Aims / objectives of Guidance and Counseling in Schools

1) To help the total development of a student


- The emphasis on intellectual development alone may not be enough. For
this reason guidance and counseling is aimed at helping students to
understand themselves and their various needs in order to develop their
potential fully.

2) To help learners to make proper choices in life.


At a particular level students need to make decision on career that they
need to follow. For this reason they need guidance in order to make better
choices for proper goal achievement in life.

3) To help student in professional development


There are always changing requirements for industrial job and changing
labour market trends. Guidance and counseling therefore provides help to
the students especially in their early stages of this development.

4) Help students make proper adjustment at school and at homes.


Guidance and counseling give skills which help learners to balance
between school activities and home activities for proper development.

5) To supplement the effort of parents guidance


Some students come from families where parents are not able to provide
adequate developmental guidance. Guidance and counseling is therefore
useful in supplementing the efforts made by parents at home to help their
children in their developmental process.

6) To motivate the disadvantaged students.


- Students from disadvantaged sections of society have their own needs or
special needs which sometimes requires professional intervention.
Guidance and counseling therefore facilitates help to such needs.
7) To help reduce wastage and stagnation
Many students drop out of school system due to lack of proper guidance
and knowledge on what to do. Good guidance program in school will help
to reduce this wastage at various levels of education.

8) To ensure proper use of time outside classroom.


- It is always essential that positive directions be provided to guide students
on how they should use their time outside class. Guidance and counseling
is suited for this purpose.
