Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion Gets the Touching

Tribute It Deserves

Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion is something of an modernist icon

in the architecture world. Originally designed for the 1929 World Fair in
Barcelona as the German Pavilion, the structure is built from glass, steel,
marble, and other extravagant materials, including red onyx and travertine.
The building was disassembled following the closure of the exhibition in
1930, but it quickly became an important reference point in both van der
Rohe's career and the modern architecture movement as a whole. In 1980,
Barcelona city officials hired architects to research, design, and reconstruct
the pavilion using the same materials and precision employed by van der
Rohe.
Following the reconstruction, the Mies van der Rohe Foundation has
invited artists and architects to temporarily work with the space to create
installations and alterations, which the foundation calls "interventions."
Past interventions have been created by such notable names as Ai Weiwei,
Kazuyo Sejima, and Andrés Jaque. The structure is an endless source of
inspiration and an important modernist monument that continues to teach
new generations about the movement's principles. A Spanish architect and
audiovisual creator named Fernando Ayuso has created a touching tribute
to the pavilion in a video titled "Reflections," which features audio of Mies
speaking about his work mixed with scenic shots of the structure.
