WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

AGILE
&

LEAN?

WHAT IS AGILE?

Agile is an iterative and incremental

software development methodology
with concurrent requirements,
development and testing.
Requirements and solutions are
developed in collaboration with the
customers / end users and cross-
functional teams, then developed
and ready for deployment at defined
intervals.

WHAT IS LEAN?

Lean is an ever-evolving philosophy

based on proven principles and
practices aimed at eliminating
waste (improving efficiency) to
make every step, task, & activity
create value for the customers.
Lean is a continuing process of
change involving everyone in the
organization. Lean principles
originated at Toyota.

Lean and Agile methodologies are
flexible, focus on continuous
improvement, and share common
goals and principles. However, the
workflow is more iterative in Agile.
The key difference between both
methodologies is that Lean
focuses on maximizing
efficiencies, whereas Agile is more
about maximizing effectiveness.

Another paramount difference is
flexibility. Lean is not that flexible
when it comes to dynamic
deliverable changes. However,
dynamic requirement changes are
effortless in Agile. Lean
methodology delivers Value; Agile
delivers Working Product (wherein
the small batch size is preferred
to deliver rapidly)

Few differences in various
toolkits:

Lean Management - Daily

Huddle meeting, VSM, RCPS,
5S, Visual Management.
Agile - Daily Stand up, Backlog,
Sprints.

Even though there is a considerable
difference between Lean and Agile,
both methodologies complement
each other in most working
situations. Some commonalities,
including Improving Quality,
Amplifying learning, and
Continuously improving and
empowering people, make both
approaches collaborative.

Choosing one over the other is
not pivotal, as exploring what
principles better suit the working
model in the organization and
incorporating them into the
software development process
matters.
