Introduction
Phka Srapon is a popular novel in Cambodia written by Nou Hach. Along with Kolab Pailin and
Sophat, Phka Srapoun is considered one of the three classic novels of modern Khmer
literature.The novel is set during the French colonial period of Cambodia. The story portrays the
Cambodian tradition of arranged marriages.

Author & Published Date

Nou Hach was born on 26 June 1916.He was a Cambodian author. He was born in
Battambang,and died during the Khmer Rouge regime.His father's name was Khuon Nov , and
his mother name was Or Muoch. They were farmers. Hach was the eldest child of the
family.Nou Hach married Tan Rem and had 8 children. Some of his children currently live in
the United States and Australia.His best-known novel is Phkar Srapon that was published in
1949.

Summary of Phka Srapon

Bunthoeun and Vitheavy have been arranged to marry since they were young
unfortunately,Bunthoeun’s family becomes poor after a story sinks the boat that his father uses
to transport the rice in Prey Nokor. Mrs. Noun, a mother of Vitheavy prefers money over honest
and honesty. She drops the engagement between Buntheoun and Vitheavy and engages her
daughter to Naisot. Naisot is bad-tempered and immoral. He uses all his money to do anything
he wants. After becoming engage to Naisot, Vitheavy falls ill. Seeing this, Mrs. Noun brings her
to the resort town of Siem Reap, but Vitheavy’s spirits remain low. One day, Vitheavy caughs
up blood. Her mother being superstitious, brings her to the fortune teller and uses a various
method to try to cure her. However, it does not work. Vitheavy’s illness remains serious. After
Buntheoun discovers that Vitheavy will marry someone else. He becomes sad and cry alone. He
goes into the forest with Mr. So to find firewoods and fish to reduce stress. When he returns
home, Vitheavy dies, this causes him much more grief.

Reflection
Positive point:

Negative points:
_The struggling of Cambodian under the French Colonial
_The Greedy of Mrs,Noun
_believe about something that isn't suitable like the Scene when every bring her to pagoda to
cure her illness.

Conclusion
Phka Srapon is a famous Khmer novel. The story portrays the old mindset in Cambodia that the
children must marry whom ever their parents select.
