Abstract
The movie Modern Times is a comedy of social criticism whose direction, production,
script and music are in charge of Charles Chaplin. And which is carried out in the 1930s,
when capitalism that affects the way of life of people develops. This film narrates the
difficulties of workers in an assembly line factory when it closes. Where the protagonist
goes through a series of unfortunate events that will lead him to the daughter of one of his
co-workers at the factory.
In the film Modern Times we can realize that a clear and direct criticism of the prevailing
production system during the thirties; since at this time the increasingly evident evolution
of machines brought with it the rise of the production system, which led machines to
occupy an important place in the way of life of people, leading to a dehumanized treatment
that minimized the value of their work and therefore their aspirations for a better salary,
turning the individual into a number. We can also say that it is a reflection on social
inequality, capitalist slavery, poverty wages, the concentration of wealth and how man was
treated like a machine for the benefit of a few. It is important to highlight that the author of
this film tries to express or show what was taking place at that time, which was the
capitalist system: a system that excludes, expels, rejects what is not profitable for it, which
creates vast marginality. from which, however, capital itself feeds and benefits.
On the other hand, we can also say that the deficient conditions to which workers are
subjected are also a reflection of the present, an economic depression added to a low job
offer, which affects low wages and unfair working conditions that are seen the worker
subjected to not lose their job, and support their families, these are a clear reflection of the
social inequalities of the time replicated in today's society, an example of the above is the
massive and uncontrolled production of clothing, such as dresses, underwear and blouses in
the Asian country where there are intense working hours and salary compensation that are
not adequately related, thus devaluing the condition of the worker.
Now to conclude I will say that the situation is repeated over time, an economic depression
that causes the same effect as in the 30s. workers who struggle to get a job, and keep it,
people working non-stop, like machines. Chaplin reflected the problems of his time that
unfortunately are not facts of the past; We currently observe how mass production and
social inequalities are an endless constant in the daily lives of workers forced to accept
subhuman conditions in exchange for a salary that allows them to meet at least the basic
needs of their families.
