Unmattha Bhairava

I salute that mad Bhairava who is the power called Varahi,


Who has three eyes, blesses, is peaceful, young and nude,
Who is white in colour, a great God and rides on a swan,
And holds sword, skull, pestle and shield.

Unmattha Bhairava is the Bhairava Who is Mad. He is white in colour and controls the
negative ego, helps control speech, rules the West, rides a horse and is associated with Saturn
and the Nakshatras Pushya, Anuradha and Uttarabhadrapada. Each of his mansions begin at
3º 20 Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces in the Sidereal Zodiac. His mantra should be repeated 9, 21,
108 or 1008 times, and is as follows:
“Om Hreem Vaaraahi Samethaya Maha Unmattha Bhairavaya Hreem Om Swaaha.”

The eight manifestations of this aspect of Bhairava, with translations of their names, are:

Unmattha – Mad, intoxicated


Vaṭukanāyaka – Lord of Celibates
Śaṅkara – Fearful
Bhūtavetāla – Ghoul, Vampire
Triṇetra – One who guides to Liberation
Tripurāntaka – Destroyer of the Three Cities of the Demons
Varada – Propitious
Parvatāvāsa – Mountain Dweller

His consort is the Matrika Varahi. She helps one overcome Pride and Arrogance, comes in
the form of a woman with a pot belly, full breasts and a sow’s face, or as a boar, and wields a
discus and a sword. She becomes drunk on the blood of her victims and is worshipped by the
left-handed means of meat, wine, fish, alcohol and ritual sex. She resides in the naval and
governs the Manipura, Svadisthana and Muladhara chakras. Her Mantra is
“Om Mahishadhwajayai Vidmahe Dandahastayai Dhimahi Tanno Varahi Prachodayat.”

Prayers to her are the Varahi Anugrahashtakam, for her blessing, and Varahi


Nigrahashtakam, for the destruction of enemies.
Varahi Nigrahashtakam

O goddess, Who is with a very angry face,


Since I have devotion to your lotus like feet
Anyone who thinks of troubling me, by body, words or mind,
Should become extremely sad, beaten by your very dangerous iron plough,
And should become one from whose body the soul starts to depart.
O goddess because I have lost all sins due to devotion to your lotus like feet,
He who observes dirty behaviour towards me due to cruelty
Should fill your drinking goblet by the blood of his heart,
And also please grant me all my desired objectives.

Because of meditating on you, after the great wonderful


Powers which have dawned in me,
I offer at your feet the souls of my evil enemies, which were stolen by me,
By drinking the alcohol of their constant spurt of blood,
Caused by breaking the hearts of my enemies by your fierce and upturned face
Accompanied by horrifying shouts which,
Due to your zest, emanate from you from time to time.
How can the enemies of those extremely devoted to you.
Who is black, who has lotus like feet and face,
Who wears the crescent of the moon,
Who carries with her a plough and an axe
As well the sign of terrorizing fear,
Who carries blood dripping skulls,
And who has the face of a wild boar,
Live for at least a few seconds?
Victory to you, Mother, who is
The darling of the lord of the universe,
Who controls the lives of all beings,
Who also exists as the killer of all beings,
Who controls the span of life of all men
And who grants suitable rewards for actions performed.
I request you, O Goddess, that the life span of my enemies,
Should be as long as I desire, based on your orders.

O mother, as I am a fool, I am not capable of


Properly worshipping you at any time,
Still having received the blessings of my guru,
I pray that anyone who wishes bad things for me,
Should go to hell as he is my enemy,
And also pray that all the fame should come to me,
As I am a great devotee of yours.

O Varahi, I who am devoted to you,


Should see my enemy with a sad mind,
Full of disappointment, very feeble and tired,
Made scared by the servants of god of death,
Full of all miseries and liabilities,
Surrounded by crying relatives,
And only contributing blemishes to his family.

O Varahi, Because of the fact that,


By your own power you have spread yourself,
In all beings and you exist as the form,
Of Soul in all beings and make them throb,
I request a favour from you,
If any one wishes any bad things on me,
Who is the devotee of your lotus like feet,
You should not live within him any further.
Varahi Anugrahashtakam

O Mother, even the great God Easwara,


Who is the director of the drama
Of the creation of Earth, is not able to
Understand your true form,
Becoming a non-Easwara,
And how can anyone be capable to writing a poem in praise of you?

O mother whose face is the entire world,


The one who sings your name,
Will never face punishment,
From the stick of the god of death,
For with very little of that song,
Would he have crossed,
The sea of daily life,
And so this is only in remembrance of your names,
And not a song of praise to you.

O goddess, because of the intensity of my thought on you,


I become inexpressibly happy and I salute you,
My hairs standing on end with happiness.
I entreat and beg of you for this wealth,
So please grant it to me and bless me.

She whose black colour is made dazzling,


By the shining gems in the crowns of
Indra, Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu,
Who are worshipping her lotus feet,
May these always be reflected,
In the recesses of my mind.
O Goddess who destroys all sorrows,
I serve you with all my heart.

You who are blessed with all good things,


Has a boar for your Varaha,
Who playfully lifted the earth,
You have your head decorated by the crescent,
And you are the one who occupied the left side of Lord Shiva.

O mother who has the golden


Shining body of woman up to the neck,
Who has the head of a boar with three eyes,
And who holds in her hand the holy wheel,
The feet of those who are meditating on you,
Would be humbly saluted by all the devas.

O mother, for an ordinary man whose sins,


Have been washed away by serving you,
Even getting salvation, is not that important
For his feet would be worshipped by.
Devas, asuras, nagas and kings,
And anything in this world,
Is easily attained by him.

What is not reachable for him, when he has you in his mind?
What is not available to him, when he worships you?
What is beyond him, when you enter his mind?
Where is the defeat for him who offers a prayer to you?

Kapala Bhairava

I salute the Bhairava of the Skull, who has a yellow body,


Who has three eyes, blesses, peaceful, young and nude,
Who holds a rope, Vajrayudha, Sword and Drinking Goblet,
Who has with him Indrani Shakthi, who is well-praised
and rides an elephant.
Kapala Bhairava is the Bhairava of the Skull, who ends all unrewarding work and action and
is associated with the North West. He is yellow in colour, rides an elephant and is associated
with Venus and the Nakshatras Bharani, Purvaphalguni and Purvashadha, which lie at 13º 20
of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius in the Sidereal Zodiac. His mantra should be repeated 9, 21, 108
or 1008 times, and is as follows:
“Om Hreem Kleem Hreem Kleem Sreem Kleem Sreem Kapaala Bhairavaya Namaha.”

His consort is Indrani, who is also called Shachi, the goddess of beauty, wrath and jealousy.
She is extremely beautiful and youthful in appearance, with full breasts, a slender waist, three
lotus-like eyes and six arms. With her first pair of right and left hands Indrani holds a skull-
cup of blood as she gracefully makes the bindu-kapala-mudra in front her heart. With her
second pair of outstretched right and left hands she holds a vajra and a rope noose, and with
her third pair of hands she wields a sword and a shield. She helps one overcome Jealousy and
Envy and her mantra is “Oṃ Indrāṇyai Namaḥ.”
RURU BHAIRAVA

I salute the Bhairava with the deer,


Who is like pure crystal and a destroyer,
Who has three eyes, blesses, and is peaceful, young and nude,
Who holds a hatchet, a deer, a drinking goblet and a sword in his hands,
Who has the armed Mahesvari by his side who is smiling and rides on a bull.

Ruru Bhairava is the Bhairava who is a Teacher. He is the Divine Educator and can
make people strong, helping them to overcome enemies and hold sway over others.
His colour is pure white and he is adorned with ornaments set with rubies. He carries
an akshamala, an elephant goad, a book and a veena. He rules the South East, rides
an Ox and is associated with the Sun and
the Nakshatras Krittika, Uttaraphalguni and Uttarashadha, which begin at 26º 20 of the
three Fire signs in the Sidereal Zodiac. His mantra should be repeated 9, 21, 108 or
1008 times, and is as follows:
“Om Hreem Shreem Kleem Shreem Shreem Kleem Shreem Sarvaraja
Vasheekaraya Sarva Jana Mohanaya Sarva Vashyam Sheeghram
Sheeghram Shreem Kleem Shreem Swaaha”

Ruru – A dog, deer or other wild creature


Kroḍadaṃṣṭra – The Tusk of a Hog
Jaṭādhara – An Ascetic with Matted Hair
Viśvarūpa – One who Exists in All Forms
Virūpākṣa – Deformed or unusual number of Eyes
Nānārūpadhara – In the form of Gnosis
Vajrahasta – Impenetrable Hand
Mahākāya – Large-bodied

His consort is the Matrika Mahesvari, a manifestation of Parvati and the shakti of


Shiva. She helps one overcome the forces of Degeneration and Dissipation, is
depicted seated on the Bull, Nandi, having two or four hands and three eyes and
holds a trident and a drum in two of her hands, while the other two are held in the
Abhaya and Varada mudras. She is adorned with serpent bracelets, the crescent
moon, a headdress formed of piled, matted hair with a serpent on it and wears a
serpent around her neck. Her mantra is:
“Om Sri Siddha-linga Prasanna Subhamastu Durni mantra-vu Beem Namo
Bhagavatey Maha Pra-laya-kaala Durgi Shakini Brahmhi Maheshvari Sarva Maarita

Asitanga Bhairava

I meditate on the Dark Bhairava who fulfils all desires,


Who is forever, who has three eyes, who blesses and is peaceful,
Who wears a skull garland, is golden, and is the Lord of Mercy,
Who shines in his ear globes, and holds a mace and skull,
Who is young and nude,
And holds an arrow, vessel, conch, bead chain and ear globes,
Who wears a snake as a sacred thread, and is well-ornamented,
Who is with the Goddess Brahmani,
Who rides on a swan and is good to look at.

Asitanga Bhairava is the Bhairava who has Dark Limbs. He has a golden complexion, gives
creative ability, fulfils all desires, removes curses and guards the East. He rides a swan and is
associated with the planet Jupiter and
the Nakshatras Punarvasu, Vishaka and Poorvabhadrapada which begin at 20º Libra,
Aquarius and Gemini in the Sidereal Zodiac. His mantra should be repeated 9, 21, 108 or
1008 times, and is as follows:
“Om Hreem Hraam Hreem Hrum Jam Klaam Kleem Klum Brahmi Devi Samethaya
Asithaanga Bhairavaya Sarva Shaapa Nivarthitaya Om Hreem Phat Swaaha.”

Asitāṅga – Black-limbed
Viśālākṣa – Large-Eyed
Mārtāṇḍa – The Sun
Modakapriya – Lover of Pleasure
Svacchanda – One’s own will
Vighnasantuṣṭa – Satisfactory Removal of Obstacles
Khecara – Moving in the Ether
Sacarācara – Comprehending Everything

His consort is the Matrika Brahmani, who is the shakti of Brahman. She is an aspect of


Sarasvati, is yellow in colour, has four heads, holds a rosary or noose, a water pot, a
lotus stalk, a book, a bell and is either seated on a swan, or is shown seated on a lotus with a
swan on her banner. She wears various ornaments and is distinguished by her basket-shaped
crown called a karaṇḍa mukuṭa. She represents the overcoming of Desire, and her mantra is
“Om Brahmayai Namah.”

Bheeshana Bhairava

I salute the fearful Bhairava,


Who is a great God of blood-red colour,
Who has three eyes, blesses, is peaceful, young and nude,
Who holds a sword, trident, skull and pestle in his hand,
Who has with him Chamunda Shakthi who rides on a corpse.

Bheeshana Bhairava is the Fearful Bhairava. He is red in colour, obliterates all evil spirits
and negativity, is associated with the North and carries a kunda flower, a bludgeon studded
with iron and a javelin. He rides a Lion and is associated with Ketu and the
Nakshatras Ashvini, Magha and Mula, which begin at 0º Aries, Leo and Sagittarius in the
Sidereal Zodiac, and also Rahu and the Nakshatras Ardra, Swati and Shatbhisha, which begin
at 6º 40 Gemini, Libra and Aquarius of the Sidereal Zodiac. His mantra should be repeated 9,
21, 108 or 1008 times, and is as follows:
“Om Hreem Bheeshana Bhairavaya Sarva Saaba Nirvanaya Mam Vasham Kuru Kuru
Svaaha.”

Bheeshana – Horrible
Bhayahara – Terrible
Sarvajña – Omniscient
Kālāgni – Fire that destroys Time
Mahāraudra – Very Dreadful
Dakṣiṇa – Sacred Fire, An Offering
Mukhara – Noisy, A Conch Shell
Asthira – Fickle.

His consort is the Matrika Chamunda, who is also known as Rakta Kali. She represents the
destruction of the ego’s tendency towards doing harm and acting in a depraved manner and
appears as a terrifying old woman. She is invoked to destroy evil and is associated with
cremation grounds and fig trees and can be offered meat, alcohol and animal or human
sacrifices. She is described as wearing a garland of severed heads or skulls. She is described
as having four, eight, ten or twelve arms, holding a drum, trident, sword, snake, skull-mace,
thunderbolt, a severed head and a skull-cup filled with blood. She stands on the corpse of a
man or seated on a defeated demon or corpse. She is adorned by ornaments of bones, skulls,
and serpents and also wears a Yajnopavita of skulls and a headdress formed of piled, matted
hair tied with snakes or skull ornaments. Sometimes, a crescent moon is seen on her head. Her
eye sockets are described as burning the world with flames. She is accompanied by evil
spirits. She is also shown to be surrounded by skeletons or ghosts and beasts like jackals, who
are shown eating the flesh of the corpse which the goddess sits or stands on. The jackals and
her fearsome companions are sometimes depicted as drinking blood from the skull-cup or
blood dripping from the severed head, implying that she drinks the blood of the defeated
enemies. At times, she is depicted seated on an owl and her banner depicts an eagle. Her
mantra is:
“Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Viche.”

This resolves all problems, relaxes the mind, promotes harmonious relationships, eliminates
fear and protects from enemies.

Samhara Bhairava

I meditate on Bhairava the Destroyer, Who is with Chandika Shakthi,


Who has ten hands, three eyes and a snake as a sacred thread,
Who has protruding teeth,
A fearful look and grants eight types of wealth,
Who is nude, a youth and rides on a dog,
Who holds trident, drum, conch, mace and wheel in his hands,
Who holds sword, vessel, Gadwangam, rope and goad.
And who has fearful looks, wears a skull garland and is greatly exuberant.

Samhara Bhairava is Bhairava the Destroyer. He dissolves all negative past karmas, grants
wealth and is associated with the Northeast. He is the colour of lightning, rides a dog and is
associated with Mercury and the Nakshatras Ashlesa, Jyeshtha and Revati, which begin at 16º
40 Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces in the Sidereal Zodiac. His mantra should be repeated 9, 21,
108 or 1008 times, and is as follows:
“Om Namo Bhagavate Samhara Bhairavaye Bhuta Preta Pisaca Brahma Raksasan Uccataya
Samharaya Samharaya Sarva Bhaya Chedanam Kuru Kuru Svaha.”

Saṃhāra – Annihilation
Atiriktāṅga – Having Excessive Limbs
Kālāgni – The Fire that Destroys Time
Priyaṅkara – Attracting Love or Regard
Ghoranāda – Bellowing
Viśālākṣa – Large-Eyed
Yogīśa – Lord of Union
Dakṣasaṃsthita – Stilling the Mind

His consort is the Matrika Chandika, a powerful, terrifying goddess who is a form of Durga
and represents the manifestation of all divine power. She hates evildoers and becomes
wrathful on seeing them. She comes in the form of a woman seated on a lotus with a
vermilion and coral complexion and eighteen arms bearing a string of beads, a battle axe, a
mace, an arrow, a thunderbolt, a lotus, a bow, a water-pot, a cudgel, a lance, a sword, a shield,
a conch, a bell, a wine-cup, a trident, a noose and a discus. She assists with the overcoming of
Anger, and her mantra is:
“Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Viche.”

This resolves all problems, relaxes the mind, promotes harmonious relationships, eliminates
fear and protects from enemies.

Krodha Bhairava

I salute the Angry Bhairava,


Who is the colour of smoke and a great God,
Who has three eyes, blesses, is peaceful, young and nude,
Who is armed with mace, conch, wheel, rope and vessel,
Who is near Goddess Lakshmi riding on Garuda the eagle.

Krodha Bhairava is the Bhairava who is Angry. He is he colour of smoke and has the power
to aid one take huge and decisive action, rules the South West, rides an Eagle and is
associated with Luna and the Nakshatras Rohini, Hasta and Shravana, which begin at 10º of
the three Earth signs in the Sidereal Zodiac. His mantra should be repeated 9, 21, 108 or 1008
times, and is as follows:
“Om Namah Krodhabhairavaya Om Hreem Namo Bhagavathe Ugraroophaaya Jwala Jwala
Hoom Phat Swaahaa.”
This prevents unnecessary arguments, destroys the evil eye, promotes safe journeys and
prevents accidents. His Mudra, the Krodhana Mudra, is used to manage emotions and can be
practiced with the face contorted in an expression of anger which is then released to loosen
the muscles. It is used to manifest raw emotion and manifest it into the self, as seen in the
Vajnabhairava Initiation:

“I chortle HA-HA with my tongue curled upwards, my fangs bared, my mouth and brow
wrinkled in anger, my eyelashes, eyebrows, moustache and body-hair ablaze like the Eon of
Destruction and my orange hair bristling upward. I make threatening mudras at both the
worldly and transcendental gods, frightening even the frightful ones, and thunder the sound
PHEM like a dragon.”

Krodha – Wrathful
Piṅgalekṣaṇa – Red-eyed
Abhrarūpa – Ugly, deformed
Dharāpāla – Guardian of the Earth
Kuṭila – Crooked
Mantranāyaka – Lord of Mantras
Rudra – Dreadful
Pitāmaha – Grandfather

His consort is the Matrika Lakshmi or Vaishnavi. She helps one overcome Delusion and is
depicted seated on the Eagle Garuda and also has the power to fascinate and delude. She is
seated upon a lotus, under a Raja-vriksha, the great tree. She is dark in complexion.,  has a
lovely face, pretty eyes and wears a bright yellow garment. Her head is adorned with a kirita-
makuta. She is richly decorated with ornaments generally worn by Vishnu, including the
Vanamala garland.  When depicted with four arms, she carries in one of her hands
the chakra and in the corresponding left hand the shankha; her two other hands are held in the
Abhaya and the Varada mudra. Her mantra is “Oṃ Vaiṣṇavyai Namaha.”
Chanda Bhairava

I salute the Fierce Bhairava who is blue in colour,


Who has three eyes, blesses, is peaceful, young and nude,
Who holds rope, Vajrayudha, Sword and Drinking Goblet,
Who has with him Kaumari Shakthi and rides on a peacock.

Chanda Bhairava is the Fierce Bhairava. He is blue in colour and improves self-confidence,


destroys the envy of others, gives energy, cuts the competition of rivals, helps with the
performance of duties and prevents one falling prey to illicit influences. He holds fire, a spear,
a mace, and a kunda flower in his hands. He is the guardian of the South and is associated
with the Nakshatras Mrigshisha, Chitra and Dhanishtha, which are situated at 23º 20’ of
Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn in the Sidereal Zodiac. His mantra is:
“Om Hreem Chanda Bhairava Sarva Chatru Naasaya Sthaabhaya Uchchaadhaaya Hoom Phat
Swaahaa.”
This should be chanted a minimum of nine times, but ideally 108 or 1,008 times. Repeating it
1,008 times for 22 days grants one its Siddhis.

Chanda – Fierce
Pralayāntaka – Cataclysm, Deluge.
Bhūmikampa – Earthquake
Nīlakaṇṭha – Blue-throated
Viṣṇu – All-Prevailing Lord
Kulapālaka – Clan Guardian
Muṇḍapāla – Tribe Protector
Kāmapāla – Fulfiller of Desires

His consort is the warrior goddess Kaumari, who rides a peacock and has four or twelve
arms. Her colour is red and she holds a spear, axe, scimitar, trident, bow, arrow, sword, shield,
mace, lotus, longsword, discus and conch shell. She represents overcoming the ego’s urge
towards callow enjoyment and can assist in the pacification of bad temper. Her mantra is:
“Om Sikid Vajaaya Vidmahe Vajra Hasthaya Dhimahe Tanno Kaumari Prachodayat.”
There are 8 types of Kaal Bhairavas and they are known as Ashta
Bhairavas. They are the Asithanga Bhairavar, Chanda Bhairavar,
Kapala Bhairavar, Krodha Bhairavar, Unmatta Bhairavar,
Bhishana Bhairavar, Ruru Bhairavar and Samhara Bhairavar.
Apart from these 8 forms or Ashta Bhairavas, there is an
important form of Kaal Bhairav knowns as the Swarna Akarshana
Bhairava.
Kaala Bhairava - The Dark, Terrible Aspect of Shiva

Prachodhayaath"

The above is the Gayatri Mantra of Lord Bhairava, also commonly referred to as Kaala Bhairava,
who is a frightful aspect of Maheshwara (Shiva).

Trinity - Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva

The Trinity of Hindu Gods, that is, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, are associated with Creation,
Preservation and Destruction, respectively. Bhairava, the rather fierce manifestation of Lord
Shiva, is commonly associated with this aspect of annihilation. Originating in ancient Hindu
legends, the much-feared form of Bhairava is revered by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists alike. He
is also worshipped in this form throughout India and Nepal.

Bhairava is a wandering form of Shiva. There are 64 Bhairavas in all. These Bhairavas come
under 8 categories. Each of these categories is headed by one major Bhairava in that particular
group. The leader Bhairavas are referred to as Ashtanga Bhairavas. These 8 Bhairavas, who
guard and control the 8 directions of the universe, are as follows:

 Asithaanga Bhairava
 Ruru Bhairava
 Chanda Bhairava
 Krodha Bhairava
 Unmattha Bhairava
 Kapaala Bhairava
 Bheeshana Bhairava
 Samhaara Bhairava

All these Bhairavas are controlled by Maha Swarna Kala Bhairava, also known as Kaala Bhairava.
He is the Supreme Godhead and the ruler of the rest of the Bhairavas. Kaala Bhairava's consort
is Bhairavi, the terrible aspect of Parvati, or Kali.
This frightful aspect of the Lord is predominantly worshipped by the Aghora sect. Residents of
Kashmir, who have their origin from Gorat, worship Bhairava during the festival of Shivaratri.

Origin of the Name Bhairava

While the name itself may translate into "terrible" and "fearful", the actual interpretation is
quite different. It means he is the Lord who protects his devotees from external enemies; as
also from internal enemies such as greed, lust, anger and all other negative emotions.

There is yet another interpretation of the name "Bhairava". "Bha" stands for creation, "Ra" for
preservation and "Va" for destruction. Bhairava, thus, is believed to be the Ultimate Godhead,
combines all of these forces of the Universe.

Legends Surrounding Bhairava

There are several legends surrounding Bhairava, the Dark and Frightful Aspect of Shiva.
According to the most popular legend, which features in the Shiva Mahapurana, there was once
a debate between Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Vishnu asked Brahma who the Supreme Creator of
the Universe was. Brahma became a little egoistic, as he was always celebrated as the Creator.
Furthermore, he thought that since he too had 5 heads like Shiva, he could achieve anything
that Shiva could. He then began to forge the work of Shiva and started interfering with Shiva's
daily duties.
Bhairava

Shiva observed all this patiently for some time. Later, when he could take it no more, he
removed a small nail from his finger and threw it. This nail assumed the form of Kaala
Bhairava. The manifestation headed straight for Brahma and chopped one of his heads off.
Bhairava is always shown holding the skull of Brahma in his hands.

Bhairava's action completely subdued and humbled Brahma; destroying his ego and bestowing
instant enlightenment upon him. He was deeply grateful to Bhairava and, prostrating before
him, promised to work only for the benefit of the Universe, from then on.

Goddess Kali

According to another legend, Shiva himself created Bhairava. There was a terrible demon
named Dahurasuran. After severe penance, he got a boon that he could be killed only by a
woman. Parvati then took the form of Kali to slay him. After fulfilling her mission, her wrath
took the form of a child. Kali fed her child with her milk. Seeing all this, Shiva emerged there
and made both Kali and the child to merge into him. From this form of Bhairava, Shiva
appeared in all his eight manifestations of Ashtanga Bhairavas. Since Shiva gave rise to
Bhairava, the latter is sometimes referred to as his son.

The Puranas give yet another version of Bhairava's origin. According to this legend, there was
once a war between Gods and demons. In order to destroy all the demons, Shiva created Kaala
Bhairava. The Ashtanga Bhairavas who were created from him eventually went on to marry the
Ashta Matrikas. All these manifestations have terrible forms. From the Ashtanga Bhairavas and
Ashta Matrikas were created the 64 Bhairavas and 64 Yoginis.

Brahma

A modified version of the original legend goes as follows. When Brahma insulted Shiva, the
latter took the form of the angry Bhairava. He jumped out from Shiva's Third Eye and severed
Brahma's head. Brahma's head then got stuck to Bhairava's left palm. This was Bhairava's
punishment for severing the most sacred and learned Brahmin's head. In order to atone for the
greatest sin of Brahmahatya, Bhairava took a vow to wander around as a naked beggar, with
the skull as his begging bowl. He is finally liberated of his sin when he reaches the holy city of
Varanasi. There is still a temple dedicated to Bhairava's worship in this city.

Iconography

Usually, one can easily find Bhairava idols in all Shiva temples. These idols are located in the
north-facing and south-facing directions. Bhairava is generally depicted in a standing position,
with four hands. He holds a drum, a paasa (noose), trident and skull. Some forms of Bhairava
depict more than four hands. He is normally shown as digambara (without clothing -
encompassing the entire space within himself).
Bhairava Statue

Bhairava's vahana (vehicle) is Shwaswa, the dog. This animal appears terrifying too, with
protruding teeth and a menacing expression. Feeding and caring for dogs is considered to be an
apt way of showing one's devotion and dedication to Lord Kaala Bhairava.

He is also portrayed as being ornamented with several twisted serpents, which serve as his
earrings, bracelets, necklaces, anklets, armlets and yagnopavita (sacred thread). He wears
tiger skin around his waist and a sort of apron, made of human bones.

Bhairava - The Guardian

Shaivites consider Bhairava to be the Protector, as he guards the 8 directions. He is also


regarded as the protector of women (especially those who are timid in nature). All Shiva
temples have a Bhairava idol. The keys to the temple are placed before this deity, as it is
believed that he will protect the premises even when the temple is closed for the day - this is
why he is also referred to as Kshetrapalaka or the Guardian of the Temple.

This avatar of the Lord is also venerated as the Guardian of Travelers. He is believed to guard
all those who take his name during long-distance travel - he especially protects those who
undertake travel at night. To attain his grace, it is prescribed that you should create a garland
of cashew nuts and offer it to his idol. You should also light a lamp and sincerely pray to him
for protection during your travel.

Kaala Bhairava is considered to be the Guru of Shani (planet Saturn). Also referred to as
Bhairavar or Vairavar (in Tamil Nadu), he is often portrayed as a Grama Devata or Village
Guardian, who safeguards both the village and its residents from threat that could arise from
any of the eight directions. He is also venerated by the residents of Sri Lanka. In Singhalese, he
is referred to as Bahirawa. There too, he is venerated as the Guardian of Treasures.

It is believed that worshipping Bhairava gives the devotee peace, prosperity, success and
progeny. The powerful God is also believed to protect his devotees from premature death,
sadness, tragedy and debt.

Worship of Bhairava

One can find temples or shrines dedicated to Bhairava, near most of the Jyotirlinga temples.
These are the twelve most sacred shrines dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. These
temples are scattered all over India, including the Kaal Bhairav Temple at Ujjain, the Kasi
Vishwanath Temple at Varanasi and the Patal Bhairav and Vikrant Bhairav shrines at Ujjain.

In all Shiva temples, daily puja rituals begin with offering worship to Surya or the Sun God. It
then ends with worshipping Bhairava. Bhairava is offered a ghee abhishek (holy bath ritual),
ghee lamps, red flowers, whole coconuts, honey, boiled food, fruits and eight types of flowers
and leaves.

A Bhairava idol facing west is a good sign. If it is facing south, it is moderate. A Bhairava facing
east is not considered to be appropriate. Also, the best time to offer prayers to this Lord is at
midnight; especially on Friday night. It is believed that, at this time, he and his consort
Bhairavi will shower grace on their devotees and grant them their darshan as well.

It is believed that the five of the eight Bhairavas represent the five elements of air, fire,
water, earth and ether. The three others are the sun, moon and the atman (consciousness).
Each of these eight manifestations is different in appearance and wields different weapons,
have different vahanas (vehicles) and bless their devotees with eight different types of wealth,
represent the Ashta Lakshmis. The mantra to invoke each of these manifestations is also
different.
Bhariava Upasana

Bhairava is considered to be the ultimate form for attaining liberation. He is the One that
grants the awareness of pure consciousness. This form is called the Svarpaakarsna Bhairava. He
is depicted as a glowing red in complexion and drapes a golden dress around himself. Holding
the moon in his head, he has four hands. He is the giver of wealth and prosperity. Followers
believe that praying to this form on Tuesdays, grants them immediate and effective results.

Some texts describe him as having thirty-two hands, golden complexion, terrible teeth and the
shape of a bird. He is shown having a human form above the hip. It is said that worshipping him
helps his devotees destroy their enemies.

Bhairava Ashtami

Bhairava Ashtami, also called Kaalaashtami, Kaala Bhairava Ashtami, Kaala Bhairava Jayanti,
Bhairavashtami and Bhairava Jayanti, is a sacred day, commemorating the birth of Lord
Bhairava. This event falls on the eight lunar day in the Krishna Paksha (fortnight of the waning
moon) of the Hindu month of Kartik (November-December).
Bhariava as Dandapani

During this period, the Lord, in the form of Dandapani, rides on his dog. He is called
Dandapani, as he wields a Danda or rod, to punish sinners.

Devotees keep an all-night vigil on the night of Bhairava Ashtami, praying and singing the
praises of their Lord. An elaborate midnight arati is performed with devotees blowing conches,
playing drums and cymbals. After a bath the next morning, devotees offer obeisance to their
deceased kin. Then Bhairava is worshipped along with Bhairavi and his Dog. Followers offer
flowers, milk, curds and sweets to the idols. This day is considered even more sacred if it falls
on a Sunday or a Tuesday.

This day is celebrated with great fervor at the Bhairav Prasad temple in the Vaishno Devi hills
in Kashmir. An idol of the Lord is made in silver or gold and is immersed in a brass metal pot,
filled with water. Then priests offer pujas and prayers, before distributing prasad to all
gathered there.

In Varanasi, devotees undertake an eight-day pilgrimage to the eight temple of Ashta Bhairava.
This journey is undertaken on the first eight days of the fortnight, ending with the Bhairava
Ashtami. The deity is generally covered with a cloth (with only the face showing) the whole
year round. But on this day, the cloth is removed to reveal the entire idol. His image is
decorated with a garland of silver skulls. Devotees throng the temple in order to catch a
glimpse of the powerful God.
Bhairava Temples

In the Indian state of Karnataka, Lord Kaalabhairaveshwara is revered as the Kshetrapalaka of


the Sri Adichunchanagiri Math. The Gowdas of this region adore him as the Supreme Godhead.
Those belonging to the Gangadikara Gowda caste consider him as the caretaker and punisher.

The Sri Kaala Bhairava Nath Swami temple in Madhya Pradesh is yet another famous temple
dedicated to the worship of this manifestation of Shiva.

Bhairava is one of the most important deities of the Newars in Nepal. Most settlements there
have at least one temple of the Lord. Also, the Bhairava temples in that country are mostly
maintained by Newar priests.

Kaala Bhairava and the Shakti Peethas

Temples of Kaala Bhairava can be predominantly found around the Shakti Peethas. It is
believed that Shiva allocated each Bhairava to guard one of the 52 Shakti Peethas. The Shakti
Peethas are holy places of worship, dedicated to Goddess Shakti, the main female deity of
Hinduism and the principal deity of the Shaktya sect. Goddess Shakti is often associated with
harmony, peace, prosperity, longevity, strength, marital felicity and destruction of evil.

The 52 Shakti Peethas can be found scattered all over the Indian subcontinent. According to
legend, during the Satya Yuga, King Daksha (the son of Lord Brahma) performed a Vrihaspati
yagna, with intent to take revenge on Lord Shiva. His most favorite daughter, Sati, had fallen
in love with Shiva and had married him against his wishes. He was a staunch Vaishnavite
(follower of Vishnu) and detested Shiva. He had tried everything to stop Sati from marrying
Shiva, but had failed miserably.

Daksha invited all the deities to the yagna, but decided to ignore Sati and Shiva. Though Sati
was upset at not being invited for the event, she wanted to attend it, as it was her family
function. When she expressed her desire to Shiva, he tried his best to dissuade her from going
there. However, she was insistent that she wanted to attend the yagna. Shiva eventually
relented and acceded to her request. Sati left for her parental home, escorted by Shiva's
ganas.

When Sati reached the site of the yagna, Daksha refused to even acknowledge her and insulted
her and Shiva. Unable to bear her father's insulting words against her husband, she committed
suicide by jumping into the sacrificial fire. When Shiva came to know about this, he was
furious. He, along with his ganas, went to the site of the yagna and completely destroyed it. He
then cut off the head of the arrogant Daksha.

Still in a state of uncontrollable grief and fury, Shiva carried the corpse of Sati on his shoulder
and performed his terrible Tandava dance. Unable to stand the extent of his fury, the three
worlds went into a state of turmoil. The Gods went to Vishnu, beseeching him to somehow
control Shiva's anger.

Vishnu appeared before Shiva, took Sati's lifeless body and severed it into many pieces, with
the help of his Sudarshana Chakra (Discus). The pieces of her body fell at various places
throughout India. They then came to be known as the sacred Shakti Peethas.

In each of the Shakti Peethas, both the presiding Goddess and the Bhairava guarding her
temple are given a particular name.

Bhairava and Bhairavi in Tantra

Bhairava encompasses the entire universe within himself; all the Shaktis seamlessly merging
into him; becoming one with him. In Tantra, Bhairava is both an aspect of Shiva and a
supremely divine mantra, capable of transporting the seeker into the highest realms of
consciousness.

The Vijnana-Bhairava is one of the most important tantric treatises. Similarly, the
Bhairavamudra is one of the most crucial mudras (gestures) in tantra. This mudra, which is
complicated and is a difficult state to achieve, is revealed only to a few sadhaks.
When Shiva completely withdraws into himself and immerses himself in his own consciousness,
he rises in the awareness of being one with Kali. Thus emerges the form of Bhairava, the
masculine aspect of Kali herself, who manifests as Bhairavi. This union of the potent male and
female energies in the universe lacks any intrinsic qualities - it is pure, effulgent light.
The thing to note here is that the dark, evil-looking intensity depicted in the forms of Bhairava
and Bhairavi do not actually imply evil intent. The very nature of Bhairava is to look inward and
not outward.

Shiva, in his state of intense meditation, goes on an inward journey; eventually experiencing
his existence within the womb of Kali, who manifests as Bhairavi. From this dark abyss arises
the terrible form of Bhairava. Similarly, the Bhairava-Bhairavi union aims to educate the seeker
to defy the dark forces of evil, ignorance and violence; journey into himself; understand that
he comes from within the womb of the Universal Mother, Kali; then finally transform himself to
emerge as powerful pure energy, which can help serve humanity in ways he could otherwise
not even imagine possible.

Seen from this perspective, Bhairava or Mahakala is a tantric deity, which symbolizes an
internalizing, holistic, healing force, which helps a sadhak towards self-fulfillment and
actualization of desires. The energy of Bhairava emerges as a driving force, which overcomes
every obstacle to achieve all that it seeks. It is therefore seen as "destructive" - that which
destroys everything which comes in the way of its own fulfillment.

Kaalabhairava Ashtakam

Kaalabhairava Ashtakam is a beautiful Sanskrit hymn, composed by Adi Shankara. It comprises


eight stanzas; which are typical of any Ashtakam. The hymn depicts the qualities of Kaala
Bhairava of Kashi, the God of Death.

This Bhairava is described as being black; without clothing; terrible-looking with protruding
fangs; ornamented with entwined snakes and a garland of skulls; holding weapons in each of his
four hands; and bells attached to his waist-band.
The Ashtakam further goes on to describe how his frightful laughter shakes the entire creation;
how he controls all the ghosts, ghouls and goblins; and how his fierce Tandava dance
annihilates the evil; while also bestowing liberation upon devout souls.
Summary of the Kaalabhairava Ashtakam

1. The first stanza of the Kaalabhairava Ashtakam offers salutations to the Supreme Lord.
Indra sits at his Lotus feet and serves him. Bhairava, who is venerated by Sage Narada
and all the Yogis and Yogins of the world, is the King of the Devas. He adorns himself
with snakes and the beautiful moon sits on his head. He appears in the form of a
Digambara and is extremely kind and compassionate.
2. The second stanza offers salutations to the Supreme Ruler of Kashi, who is as
brilliant as a million Suns. He, who is blue-throated and three-eyed, rescues his
devotees from the bhavasagara (the ocean of worldly misery) and showers peace and
prosperity upon them. He, the Imperishable One, supports the three worlds, which
rotate around him.
3. The third stanza describes Bhairava as the Punisher of Evil. He holds a noose, club
and spear in his hands. He is the Primordial Lord, whose body is dark and fearful. He is
beyond disease and death.
4. The fourth stanza relates that he is the giver of all prosperity and lovingly liberates
his devotees from worldly miseries and sins.
5. The fifth stanza offers salutations to Bhairava, who is ornamented with golden
snakes and guards Dharma (righteousness), also leading his devotees toward the right
path. He thus frees them from the unending cycle of Karma and eternal rebirth.
6. The sixth stanza relates how his Lotus feet are decked with sandals, studded with
precious gems. He is the Eternal One and liberates his devotees from the fear of death.
7. The seventh stanza describes how Bhairava's terrible laughter makes the whole world
tremble in fear. He is All-Powerful and bestows the eight Siddhis (powers) to sincere
seekers. He wears a garland of skulls and, along with his consort, Maha Kalika, destroys
the darkness of evil and sin.
8. The eighth and final stanza talks about Bhairava, the Lord of the Universe, as the
ruler of ghosts and spirits. He showers happiness, peace, prosperity and glory on his
devotees; also liberating the residents of Kasi from their sins; ever guiding them along
the path of Dharma.

   (Bhairava  is considered   as an incarnation of Lord Shiva by some people and as  an


assistant to Lord Shiva  by I others. There is a  legend that he was created  by Lord Shiva to
pinch off  one head of Lord Brahma  when due to pride  Brahma  misbehaved with him. He is
considered as the chief of security of the   town of Varanasi  (kotwal)    and Adhi Sankara 
has written a mellifluous  prayer addressed   to Kala Bhairava in Varanasi  . But Bhairava  is
also worshipped by Thanthrics    of  Hindu and Buddhist religions.  There is a temple
dedicated to Swarna Akarshana Bhairava  in Dindukal   city of Tamil Nadu .Unlike other  
forms of Bhairava  , swarnakarshana  Bhairava   has a pleasand look    and   sits  along with
his consort. It is believed that  by worshipping him  , you would become wealthy . IN this
translation , I have given the Swarna Akarshana  Manthra  in the beginning    and the prayer

Namasthe swarna roopaya   , suvarnaya namo nama

19.Salutations to him who is the form of Manthra , Salutations to him who gives forms to
Manthra,
Salutations to one who has   form of gold , salutations to one who is of golden co;lour.
20.Nama suvarna varnaya  , maha punyaya they nama  ,
Nama  shudhaya budhaya   , nama samsara  tharine.

20.Salutations to god with golden colour  , Salutations to you who has done blessed deeds,
Salutations to the clean and wise  one, Salutations to one   who makes  us cross  Samsara

21,Namo devaya   guhyaya   prachalaya  namo nama ,


Namasthe  bala roopaya   paresham   bala   nasine

21,Salutations  to the God who  is secret, salutations to one who shakes,


Salutations to one   who has the form of a child and to him who destroys   strength of others.

Nama  Pathala vasaya  , anadharaya   they nama

22.Salutations to the agent of gld  , Salutations to one   who lives in earth,


SAluataions to one who lives in Patala(nether world)  , Salutations to the indifferent one

23.Namo namasthe santhaya, ananthaya they namo nama ,


Dwibujaya   namasthubhyam  , buja thraya   sushobhine

23.Salutations to the peaceful one  , salutations to the endless one  ,


Salutations to the two armed one   and to him who shines with three arms.

24.Namanamadhi   sidhaya  , swarna hasthatya  they nama,


Poorna Chandra pratheekasa , vadanamboja shobhine.

24,Salutations to  the primeval sidha  , and to one   who has a golden hands,
And to one who resembles   the full moon and whose face shines like lotus   flower.

25.Namosthesthu swaroopaya  , swarnalankara   shobhine  ,


Nama swarnakarshanaya  , swarnabhaya  namo nama.

25,Salutations to one who has his own form who shines with decorations with gold,
Salutations to one   who attracts gold  , Salutations who looks glamorous in gold.

26.Namasthe  swarna kantaya  , swarnabha  ambara   dharine  ,


Swarna simhasanasthaya  , SWarna  padaya   they nama

26.Salutations to one with golden neck  , and one who wears golden colour cloth,
Salutations to God who sits on golden throne   and who has a  golden feet.

27.Namo  SWarrnabha padaya  , swarna kanchi sushobine,


Namasthe   swarna jangaya   BHaktha kamadudhatmane.

27.Salutations to one whose feet shines like Gold  ,and who shines  in golden belt,
Salutations to one having a golden thigh   and one who fulfills desires   of his devotees.

28.Namasthe  swarna bhakthaya , kalpa vruksha   swaroopine  ,


Chinthamani swaroopaya , namo  brahmadhi sevine.

28.Salutations to the devotee of gols   who has the form of wish giving tree ,
Salutations   to one  who is like wish giving gem   , who is served  by Brahma   and others.

29.Kalpa drumadhya   samsthaya   bahu swarna pradhayine,


Namo Hemakrshanaya  , bhairavaya  namo nama.

29.Oh Lord who gives   lots of Gold   like the  wish fulfilling Kalpaga  tree  ,
Salutations to one who is attracted by gold  and to Lord  Bhairava.

30.Sthavenanena   santhushto   bhava  ,lokesa  Bhairava  ,


Pasya maam karuna drushtyaa   saranagatha  vathsala.

30 Oh Lord of the world Bhairava  , become pleased  with this prayer ,


Ands look at me   with mercy oh Lord who loves  those who surrender  to him.

31. Sri Maha bhairavasya   idham  stotra muktham    sudurlabham,


Manthrathmakam   maha punyam   , sarvaiswarya  pradhayakam.

32.This pearl of prayer   addressed to great Bhairava is difficult to get  ,


The soul of the manthra would lead to blessed deeds and  would  get all sorts of wealth.

33. Ya paden nithyam   yekagram     pathakai   pramuchyathe  ,


Labhathe mahathim lakshmim  ashtaisvaryamapnuyath.

33,If this is read daily with concentration , you would escape from evil deeds,
And   e you would get  great wealth   and the eight types of wealth would be earned by him.

34.Chinthamanim avapnothi   , dhenu  kalpa tharum druvam,


Swarna rasim   avapnothi   seegrameva na samsaya

34.He would make the wish giving gem , cow and Kalpaga tree   his own without doubt,
He  would get    without any doubt quickly    heaps of gold.

35.Tri sandhyam ya padeth stotram   dasavruthya  narothama  ,


SWapne   sri Bhairava  thasya sakshath bhoothvaa   jagadguru.
35. To the who reads this ten times daily at dawn, noon and dusk,
Would be able    to see  Bhairava  , the  motherly teacher  of the  world in his dream.

36.Swarna rasi  dadath   thasyai   thath kshanam   nathra   samsaya,,


Ashta vruthya   padeth yasthu   sandhyayaym   va narothamam.

36.He would give    those great men who read it eight  times,
At dawn, noon and dusk  without    any doubt  heaps  of gold.

37.Labhathe sakalaan kamaan   sapthahaan na samsaya,


SArvadha ya padeth stotram   bhairavasya   mahathmana,

37.To him who reads   it , always   the great Bhairava ,


Would fulfill all their  desires within a week  without any doubt.

38.Mriyathe sathrava  thasya   alakshmi  naasam aapnuyath,


Akshayam labhathe   saukhyam   sarvadaa  manavothama.

38.  The enemies will die   and absence of auspiciousness  will perish  ,
And  non ceasing   happiness would be that of the    great human beings.

39.Ashta   panchath   varnadyo   manthra raja prakeerthaha,


Daridrya   dukh samana   swarnakarshana karaka

39.Those who sing this  king of manthras   fifty eight times  ,


Would get   their  poverty and sorrow destroyed   by the one  who attracts  gold.

40. Ya yena   sanchayeth  dheeman    stotram  prapadeth sadaa ,


Maha Bhairava sayujyam,   sa anantha kale   labeth druvam.

40.If   the great one   after repeatedly reading the stotra   accumulates it,
He would go the presence of great Bhairava  at the end of his life definitely.
