EDUC 3
ACTIVITY LESSON 1

1. From the various philosophers mentioned in the lesson, which of them caught your
attention the most? Why?
ANSWER: Theodore Brameld was the philosopher mentioned in the lesson who
piqued my interest the most. He stated that education is intended to raise students' awareness of
social issues and to engage them actively in problem-solving. He believes in active problem-
solving as a method of teaching and learning, just like John Dewey. This makes students aware
of what is going on around them and knows how to deal with problems. What drew my attention
to him was his strong belief in equality and equity in society and education. It depicts a
multicultural classroom, regardless of race or socioeconomic status. That everyone, regardless of
race or social class, is entitled to an education.

2. How do you react to this statement “If you cannot bring the learners to the world,
bring the world to the classroom”? Will this go with John Dewey’s philosophy of
education?
ANSWER: As part of John Dewey's educational philosophy, this statement is a
perfect example of learning through experience. For example, this statement implies that as
teachers, we must demonstrate or broaden our teaching methods beyond simply telling students
what a topic is about, but also by allowing them to experience it through demonstration or other
teaching methods. For example, if you are teaching students about living things, how will you
demonstrate or make them understand what a living thing is? You, as a teacher, will find a way
to show them or make them experience those things using various methods. For example, you
could show them some flashcards or make them watch a video or interact with living things.
These are some things you can do to help them learn about living things by exposing them to
them. That is how this statement connects with John Dewey's philosophy of education, "learning
by experience".

3. Let’s reflect!
Two Things I Learned from the Lesson My Thoughts or Reaction
1. There are 3 kinds of Philosophies; Even though there are three types of
Classical, Modern and Post - Modern philosophies, I realized that there is no "best"
one. Some of our professors used classical
philosophies in their classes, while others
used modern or postmodern philosophies, and
still others used a combination of all
philosophies. So, in my opinion, even if you
choose any of these philosophy as your
teaching philosophy, it will still have an
impact on the improvement of your students,
whether they learned something or not. So it
is still up to you to decide how you will teach
the students in order for them to learn or
improve.
2. As George Counts said “School and My reaction to this is that, I agree with
teachers should be agent of change” George Counts as a preservice teacher means
I am still a student, teachers and the school
should be open to new things. Be open
minded in every students’ race, culture,
beliefs, etc…. This is a start for a change as
teachers should be open to unlearn some and
learn new things that will broaden their
minds, due to the fact that teachers are
lifelong learners to give their students quality
learning and some new insights. They will
inspire students and guide them as they
should.

4. Now that you have analyzed the important philosophies on education, develop your
own philosophies of education stating what you think the purpose of
schooling/education is; how subjects be taught; what do you need to know about
students to be able to teach them. Include your idea of good teacher. Formulate one
which you think will be your guiding light in your future career.

ANSWER: As I have analyzed all the important philosophies in education, there are
philosophies that I know I would use in the future for teaching. But for my own philosophy,
teaching a student will be a mixture of those philosophies and depends on how the students
wanted to learn. It is the students’ decision especially me, a BEED pre-service teacher, I am
expected to teach kids with the age range of 6 – 12 where they are still discovering or always
wanting to play, I will do my best to teach students through games and fun experiences. This
experiences will help them in the retention of the lesson. In spite in the way of learning we as
teachers must guide them through their own learning. We must also guide them in what they
want to be in the future. As we are a key to a students’ education. So in conclusion my own
philosophies of education are letting the students choose the way of learning and let them learn
by experience, also besides that we are their guide for their own future. Therefore, being a
teacher is a key on a students’ future.
