Chapter 3 Summary

Claudia and her brother, Jamie, are walking to the museum. Jamie wants to take a taxi, but Claudia
wants to take the bus. Jamie is a gambler and a cheapskate, so Claudia decides to walk up Madison
Avenue instead. She and Jamie do not walk exactly side by side, and her violin case keeps bumping him.
As they walk, Claudia's pace slows down from what she is sure is an accumulation of shoe leather. She
realizes that Jamie will regret it when she collapses from exhaustion. ( 86 words)

Claudia and Jamie are on the corner of Madison Avenue and 80th Street, waiting for Jamie to turn left to
Fifth Avenue. Jamie is consulting a compass and announcing that when they turn left, they will be
heading "due northwest". Claudia is tired and cold at the tips, and her internal heat is cooking that will
explode out of her if she doesn't give it some vent. When they reach the museum, the guard clicks off
two numbers on his people counter, but they don't count them going out. Claudia agrees with her
brother that New York is a great place to hide out, and being called brilliant has cooled her down. ( 112

Phoeun Thangly

26,000 people visit the museum every week, from Mankato, Kansas to Paris, France, free of charge. On
Wednesdays, tourists wear orthopedic shoes and art students carry black sketchbooks. No one thought
it strange that a boy and a girl, each carrying a book bag, were in the museum. Claudia and Jamie, two
school children visiting a museum, were stopped at the entrance and told to check their cases and book
bags. Jamie objected, but Claudia explained that they would leave the museum by the front door and re-
enter from the back.

This would solve their problems, as they would be seen leaving the museum and free of their baggage
while they scouted around for a place to spend the night. Jamie was condemned to walking around in
his ski jacket.( 130 WORDS)

Nupnimol

Claudia and Jamie had been away from home for less than one day and were worried about survival
money. Jamie wanted to eat in the snack bar downstairs, which was cheaper than the main restaurant.
However, they were dismayed at the prices and had only $28.61 when they went into the cafeteria and
only $27.11 when they came out. Jamie asked Claudia if she could get one of the guards to play him a
game of war, but she refused. Jamie's pride was involved, as he had cheated Bruce through all second
grade and through all third grade so far and he still isn't wise. ( 105 WORDS)

Claudia and Jamie decide to hide in a men's room at the museum before it closes. Claudia explains that
they must enter a booth in the men's room and stand on the toilet. They must stay there until all the
people and guards have gone home, and the night watchman will walk around the roof trying to keep
people from breaking in. They find a place to spend the night in the rooms of fine French and English
furniture, and Claudia knows that this is the most elegant place to hide. (105 WORDS)

Dalin

Claudia and Jamie find a bed with a tall canopy, an ornately carved headboard, and two gigantic posts.
Jamie is reluctant to sleep in it, so Claudia reads the card to him, "State bed of Amy Robsart, first wife of
Lord Robert Dudley, later Earl of Dudley." Jamie and Claudia became a team, a family of two, and their
arguments became part of the adventure, not threats. Feeling like part of a team is something that
happens invisibly, and it is rare to happen to two people at the same time. (91 WORDS)

Jamie and Claudia follow their plan to meet their mother at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but are
stopped by a guard. They then enter the booths of the rest rooms and wait until five-thirty, when they
come out and meet. Jamie is hungry and uncomfortable, so he changes into his pajamas and gets back
into bed. Claudia is also uncomfortable, as the bed smells musty and she would have liked to wash
everything in a good detergent. ( 78 WORDS)

Claudia and her brother relaxed in the museum, listening to hushed and quiet words and listening to the
footsteps of the night watchman. They whispered good night to each other and fell asleep, hidden by
the draperies of the bed.( 40 WORDS)
