Sir, Sorry I’m Late

ANHS digs in Students’ Absenteeism

Admin initiates adopt a student program

By: Leigh Ann Kate C. De Chavez

Despite having morning classes, a Grade 12 student at Alcadesma National High School (ANHS)

would get up earlier than everyone else in the morning to get ready to be at work in time with his

father, Harlie spends three days working for his allowance and the remaining two days attending

classes.

According to, (survey)

"I’m sorry, sir, for being absent for three days," Harlie would frequently utter while his head

bowed in shame.

Delivering his reasons of having frequent absents, the publication found out that families like

Harlie’s are forced to look for additional hands to help them meet their finances.

"We should not judge them this early," Mr. Dennis Retanal, Senior High School Coordinator

said. "There must be explanations for these students’ absences, and we need to be aware of

them." In connection with this, ANHS teachers conducted a home visitation and asked the

student’s parents to know the reasons behind their absenteeism.

"Kulang po kasi pera naming para mapapasok si Harlie at ang kanyang mga kapatid sa loob ng

limang araw," Nanay Medorie said.

"We discovered that these families struggle financially and depend on their kids to work for

themselves"., Mr. Dennis announced. "Together with the alumni, it is our responsibility as an

educational institution to assist them in shedding this weight".

The alumni, in collaboration with ANHS, decided to create the Adopt A Student Program to help

the impacted families financially by giving them 250 pesos and 3 kilos of rice every week,

allowing the students to focus on finishing their education instead of working.

Students like Harlie are now given a great opportunity to avail themselves of quality education

despite their poverty. "Makakaya ko na ‘to", Harlie commented with a smile on his face.
9 out of 10 students enter school without eating vegetables-survey finds

By: Alexa Grace Marasigan

According to a poll on students’ eating habits conducted by the Iskaner, junior high school

students at Alcadesma National High School (ANHS) are more likely to consume canned foods

and instant noodles than vegetables for breakfast.

The survey discovered that most of the students do not eat any vegetables at all. (facts)

According to the Iskaner, 9 out of 10 students in Junior High School Department reported eating

no vegetables at all on the days they were surveyed.

Janice Guillermo, designated school nurse reminded that the Department of Health (DOH)

advises eating vegetables with every meal and snack. "Vegetables provide a wealth of nutrients

that the body needs but cannot get from other foods".

These results are alarming since students’ eating habits have an impact on their academic

achievement. Poor eating habits can cause children to have poor nutrition as adults, which can

influence how their brains develop and operate.

Additionally, the survey showed a decrease in fruit consumption among junior high school

students. Less than 10 of the students say that they regularly consume fruit.

Local governments can also help people change how their kids eat. According to the mayor’s

office, they will start a program that will promote the students’ dietary needs and make nutritious

meals more readily available and affordable, giving individuals with lower incomes an

opportunity to acquire healthier foods for their families.

ANHS gives back in outreach program

By: Jacky Rafol

As families remain isolated for over a year because of the pandemic, Alcadesma National High

School (ANHS) spearheaded by the Senior High School Department continues in supporting the

community through outreach programs.

ANHS faculty, together with their students, executed outreach programs for the residents of

Barangay Alcadesma, Bansud, launched on October 25, 2022.

The program aims to promote awareness about health and hygiene and the importance of having

nutritious meals regularly with the help of the project implementers and Alcadesma’s local

government, led by Brgy. Captain Noel F. Roxas.

Teachers conducted a program where they taught and discussed proper hygiene, such as proper

handwashing and sanitary practices, among the residents to prevent diseases during this health

crisis.

ANHS also distributed cooked food and food packs to families residing in Barangay Alcadesma.

Volunteers view this activity as a way to express gratitude and share their blessings, as well as a

way of socializing and doing something productive after a long period of being stuck inside their

homes.
shaping female studes to empowered womanhood

ANHS Celebrates Women’s Month 2023

By: Alexandria Welwyn Galabit

To honor and acknowledge women in all appearances, contributions, roles, and perspectives

around the world, Alcadesma National High School (ANHS) celebrates Women’s Month with

the theme "We for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society" on March 29.

Ms. Y’altricia Dawa, the SSG Vice-President hosted the said event. Mr. Edmar Peralta, a Grade

10 student offered the opening prayer. Mr. Roilan Robledo, Master Teacher I, extends a warm

greeting to all of the instructors, students, and staff.

Mr. Arnold Antonio, the SSG coordinator, paid tribute to all the women in the ANHS and gave a

memorable quote, "Babae ka, hindi babae ka lang," which had a profound effect on the teachers

and students of Alcadesma National High School community.

The female teachers and students were entertained by several hip-hop performances by grade

10 students. An unplanned pageant highlighted the beauty of women. Female teacher

representatives of ANHS set the stage on fire. Ms. Bhea Ricalde and Mr. Paul Ricalde serenade

all the women with their heart-warming songs.

75% of ANHS students can’t detect fake news, survey says

BY: Ladylyn R. Malupa

A study from the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration's
Communication Department revealed that neither kids nor teens are very concerned about the
veracity of the content they encounter on social media, which makes them unable to detect
whether certain news stories are real or fake.

The school publication conducted a survey in which students were presented with four news
articles and stories from the internet and were tasked with picking which among them were true.
The results showed that 2 out of 10 students chose the correct option among the four options.

Due to the emergence of different social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and
TikTok, they became more popular among teens because of their convenience.

"I always see headlines like this on Facebook and often believe them based on the construction
of the articles and also the photos attached to every post".

Carla Casapao, a grade 11 student, shared her experience analyzing whether the news she sees is
true or not.

"This activity showed how students can help their fellow students with experiences your
generation is facing nowadays, just like your exposure to fake news", Mr. Jemin Badilla, an ICT
teacher, said.

"Having campus journalists who are concerned about delivering the truth became instruments in
providing knowledge among the students of ANHS about the importance of assessing and
analyzing articles they see on social media, which became a huge problem, especially during the
pandemic", he added.

"Students should develop these skills because they will become very useful for them in the
future", Badilla concluded.
DepEd’s call for enhancing reading skills: ANHS adapts Brigada Pagbasa

By: Dea Alexi T. Carcosia

"In response to the call of the Department of Education (DepEd) to enhance the reading skills of

students, Alcadesma National High School continues the implementation of the Brigada Pagbasa

program.

Brigada Pagbasa aims to equip students with skills and strategies for them to obtain

comprehensive information and construct meaning from text while cultivating a love for

literature by expanding experiences and viewpoints and broadening the understanding of humans

in it. Nature and transforming one’s value system

"This program was launched to enhance students reading skills, especially in the English

context." Mrs. Julie Ann Luzon, the senior high school English teacher, stated

She also added that, throughout the years, Brigada Pagbasa has been effective in the sense that

the students are aware of the program in which they are participating.

"We implement this program to continue instilling among the students and teachers the

importance of learning how to read and analyze English contexts and also to meet Secretary

Briones’ advocacy for enhancing the reading skills of students," Luzon said.

After three months of implementing the program, teachers awarded the students who most

improved during the execution of Brigada Pagbasa.

Although National Reading Month is normally celebrated annually every November, the

school’s Brigada Pagbasa is being implemented throughout the school year.

Grade 10 Students to Stay in ANHS- Survey Says

By: Marjory Garcia

A total of 140 out of 200 grade 10 students prefer to take their senior high school studies at

Alcadesma National High School (ANHS), the latest research from The Scanner revealed.

The DepEd Order 19 s. 2008, or the No Collection Policy in All Public Elementary and

Secondary Schools, and its location in the municipality were among the common reasons given

by the students for their school preference.

"Maga-stay lang ako dito dahil malapit sa bahay namin at libre and pag-aaral. Magiging mas

madali din ito para sa tatay ko na ihatid ako sa school nang maaga," one of the grade 10 students

said.

Moreover, despite being doubtful about whether to stay or not, Peralta from Grade 10 Aristotle is

positive that her choice of staying at his Alma Mater will bring out the best in him.

"Considering the learning experience, although kulang parin ang facilities, I bet to stay because

we all know that senior high school teachers here are approachable and can bring good quality

teaching."

In breakdown, 67 percent, or 140 of the eyed entrants, will enroll in academic tracks, while the

other 49 will be on Technical Vocational and Livelihood Tracks.

Meanwhile, 30 percent, or 60 of the total students in Grade 10, opt to transfer to nearby schools

in Bansud, Oriental Mindoro, such as RSHS and Pag-asa National High School.
"It will be better if I transfer to a private school because they have more advanced facilities

where I can improve my ICT skills," Jade Malabanan said, although he is not yet sure as to what

school he will be enrolling in.

Consequently, Mr. Dennis A. Retanal, SHS Coordinator, is positive that the number of enrollees

in SHS will balloon up to 190, considering other students from outside of ANHS will enroll in

the school.
Choose your track wisely- De Honor

By Art Reyven M. Cuarto

With the aim of providing knowledge about choosing the right Senior High School track and
career path, Alcadesma National High School held a career guidance seminar, December 9.

The said activity was designed to discuss topics regarding choosing the right SHS academic
track, such as ABM, GAS, HUMSS, and TVL tracks like ICT and EIM.

The participants are encouraged to wear their desired profession in the future and act as one of
them until the activity ends.

"Dapat alamin nyo muna ang mga interest and skills nyo bago kayo pumili ng track nyo at dapat
connected din sya sa desired profession nyo when you enter college, so choose your track wisely.
Huwag kayong magmadali na basta nandun kaibigan nyo at mga dating kaklase ay sasama na din
kayo. You have to be independent and know what you really want and your expertise," Mrs.
Shiela De Honor, SHS Designated Guidance Counselor, said.

Representatives from PESO Bansud and DOLE joined the activity to share useful information
based on what is happening regarding jobs and opportunities in local as well as international
areas.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Valerie Roda was assigned to discuss curriculum exits for SHS.

And Mrs. Jerly Ann Dael tackled the different skills that a person should have depending on
what job or track they want to pursue.

And lastly, Mrs. Jennifer Alo gave information about employment.

"The activity gave me a lot of ideas and knowledge that will help me decide what I want to do
after I graduate from SHS," Ejay Sulit, a Grade 12 GAS student, concluded

High School Library Users up by 15%

By: Hendrix Alalid

According to the current library report, there is 15% higher than the statistics from the first
quarter of school year 2022-2023, which means that there has been a recent increase in the
number of high school students using the libraries.

The increase of library users was ascribed to recent library improvements like the installation of
new books that the students may use in finding answers to their assignments and especially to
the research among senior high school students.

Additionally, statistics indicate a sizable number of Grade 11 students, who made a bulk of
library users in the most recent quarter with an average of 100 students.

Marilou De Villa, the school librarian, claims that the school continuous to encourage students
to read more by giving each grade level time every week to visit the library.

“Natutuwa ako na kahit available ang internet ay madami pa ding mga batang mas gustong
mag-aral at mag-hanap ng mga kasagutan sa loob ng library. Dahil sabi nila mas tahimik at mas
maiintindihan nila kung dito sila mag-aaral,’’De Villa added.
ANHS Coordinators implements Gulayan sa Paaralan

By: Maximo Balingasa

To encourage healthy diet and good planting practices, Alcadesma National High School (ANHS)
implements its annual Gulayan sa Paaralan.

This activity is designed to teach students about the importance of planting fruits and
vegetables around their area and promote healthy diet.

available in planting their crops as well as those recycled ones.

At the end of each quarter, their gulayan garden will be judged or assessed by the chosen panel
of judges and will be rated according to a given rubrics. At the end of the school year, the
section that gained the highest score will receive a special prize.

“It is very important to teach our students on how they can produce their own crops at school
and their homes, especially nowadays that fruits and vegetables are becoming more and more
expensive in the market’’.

“We learned many things when it comes to planting and it is also a fun thing to do with my
classmates’’.
Teachers, students join in high extent

By: Leslie Nicole De Chavez

For the third time this school year, Alcadesma National High School joined in the 3 rd Quarter
Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), led
by Donato Sanchez, head of NDDRMO, to better equip the members of the community in
responding to a possible earthquake, March 9.

Students from grades seven to twelve participated in the sake drill, including the teaching and
non-teaching staffs.

"The event drew mixed reactions from students; some are liking it for the mastery of the routine,
while others are bashing the repetitive drills for disrupting classes.

ANHS coordinator of Disaster Risk Reduction, Randolph Sadaba, emphasized that the objective
of the series of drills is more than the duck-cover-hold technique, as it also aims to train students
to become responders and active volunteers where they need to do an emergency rescue of the
victim and not simply an evacuee.

Mr. Alex M. Magbanua, the school’s principal, also pointed out that regular checking of
attendance and the incident command system is necessary so everybody will be aware of how to
use them in preparation for the actual disaster.

He openly applauded the improvement of the program, voicing the faster response from the
whole student body.

"Mas maayos at maganda and earthquake drill na ito kumpara dun sa mga nakaraan."

The NDRRMO ensures that this event will continue until the last quarter of this year.

Parent’s dissatisfied with DepEd’s 100 m ban

By: Johan Dasas

The Department of Education (DepEd) banned the sale of cigarettes or other tobacco products
within a 100-meter radius of the school in accordance with DepEd Order No. 46, S. 2016.

Parents strongly condemned the presence of stores openly selling banned products.

According to General PTA President Ryan Siena, there is a need for effective implementation of
the said order since there are still stores selling cigarettes around the school area.

"May mga tindahan pa din akong napapansin na nagtitinda ng mga sigarilyo sa mga studyante
natin kahit pasok sa 100m radius," Siena added.

"Kapag patuloy silang nagbenta, madaming estudyante ang maeengganyo na bumili kasi iisipin
nila ay hindi naman pala bawal yun," said one parent.

One of the senior high school PTA officers said that she praised the community for cooperating
with them, especially the parents, to stop this problem.

"Dapat talaga katulong namin kayong mga magulang para mabilis nating maaksyunan and
ganitong problema." "Sana hanggang huli ay kaagapay naming kayo," she added.

Both the parents and the administration relayed the concern of the barangay and asked for the
closure of the establishments openly violating the department order.
