Malnutrition in Indonesia

Name : Aisya Noorfajaraina (111711563)

A. Summary
Malnutrition refers to deficiencies, excesses or imbalances in a person’s intake of energy
and/or nutrients. The term malnutrition covers 2 broad groups of conditions. One is
‘undernutrition’—which includes stunting (low height for age), wasting (low weight for
height), underweight (low weight for age) and micronutrient deficiencies or insufficiencies
(a lack of important vitamins and minerals). In Indonesia already been triple burden of
malnutrition. The causes include rapid economic development accompanied by increased
food availability, particularly high-fat, processed foods; and many cities and towns not
being pedestrian-friendly and discouraging physical activity, and even health care services
have been poorly equipped to deal with overweight and obesity, with services to screen,
diagnose, and treat overweight and obesity largely lacking.

It is called triple burden malnutrition in Indonesia because there are still children are
stunted and even overweight. Adolescents girls having anemia and even obese. On 2013,
Indonesia had already double burden, with an increasing prevalence of overweight and
obesity, and AOO (adolescent overweight and obesity). Household survey data from the
Indonesian National Health Survey (INHS) 2013 showed that 18.8% of children and
adolescents aged 5 to 12 years were overweight or obese, as were 10.8% of adolescents
aged 13 to 15 years, and 7.3% of adolescents aged 16 to 18 years. By 2018, these
prevalences had increased to 20% for children aged 5 to 12 years, 16% for adolescents aged
13 to 15 years, and 13.5% for adolescents aged 16 to 18 years.

B. Thoughts, Critique, and Affect on my personal Life

It is very important to spread education for the parents to giving a right food to gain
right nutrition for their childerns, opening health services in remote areas that are difficult
to access health services, spreading education about dangerous of anemia, overweight,
obese, and stunting for the childerns. It is affect on my personal life because eating is a daily
necessity but it’s also important if we can adjust the portion in eating every day to avoid
overweight and obesity and also have a healthy lifestyle.
