Philosophy of Education 2

My Philosophy of Education

As an aspiring PE teacher it shapes the way I view education. The lens I see in education

is the need for learning more about ourselves. Essentially education to me is the realization of

awareness and how to use that information moving forward. The goals for education would be

the awareness of mental, physical, social, and emotional knowledge. No matter what the

circumstance these attributes are acquired by education. Education can come from different areas

of life whether it be from school, home, or extracurricular activities. Given that there are so

many external factors that influence education, not all education is good education. Teachers get

the opportunity to create awareness for students in order to help them acquire knowledge that

will help them succeed in their endeavors.

Influential Philosophy and People

When taking the quiz on “Inventory of Philosophies of Education,” my overall teaching

philosophies were all very similar scores. I think this makes my teaching style versatile and

flexible. The highest scores I had were perennialism and progressivism. These two focus heavily

on internally processing information. This is shown greatly in my overall philosophy. From a

Physical Education perspective, Lev Vygotsky has been a big contributor to my thoughts on

education. I believe highly in the “zone of proximal development” and learning through

interpersonal connections/ play. In the aspect of physical education in order to improve a skill set

a student needs to be challenged but not overwhelmed. It provides a space to show students their

capabilities and to not underestimate themselves. Through team activities with others (play) it

reveals different learning aspects such as social skills, communication, strategies ect. Also, I

have learned a lot from my courses here at Vanguard. My professors have brought to light

aspects of teaching I overlooked. This is why awareness is important in my own philosophy. I

was able to learn what it means to hit the mark for all students. Teachers teach to both levels of

students because everyone deserves an education that meets their needs.

Three Main Ideas of My Philosophy

I have stated this in previous assignments that the structure of my philosophy falls on proper

management, positivity, and support. In this aspect management would be preparing and

maintaining the class atmosphere. I believe that every great teacher carefully plans and preps for

the day. It sets the tone for the class in their right direction. Proper management is also

categorized as classroom management. Setting an environment that is safe mentally,

emotionally , and physically allows learning to take place.Without proper classroom

management I do not think the best learning can take place. Positivity is a big part of the

foundation I want to build in my classroom. Children in this generation are exposed to a lot of

negativity and struggle with mental health. Students deserve a space in education where they

experience a positive atmosphere. To sum up, the last part of the structure of my philosophy is

bringing the proper support to students. Every student is unique and has their own needs. Many

times students struggle with different issues that prevent learning from taking place. As I have

stated before, every student deserves an education that meets their needs. Bringing the proper

support helps provide that.

Controversies in Education Philosophy

Some of the biggest topics that bring issues in educational philosophies are the social and

cultural aspects of learning. There are some philosophies such as progressivism that want

students to expand culturally and expand at their own pace. Also other philosophies such as

Existentialism that believes with engagement of the world and be given more freedom. What

opposes all of these Philosophies is the Essentialism which is teaching based on basic reading,

writing and math. Students are meant to retain knowledge rather than it be internally processed.

Vision on Education

I have such a positive outlook on education thus far. This stems from the resources incoming

teachers are receiving and their eagerness to change education. Seeing fellow students that want

to change the stigmas around education is encouraging. I also notice that there is a shift in what

education is about. We are focusing less on retention of knowledge and more on internalizing

what the information means to students . My vision for education now is students being able to

deeply think in a space that is supportive. All students will create a world of peace and love

through knowledge and understanding.

Christain Faith in a Public School Setting

Teachers are one of the most influential people in a student’s life. Regardless of the setting I am

placed into I intend to show God’s loving kindness. One of my goals as a public school educator

is to be a role model that embodies Christ to students. Hopefully they are able to embody those

same attributes that Jesus had laid before us and share it to the world. Overall God has called me

to love children and that's what I intend to do. Despite behavior or circumstance God has called a

person to be on their side and I want to take on that call.
