VOLCANIC
ERUPTION
BY GROUP 1: KRAKATOA
Guide Questions
1. Based on your data in the table above, how do you compare
the volcanic eruptions using various substances?
Using the table, we can compare the eruptions based on the
information gathered. Each volcano's eruption lasted for a varied
amount of time. The yeast and hydrogen peroxide mixture had the
longest duration, lasting five minutes. Additionally, we can see that
each eruption had a distinct height. Again, hydrogen peroxide
measuring the highest at 2 cm. And lastly, their distances. We were
unable to compare the differences in their travel distances because
our basin only had a 7cm capacity.
Guide Questions
2. What do you think are the factors that affect the magnitude
of your volcanic eruption?
The factors that affect the magnitude of our volcanic eruption
experiment is the pressure that develops when things that have
strong pressures when combined like baking soda and vinegar are
mixed. When baking soda and vinegar mixed together sodium
bicarbonate and acetic acid reacts to carbon dioxide which results in
its explosion.
Guide Questions
3. Describe the types of reactions that occurred in this simple
experiment.
We observed that the first eruption exploded immediately after we
poured the vinegar in the bottle. It flowed quickly on the sides. The
second eruption also has a sudden explosion but it is less flowy
compared to the first one. While the third explosion took some time
to explode after we poured the hydrogen peroxide, it has the
longest time of eruption considering that it flows slowly on the side.
Guide Questions
4. What does the following materials represent? a)dough,
b)bottle, c)vinegar, d)lemon juice, and e)hydrogen peroxide?
n the experiment, each material represented concepts related to volcanoes.
For the clay, it represented the layers if lava and ash which one of the parts of
a volcano. The bottle represents also some parts of the volcano which is the
conduit as the body of the bottle looks like a tunnel or a passage and the tip
of the bottle represents the vent since in the experiment, the tip of the bottle
is where the mixture escape. As for the vinegar, lemon juice, and the
hydrogen peroxide serves as the factors affects the viscosity of the magma.
As we can see, the hydrogen peroxide gives high viscosity magma while the
vinegar and lemon juice gives a low viscosity magma.
