Employee Perceptions of job satisfaction: Comparative Study on Indian Banks. Asian

Academy of Management journal, vol.14, no.2, 65-78, July 2009

1. Article review

1.1. About the article

Us I observed that the article is built on both theoretical and empirical base because the
article incorporate or show the findings, observations, and conclusions of other researches
related with this article. In addition to this after extensive literature review the article
develops conceptual frame work that consists of four factors that are used to evaluate the
level of job satisfaction, those are; payment (compensation), growth, social environment, and
job security that are used to determine the level of job satisfaction.

1.2. Purpose of the article

The aim of this study is to evaluate the level of job satisfaction of employees on both public
and private sector banks, to examine whether the sectorial differences in terms of
compensation, growth opportunities, social environment and job security influence
employee’s perceptions of job satisfaction and to show the level of job satisfaction have a
positive impact on the performance of the organizations and its productivity on the public and
private sector banks. From the study the level of job satisfaction on public and private sector
banks are significantly different. It was found that private sector bank employees perceive
greater satisfaction with pay, social and growth aspects of job than public sector bank
employees however public sector bank employees perceive greater satisfaction with job
security than private sector bank employees.

1.3 Central argument of the article

The central argument of the study is that the job satisfactions levels of employees of the
public and private sector banks are significantly different on the productivity of the company.
However, I disagree on the argument, because the sectoral difference is not affect the level of
job satisfaction on employees. According to (Hind A. M. Bader, Intan H.M. Hashim,
Norzarina Mohd Zaharim, 2005), whether the banks are private sector or public sector there
is no significant different on the level job satisfaction of employee’s Performance. Because

1
the job satisfaction level of employees are personal attitude not organizational. Due to this the
sectorial differences have no significant difference on the level of job satisfaction.
From the article leadership is conceptualised in terms of job satisfaction of the employees
how the manager motivates and increases the level of job Satisfaction of employees that
works in private and public sector bank using the factors that are used in writing this article
those are; payment (compensation), growth, social environment, and job security that are
used to determine the level of job satisfaction

1.4 Core issues from the article

From the article the interpersonal managerial approaches are discussed, because the
researcher focuses on the middle level employees of the bank.
The study was developed by Hackman and Oldham’s job characteristic model (JCM),
(Hackman &Oldham’s, 1995) to determine the level of job satisfaction & the model
developed five core job dimensions, which influences the psychological states and those
psychological states then influences the job satisfactions of employees. Lock (1976), Defines
job satisfaction as a pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisals of
one’s job or job experience.
From the article fulfilling the need of employees is the main consideration in order to satisfy
the employees on their job so as to increase the productivity of the organization.
As general from the article, the factors that affect the job satisfaction level of employees on
both public and private sector banks are discussed on the article. These factors are either
positively or negatively affect the performance of the organizations productivity. In addition
to these factors the difference in background and work culture in the organization affects the
job satisfaction level of employees

1.5 Research Methodology
The target of the population in this study is private and public sector bank employees in
India. The sample consisted of 340 bank employees from both sectors. There were 230 bank
employees from the public sector bank. Most people in the Job Diagnostic Survey by
Hackman and Oldham (1975) was used to ascertain the level of job satisfaction. This study
used independent samples t-test and qualitative analysis to study the differences in employee
attitudes. In the study both the qualitative and quantitative techniques are used. The
Qualitative analysis of the data was done using content analysis. The study adopted
convenience sampling approach. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was performed for the
measurement model.

1.6 General critics

1.6.1. Strength
 The researcher sufficient background information for the intended audience that gives
enough knowledge about it that is supported by empirical evidence.
 The author includes an appropriate research design, sampling techniques, and method
of data analysis.
 This article gives direction to managers to determine the needs and perceptions of
employees and to improve their level of satisfaction on the job to increase their
productivity on their activity.
 The researcher has developed hypothesis that are appropriate for conducting this
research.

1.6.2. Weakness
 The data collection was restricted to only two banks; this doesn’t indicate the overall
information on Indian banking industry.
 There is no clear identification of sample selection criteria and sampling technique,
which means the sample taking system, was not proportional in number regarding to
the two sectors.
I understand from this article, how to review a work of different researchers like journals,
articles, published books and so on. To write this first we should pin point the purpose of the
research, and then to understand the full topic what the writer should wanted to show to the
readers and we should evaluate the methodology used in the article is appropriate or not. So
generally when we write scientific articles we should consider the above points.
