About this Report
This report assesses the top and emerging IoT technologies across the spectrum of hardware, software, and connectivity and is an update of the previous
IoT technology assessment conducted by the IoT Analytics team in 2019. These market trends and insights are based on the views of IoT Analytics’ research
team, which has benefitted from attending >30 virtual conferences and webinars, >100 individual interviews and discussions, and individual research results
derived from different reports and models. The information in this report is updated as of March 2022.

The purpose of this document is for our readers to broaden their knowledge of the key technologies that will drive IoT forward in the next decade and to
get a high-level overview of these technologies. For ease of understanding, the technologies have been categorized as IoT hardware, IoT software
(middleware, analytics, storage, and platforms), and IoT connectivity.

All discussed insights are centered around IoT-related topics but, in many instances, expand beyond just IoT. The report includes a discussion of selected
current market developments, including market environment and forecasts, vendors, and a prediction on where these technologies will grow moving
forward. The document consists of four parts:
1. Emerging Technologies Radar (Framework and criteria to classify selected technologies and overall view on classifications—6 pages)
2. Software Technologies (Deep dive into selected software technologies and one-pagers on the most interesting technologies—21 pages)
3. Hardware Technologies (Deep dive into selected hardware technologies and one-pagers on the most interesting technologies—29 pages)
4. Connectivity Technologies (Deep dive into selected connectivity technologies and one-pagers on the most interesting technologies—15 pages)
This report is available to IoT Analytics research subscribers only. Please refer to the previous “Emerging Technologies 2019” report for further context.

55+ Emerging IoT Technologies You Should Have on Your Radar (2022)
The 2022 Emerging IoT Technologies Radar
The analyst team at IoT Analytics handpicked 58 of the most promising technologies relevant to IoT projects globally and ranked them according
to their perceived maturity. The radar guides anyone working in IoT-type environments and projects in understanding what technologies they
should be watching, evaluating, and perhaps deploying.
Technologies taking more than a decade to move across the radar
Typical technologies depicted here take roughly 12 years to move from being “far on the horizon” to becoming so mature and widely adopted
that IoT Analytics considers them “mainstream” (in case a technology does become mainstream, which is not always the case). Cloud computing,
for example, took about 12 years from being “far on the horizon” to being considered “mainstream” (Note: AWS was first launched in 2006).
Research on 5G was initiated in 2012 and was considered “far on the horizon” at the time. It has moved to the “nearing maturity” level now and
is expected to hit “mainstream” in the 2024–2025 timeframe (also about 12 years later). One should note that some technologies do mature
quicker than others—research on 6G started in 2019.
