INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background and Information.

Condom is one of the contraceptive method that are made to prevent unintended

pregnancy and widely used by many various population in this world. Condom is

made from a very thin latex based on polyisoprene or polyurethane and physically

design to prevent the semen from entering vagina and uterus during ejaculation. The

effectiveness of the condom are 98% when the condom is used in the correct way.

The condom is easily access as mainly health centre, sexual health clinic and

contraception clinic. And to made it more convenience, in our country our Ministry of

Health provide it for free.

According to International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health

(2022), data in Malaysia revealed that 49% of sexually active students are unaware

that condoms can reduce the risk of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and

Sexual Transmitted Infection (STI) transmission. In addition, a study from the

Malaysian Journal of Pharmacy revealed that only 8.5% of university student

respondents have adequate knowledge of contraception methods. This statement

encourage us to do this research to evaluate the level of awareness among students

in ILKKM Sungai Buloh regarding the use of condom as prevention of HIV and STI

also as contraceptive method to prevent unplanned pregnancy.

1.2 Problem statement

According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated about 340 million new

cases of sexually transmitted infection (STIs) occur throughout the world every year

among men and women ages 15-49 years. The most effective method proven to

prevent the HIV and STI transmission is condom. Other than that, condoms being

used as contraceptive method to prevent unintended pregnancy. The research that

will be conduct is to assess the awareness and perception of student ILKKM Sungai

Buloh regarding the condom use during sexual intercourse. According to Stover J,

Rosen JE, Carvalho MN, Korenromp EL, Friedman HS, Cogan M, et al. (2017) ,

condom use during sexual intercourse can reduce the morbidity and mortality related

HIV illness. The condom will act as a barrier to prevent the transmission of STI

during sexual intercourse. This research will be conduct to evaluate the efficiency of

condom in preventing unintended pregnancy as well as the most preferable

contraceptive methods among students.

1.3 General objective

1. To identify the perception of using condom among student at ILKKM Sungai

Buloh.

Specific objectives

1. To analyse the level of awareness using condom as harm reduction to prevent

Sexual Transmitted Infection (STI)

2. To discuss the effectiveness of using condom as contraceptive method to avoid

unintended pregnancy

1.4 Research question

- What is the level of awareness of student ILKKM regarding condom use to prevent

HIV and STI

- What is the perception of student ILKKM Sungai Buloh regarding condom use as

contraceptive method

- What is the factor that makes the student less likely to use the condom during

sexual intercourse
1.5 Significant of the study

To community.

The significant of this study to community is to spread the awareness on the

importance of condom use during sexual intercourse. This condom will act as a

barrier to prevent many Sexual Transmitted Infection ( STI ) that can lead to life

threatening condition such as Syphilis, Herpes virus, HIV and many more. This STI if

not prevented from early can bring to serious complication such as damages to the

vital organ. Besides that, this study also help to promote the use of condom as

contraceptive as family planning. This method can prevent from unplanned

pregnancy and avoid the negative outcome such as baby dumping, child abuse and

many more.

To Health care worker.

The significant of this study to health care worker is to help reducing the number of

patient having health problem related to STI. Hence, this can reduce the waiting hour

at clinic and health facility and improving the health care services to the client.

Besides that, this study can help to promote the safe way of contraceptive among

the population and help to give useful information regarding the use of condom. This

can lead to spread of awareness and knowledge which also help to increase the

quality of life.
1.6 Operational definition

Awareness

Awareness is an understanding of a situation based on information given or even

come from experience. Awareness basically known as knowledge and

understanding that something is exist. In this term, awareness is simplified as a state

or a condition where a subject is aware of information that given by an action or by

an experience.

Condom mainly known as a barrier that are made of a thin latex to prevent the

semen from entering uterus via vagina during ejaculation after sexual intercourse. It

is usually used as a method of contraceptive and also as a practice of a safe sex to

prevent from sexual infection. There are two types of condom, that are consist of

male condom and female condom. The male condom is usually known by the public

whereby the female condom are rarely known by our community as it is less

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Introduction

A literature review is an overview of the previously publish works on a topic . The

term can refer to a full scholarly woks such as articles, books, journals, and other

relevant resources. It provide an overview of current knowledge, allowing you to

identify relevant theories, methods, and gaps in the existing research that can apply

in a paper, thesis or dissertation topic. A good literature review does not just

summarize sources but it can analyzes, synthesizes and critically evaluates to give a

clear picture of the state of knowledge on the subject. (Published on January 2,2023

articles by Shona McCombes)

2.2 Conceptual Framework

Conceptual framework can help us structure complex analyses, make better

decisions and deliver persuasive presentation. The great thing about conceptual

framework is that can help us turn abstract thoughts that exist in mind into concrete,

tangible products that other people can see and appreciate.

(Conceptual Framework Book , 20 November 2018, by Chinmay Kakatkar). Hence,

based on theories a conceptual model is purposed to promote a condom usage and

safe sex practices among students. Other than that, those who unaware about
condom usage and its benefit would be unlikely to be interested in adapting safe sex

behaviours. Thus, they would be in precontemplation stage.

2.3 Sociodemographic of condom usage

Sociodemographic refer to a combination of social and demographic factors that

define people in a specific group or population. The global burden of sexual

transmited infection (STIs)remains high. An estimated 1 million new cases of

chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and and trichomoniasis were reported per day in

2016 by the World Health Organization (WHO). In Malaysia, they were reported

cases of gonorrhoea and syphilis detected in males with < 10% active syphilis

detected among Female Sexual Worker (FSW). The HIV epidemic in Malaysia is

more concentrated among high risk key populations of People Who Inject Drugs

(PWID),Transgender (TG), Female Sexual Worker (FSW) and Men who have Sex

with Men (MSM). However, since 2011, there has been a shift in trend of mode

transmission for HIV from PWID to sexual transmission. Furthermore, new HIV

infections are reported highest among MSM of ages 20 to 39 years old in 2017.
2.4 Psychological impact

STIs are associated with an important psychological and social burden. Individual

who have been diagnosed with STI receive often a very negative reaction. They may

lose partner or experience intimate partner violence.

Therefore, the best reliable methods to avoid STI are abstinence from any sexual

activities or staying faithful in a long term mutually monogamous relationship with an

uninfected partner.(Malaysian Journal of Medicine and Health Science)
