VI. NARRATIVE REPORT

" Narrative report on Scientific Session 2 during the 2022 COPD Month Celebration: Pulmonary
Rehabilitation on COPD Patients: The Role of Respiratory Therapists”

The Respiratory Therapy Society conducted a scientific session entitled “Pulmonary Rehabilitation on COPD
Patients: The Role of Respiratory Therapists” during the COPD Month Celebration on the morning session of
December 1, 2022 through a virtual platform with the aim of improving the quality of life of COPD Patients
through understanding the different roles of RTs in conducting Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

The symposium was spearheaded by Ms. Maria Gemma A. Betos, MMHoA, RTRP, who comprehensively
presented and explicated the wide roles of Respiratory Therapists in Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Alongside with
her content outline presented are the (1) Definition of Pulmonary Rehabilitation; (2) Candidates for Pulmonary
Rehabilitation Program; (3) Benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program; (4) Components of Pulmonary
Rehabilitation Program; (5) Respiratory Therapists Roles; and (6) Outcome Measures.

In addition, Ms. Betos further explained the momentous history of how pulmonary rehabilitation and
comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation program both started and came into place. Ms. Betos also gave an
insightful understanding and easy-to-remember topics and concepts about the stages of COPD, the cycle of
dyspnea, patient assessment, educational topics such as breathing strategies and 5p’s of energy conservation,
which are all important and beneficial in aiding COPD patients through performing Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

On the other hand, Ms. Betos also shared her treasured experiences as a Respiratory Therapist who worked in a
Hospital and treating different cases of patients undergoing a pulmonary rehabilitation program. Indeed, she
emphasized on her lecture that pulmonary rehabilitation is now firmly established as a standard care for the
management of OPD patients despite the remaining challenges associated with achieving it. More so, she ended
up her presentation in a giving a take home message, reminding everyone the important roles that Respiratory
Therapists must exemplified and put into hearts in Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
