Police racial profiling has become a growing problem in the Fairfield county of Connecticut.

Police racial profiling is the tern used when people belonging to different races, ethnic

backgrounds, or color are not treated equally as the rest of people by the people. Racial profiling

is a common problem of those countries, cities or towns in which the population is constituted of

a number of different castes, colors and backgrounds. This practice is considered illegal in

certain countries. In the US racial profiling is performed against the blacks, Latinos and the

people who wear a turban on their head.

Connecticut is a state of US in which police racial profiling has increased a lot. In towns

like Milford, Stratford, Fairfield, Westport and Greenwich racial profiling has increased to a

dangerous extent. Despite the increasing issue of racial profiling, the nation is showing little

concern over this issue. According to a research it was found out that Black and Latino’s are 30

times more likely to be stopped and searched by the police without any serious reason and

suspicion than the White. And this figure has increased from the past year. The minorities in any

area are usually the one who have to suffer from racial profiling. It is generally believed that the

minorities of a nation are the ones who are involved in causing riots, thefts, robbery and car

snatching. In Fairfield county racial discrimination is very alarming. Most of the towns in

Connecticut have a majority population of Blacks and Latinos and therefore police racial

profiling is very common in these areas. The White and Black still live apart from each other in

these areas and do not prefer to make friends with each other. (Holbert, 2004)

The government has made promises that they will eliminate police racial profiling in US

and make sure that all citizens of the country are secure and safe. But the government has failed

to do so. The people other than White people are still now and then stopped and inquired without

any reason. This has increased the feeling of hostility among the Blacks and Latinos for the

White people as a result of which they try to create troubles for the White people in order to take

revenge. Many riots that have occurred in the previous years were mostly because of racial

profiling. The Black people demand that they also have some self-respect and when the police

stop them and search them without a search warrant and any solid reason just because they are

Black, they feel very insulted and this increases the feeling of hatred for the White.(Holbert,

2004)

As a safety precaution the Black people teach their children that Black men must take

extra care while stopped by a police because if a Black misbehaves with the police the police can

easily make it a serious issue and can even get you jailed on this petty issue. It is found that for

the same offense a White will be exempted whereas a Black can be severely punished for the

same issue. So a Black must be extra careful while confronting a police.

Although statistics clearly show that it is not the Black who are majorly involved in

keeping illegal weapons and having drugs but about 70% of drug users were found to be White

as compared to only 15% Black and 8% Latino. It is the duty of Law enforcement agencies that

they protect the people without any discrimination but when the law enforcement agencies

practice racial profiling the people will not feel secure and safe. Following such practice it is

assumed that the Whites are the people who abide by the law whereas Blacks and Latinos are

criminals although this is not true. The White people know that they are free to do whatever they

like because the police will never catch them for little issues. So it is now observed that the white

people are day by day greatly getting involved in street crimes and carrying drugs and illegal

weapons with them.

To improve the relation between people and police and law enforcement agencies it is

necessary that the people are satisfied with the performance of the police and are happy with

them then only the people will cooperate with the police, report crimes and present themselves as

witnesses. But by this practice of the police it becomes difficult for the police to carry out

investigations in areas where the Black and Latino people are in majority because the people are

not ready to help them out with any case. This can result in an increase of crimes as the culprit

will not be caught. For a police force to succeed in solving any case and maintaining law and

order in any country it is necessary there should be good ties between the police and the people.

According to the fourteenth amendment of the US all people will be provided with

protection without any discrimination. But as racial profiling is being practiced it is very obvious

that equality is not being practiced. The Black and Latinos are likely to be stopped and searched

more than white people and the Black and Latinos are not considered as law abiding citizens

while the white people as law abiding citizens. This creates a feeling of aggression and

resentment for the police. (Holbert, 2004)

The Black and Latino people when they see and experience such behavior of the police they

start to do go against the police and this give rise to riots, uprisings and disturbances in different

part of the country.

Discriminating people on the basis of race, ethnic background, color or language is an

extremely wrong practice. People lose their sense of security when living in such an environment

and become more violent and aggression. In this time when the world has so much advanced

discrimination of the people must be eradicated from the roots. And particularly the police must

be trained in a way such that they provide security to all the people of whom they are made in

charge and not racial basis and suspicions must also be made with honesty not on racial or ethnic

backgrounds.
