PART 1 Study the example and usage of be + going to (“gonna”) + [base verb] in the past.

When thinking about his mother’s reaction to his tattoo, the speaker says...

“ My mom in particular hates my three tattoos that I have, so I couldn’t

imagine what she was gonna say when she saw my neck tattoo.”

When we refer to the future from a time in the past, we often use the structure be + going to
(“gonna”) + [base verb]. We often use this structure to refer to a plan in the past that did not
actually happen, but in the example above, it refers to a prediction the speaker had in the past
about the future.

NEXT EXAMPLES I was gonna get a tattoo, but then I decided not to. (plan in the past)
I knew my parents weren’t gonna like my tattoo! (prediction in the past)

On the first line of each sentence, write the correct form of be + gonna + [base verb].
PART 2
Use a verb that fits the context. On the second line, convert the sentence to the past.

EX. When my mom sees my neck tattoos, I think she is gonna cry .

When my mom saw my neck tattoos, I thought she was gonna cry.

1 It’s hard to imagine how painful getting a tattoo .

2 I know that getting a tattoo much more than getting a piercing.

3 I’m not sure whether my parents my small tattoos.

4 I have a feeling your face tattoos your chances of getting a job.

5 I’m glad you’re not getting those tattoos. They good on you!

EXAMPLE EXPERIENCE: You got fully covered in tattoos

I grew up in a very conservative Asian household, so my mom used to associate

tattoos with pretty much all the stereotypes you can think of. I was always taught
to believe that tattoos are only meant for gangs and dropouts.

I was never the rebellious type, but I was always obsessed with tattoos. Tattoos are more
accepted today, but I wasn’t sure whether there was a line that was gonna be crossed if I got
a neck or face tattoo. I just wanted to know what it was gonna feel like to be fully covered.

My mom in particular hates my three tattoos that I have, so I couldn’t imagine what she
was gonna say when she saw my neck tattoo. When I called her and showed her my tattoo, I
thought she was gonna cry!
