Elderly Population
Elderly population has always been a topic of great interest for me. Elderly population
have time and again attracted me towards them and drawn my attention a number of times and
have always made me feel a soft corner for them. Elderly people are that part of the population
of the society which is the most neglected part of the society and are usually referred to as grown
up kids. It is the age when a person has grown to its full but mentally the person is equivalent to
that of a kid, after having known much the person reaches an age in which he knows nothing.
This age is a very difficult period of life for the person himself as well as the surrounding people
(Jurkowski, 2008).
The course work that has been taught and is being taught has helped to motivate me more
towards the working for the elderly people of the society and safe guarding their rights. It has
opened various new aspects of working for the elderly people and helped me gain knowledge on
the rights of the elderly people. Besides the course work the field works that have been
conducted have also helped to build my skills in performing various social activities for the
elderly people. It is certainly a difficult task to handle and cooperate with the elderly people
because their level of accepting things gets reduced and by studying the course work and
participating in the field work actively it has taught me how to handle critical situations and
handle with the elderly people in a way that is most effective and productive and beneficial for
them. Through the course work we have been able to understand the needs and requirements of
the elderly people as well as to make friends with them and understand them (Lechner & Neal,
1999).
It is of extreme importance that we understand the feelings and needs of the elderly
people then only it is possible that we can work for the welfare of the elderly people. Usually

everyone suggests that they understand the feelings of the elderly people and they are well aware
of the requirements and needs of the old people but the truth is that no one is aware of the needs
of the old people except for the elderly people themselves. Providing support to the elderly
people helps them to get strong and make them believe that they are still an important part of
one’s life. Involving the older people in decision making helps to make them feel strong and
happy. The people must endeavor to be a part of the social work and become an advocate for the
elderly people simply by contacting any relevant organization and volunteering in it or helping
by donating money. Advocacy and creating awareness among the mass population is of utmost
importance because the issue of elderly people is a topic that is of least concern for the
governmental and non-governmental bodies. It is an important task to bring about a change in the
attitude of the society and the governmental bodies so that they pay attention towards the elderly
working for the elderly people and starting different campaigns and programs to teach and make
it clear to the population that how important are the elderly population for the society and the
ways and techniques that must be adopted in order to deal with and handle elderly people
efficiently and make them realize their importance for the society (Desjardins, Dumas &
Statistics Canada, 1993). It is high time that the people realize the importance of the elderly
population in the society. I have been active in social activities and campaigns that have been
working for the elderly population for the past quite years and have managed to play an
Being a part of the field works and various non-governmental organizations and various
campaigns I see myself deep into this work, working eagerly and actively for the elderly people
and helping them to get their rights. It has always been my passion to work, do something good

for the elderly population and help protect their rights because it has always remained the most
neglected part of the society and my mission is to bring out this part of the population out of the
dark and make the people realize that they are an important part of the society and can contribute
much for the development of the society. I wish to continue my noble work and make significant
changes in the society’s attitude so that they can also realize their importance and let them play
