Field Study Area On Becoming a 21st Century Teacher
Learning Episode Formulating One’s Philosophy of Education
Observation Notes

Instructions:
1. Interview your most admired teacher (in elementary, high school, or college) regarding his or her
philosophy of education. Attach his or her photo and write down his or her philosophy in education.
Before attaching his/ her photo, kindly inform him/her that you will use his/her photo in this
worksheet. Afterwards, write your own philosophy of education. Do the same process for yourself.

Philosophy of Education
In reality, my educational philosophy has been
changing throughout my almost 5 years of teaching.
It's changing to reflect what I learned from the past
and according to my current view of education. I
don't follow 1 educational philosophy but a
combination of them.

First, progressivism. Learning is rooted in the

questions of learners that arise through experiencing
the world. Students should test ideas by active
experimentation and this focuses on the whole child
rather than content or teacher.

Another is Social Reconstructionism, a philosophy

that emphasizes the addressing of social questions
and quest to create a better society. By integrating
social issues to my classroom, I'm realizing the
notion of a school being a microcosm of the society.
This will give more relevance to the learning of the
students.

Overall. I believe that a teacher is morally obligated

to see the highest expectation for each student.
Thus, maximizing a positive and forward thinking of
believing on their own potential. I believe that I owe
it to my students to provide a conducive learning
space not only physically but also on how concepts
are taught. And lastly, to be consistent with these
philosophies, I should stay abreast of the latest
educational technologies and incorporate best
practices to my instructional methods and strategies.

2 | Field Study 2 | Learning Assessment

I believe that learning should be enjoyable
because I think children should experience
childhood and the enjoyable discovery process.
Because it promotes deeper, more substantial
learning and greater student engagement,
project-based learning, and inquiry-based
approach are in my belief is the greatest
teaching strategy. I suppose this is because
curiosity is something that all people have at
their core. Project-based learning starts with a
sense of wonder and leads to a more permanent
learning in which students can carry on with
them in the long run, thus helping them become
better learners.

Processing Questions and Analysis

(Note: You can adjust the spacing for you to have more space for your responses)

1. How does your most admired teacher inspire you as a person?

- My favorite teacher's enthusiasm for instruction encouraged me personally. She also showed
me the virtues of teaching. I have witnessed her commitment to teaching and ensuring that her
students are prepared to move on to the following year level. She has motivated me to put in a
lot of effort and develop into a beloved and adored instructor. Seeing her work so diligently late
into the night to provide top-notch teaching materials that could support her discussion makes
me respect her commitment.

2. Where did you base your own philosophy of education? Explain.

- I built my own philosophy on the questions on the form that asks us to describe our
educational philosophies. According to my results, I have a stronger preference for the
educational progressive viewpoint. Personally, I too favor experiential learning, which is the
goal of this philosophy. There are many scientific concepts that are better conveyed through
demonstrations or experiments, especially since science is my major. Students could use that
to actively participate in class and work hands-on on their own projects. Additionally, from
personal experience, I find that learning things through hands-on activities like experiments

helps me to better visualize them.

3. How would you work towards fulfilling your own philosophy of education as a future teacher?
- As a potential teacher, I would want to implement my own educational philosophy by giving my
students practical projects and activities that would actively involve them. I occasionally carried
out experiment activities as a Science teacher to help students understand ideas. I can then
use what they've learned by responding to the queries listed in their experiment handbook.

Field Study Area On Becoming the 21st Century Teacher
Learning Episode The 21st Century Teacher
Observation Notes

Instructions:
1. Ask your most admired teacher which of his or her characteristics make him or her a 21 st Century
teacher. Then, ask the teacher to answer the questions provided.

Characteristics of a 21st Century Teacher

The 21st century skills are the skills that we push our
students to develop but it's also important to take note that
as teachers, we also must be equipped with them. As
teacher with almost 5 years of experience, also
considering the experience of conducting classes amidst a
pandemic, I can confidently say that I have earned my
dues and developed my 21st century skills. There are 3
categories for this: learning skills, literacy skills, and life
skills.

Learning skills such as critical thinking, creativity,

collaboration, and communication are skills that prepared
my mental process to adapt and improve in my work
environment. Although from all the four, I can say that I'm
still working on the collaboration part as I am used to
doing things individually to ensure a controlled quality.

Literacy skills such as information, media, and technology

literacy are top skills that I have and are essential as a
teacher in the modern time. These skills helped me
discern facts and critique information to sieve through fake
news. Technology literacy also equipped me to be ready
to teach remotely and contribute to a functional education
instruction amidst a global pandemic.

And lastly, Life skills. These skills are intangible in life, the
non-negotiables: flexibility, leadership, initiative,
productivity, and social skills. These skills contribute to my
personal and professional qualities.

I possessed the abovementioned 21st century skills, each

may not be a full cup but is present whenever it's needed
and I'm thriving to fill up my cup of each skills one step at
a time.

Interview
1. What made you acquire the skills you have stated above? How do these skills benefit your students?
- What made me acquire these skills is not a specific tangible reason, it just happened. It happened
because in reality, to thrive in a competitive environment, you need to acquire these skills. In order to
be fulfilled with the purpose that you set yourself into, you have to be fully-equipped and looking
forward for a better self, one book, one seminar, one training, one post grad class, one step at a time,
is the best way of fulfilling that. Based on what it did to me, these skills are intended to help students
keep up with the fast pace change in modern markets and global economies. Each skill is unique in
how it helps students, but the common thing is, they're essential in the age of the Internet, the
5 | Field Study 2 | Learning Assessment
Information Age.

2. What specific challenges did you encounter in the course of acquiring these skills? What other skills
do you think you need to acquire in the future?
- As I acquired the skills time after time, there are moments that disturb me, thinking that I already have
a job or that I have already graduated, when will I stop working hard. The best remedy is to pause and
look back to very first reason, GROWTH. Seminars and trainings that will not only take your money,
but also your time and energy. Work experience that may not go with your expectation. Self-doubt that
will cripple your motivation. But to pause and hit play again is a continuation of a story of growth.
And that's one of the skills that I think is needed in the future, a growth mindset. When you are face
with locked door, an upfront and constant growth mindset is very important. Curiosity to explore new
things and also as an active learning style to adapt to the ever-changing business and technology. A
skill that shouldn't be just learned, but also nurtured.

Processing Questions and Analysis

(Note: You can adjust the spacing for you to have more space for your responses)

1. What can you say about the skills acquired by the teacher? What does this imply with regard to the
type of learners this teacher may be assisting in the classroom?
- The instructor has enough developed abilities to qualify as a teacher in the 21st century. The abilities
mentioned above suggest that the learners this teacher is supporting in the classroom are those that
learn visually, aurally, and kinesthetically. She has developed abilities that include flexibility and
empathy, which indicates that she can relate to the kids and adapt to their various learning styles. She
has also listed the trait of being a lifelong student, which may indicate that she is eager to learn more
about the most recent facts available.
2. How do you see yourself as a 21st century teacher? What skills of yours make you an ideal 21st
century teacher?
- I can picture myself as a teacher in the twenty-first century who promotes students' learning through a
variety of interactive, fun activities that unleash their creativity and help them reach their full potential.
As a teacher in the twenty-first century, you no longer spoon-feed material to your students; instead,
you act as a facilitator for their learning. My current abilities make me the perfect teacher for the
twenty-first century: I'm tech-savvy, empathic, critical-thinking, adaptable, creative, passionate, a
lifelong student, and a collaborator.

Insights and Reflection
(Note: You can adjust the spacing for you to have more space for your responses)

What insights and reflection can you derive from this specific field study experience?

- Through this field investigation, I have come to three conclusions. First, teachers can choose from a
variety of educational philosophies based on their personal interests. These educational philosophies
can either be teacher- or student-centered, but their sole objective is to give pupils the greatest
possible educational experience. Second, in order to meet the unique demands of the kids, it is
crucial that we have the traits of a 21st-century teacher because we are now working with students
who are 21st-century learners. These abilities can be learned through practical application as well as
through participation in seminars and workshops that specifically address a quality or attribute of a
21st-century teacher.

Closing Discussion

State five key learning points that you were able to capture in this field study experience.

1. Depending on how they see the teaching-learning process of the pupils, teachers can have a certain

philosophy of education.

2. The foundation of constructivism is the idea that by relating new concepts to their prior knowledge,

students generate their own learning.

3. The principle of learning by doing is a cornerstone of progressivism.

4. Teachers should have the traits of a 21st-century teacher in order to meet the needs of 21st-century

learners.

5. Through experiences, seminars, and workshops, one can learn the abilities required to become a

teacher in the 21st century.
