You will master how to identify standard methods and techniques used in performing
experiments.
In using this module, you should be able to:
1. know some of the research materials and procedures;
2. compare laboratory techniques and methods; and
3. carry-out tasks designed for the lesson.
LESSON 1
Research Materials and Procedures
Pre-Test
I. Multiple Choice: On a separate sheet of paper, write the letter of the best answer.
1. Which of the following is NOT a laboratory technique and method?
A. microbiological B. chemical C. physical D. none of these
2. All are chemical laboratory techniques and methods, except _____.
A. distillation B. spectrophotometry C. extraction D. filtration
3. Centrifugation process is classified as _____ laboratory technique and method.
A. microbiological B. chemical C. physical D. all of these
4. The technique that separates mixture by passing it in solution or suspension or as a vapor
through a medium in which the components move at different rates.
A. chromatography B. titration C. distillation D. filtration
5. A laboratory technique used to determine the unknown concentration of an identified analyte.
A. distillation B. filtration C. titration D. all of these
II. Modified TRUE or FALSE. On a separate sheet of paper, write TRUE if the underlined word

Brief Introduction
In doing research, a researcher must take note of the different research materials and
procedures. Are you aware of these laboratory techniques and methods? How about the proper
setting and handling of equipment in doing an experiment? Finally, do you know how to write
your research methodology?
The syllabus presented below is just a brief summary of the lessons for the third quarter.
For now at least you have an idea or bird’s eye view of all the lessons to be tackled for this
grading.
Activities
Remember
In doing research, a researcher must be familiar with the research materials and
procedures which include: laboratory techniques and methods, setting and handling
of equipment, and writing the methodology.
The laboratory techniques and methods involved in this module are: microbiological,
chemical, physical, and their ethical issues.
The examples of chemical laboratory techniques are spectrophotometry, extraction,
and titration. While weighing, grinding, drying, centrifugation, distillation, filtration,
chromatography, and pH measurement are examples of physical laboratory
techniques.
Guide Questions:
1. Briefly compare microbiological, chemical, and physical laboratory techniques and methods.
