Intermediate Sanction

The most common intermediate sanction is probation. Probation is a court-imposed

sentence that allows offenders to serve their time under community supervision while living in

the community under specific terms and conditions (Schmalleger, 2019).

One major challenge facing the intermediate sanctions movement is the lack of

uniformity and consistency in implementation across jurisdictions. Research suggests that there

is significant variation in the use of intermediate sanctions among different probation

departments and some departments may be more likely to use incarceration as a default option

(Bales & Piquero, 2012).

Another significant problem facing the intermediate sanctions movement is limited

funding and resources. The intermediate sanctions programs are often underfunded and

understaffed, which can limit their effectiveness in reducing recidivism rates (Bales & Piquero).

While intermediate sanctions can be effective in reducing recidivism rates, there is

limited evidence to support the effectiveness of specific types of intermediate sanctions or to

identify the types of offenders who are most likely to benefit from them (Bales & Piquero, 2012).

One alternative sanction is community service, which involves offenders performing

unpaid work in the community. It is effective in reducing recidivism rates while offenders

contribute to their community (Schmalleger, 2019). Electronic monitoring, which involves

tracking offenders movements to ensure that they comply with the conditions of their sentence

(Schmalleger, 2019).
