. A previous study by the sameresearchers found last year that 20% of COVID-19
survivors were diagnosed with apsychiatric disorder within three months.
 The new findings, published in the Lancet psychiatry journal, analyzed health records of236,379 COVID-19
patients, mostly from the United States, and found 34% had beendiagnosed with neurological or psychiatric
illnesses within six months.
 The disorders were significantly more common in COVID-19 patients than incomparison groups of people
who recovered from flu or other respiratory infectionsover the same time period, the scientists said,
suggesting COVID-19 had a specificimpact.
 Anxiety, at 17%, and mood disorders, at 14%, were the most common, and did notappear to be related to
how mild or severe the patient's COVID-19 infection had been.
 Among those who had been admitted to intensive care with severe COVID-19 however,7% had a stroke
within six months, and almost 2% were diagnosed with dementia.
 "Although the individual risks for most disorders are small, the effect across the wholepopulation may be
substantial," said Paul Harrison, an Oxford psychiatry professor whoco-led the work.
