What will education be like in the future?

Education is constantly changing. The learning
process is not what it used to be before the digital
revolution. Technology has created the opportunity
to access information instantly – something which
simply wasn’t possible in the past. Students can
benefit from using the internet to look up information
using a variety of different devices: phones, tablets,
laptops and desktop computers. There are many
online courses now that students can do for free
and obtain a qualification. This means that
education is now available anywhere at any time. In
the past, students had to go to colleges to do
courses and to the library to search for information.
In the future, students will be able to do most
courses online. By 2050, technology will have
advanced even further. At school and at university,
devices will be providing students with virtual places
where they can learn. There will be simulated
environments for History and Geography students
where they can experience different places and

with students participating in tasks and assignments
set for them with the teachers in the background if
help is needed.

The importance of working together is going to
increase as the contact students have with each
other allows the exchange of experience and
knowledge. To learn about any subject, students will
be able to watch (and re-watch) lectures online and
then ask questions later through a forum or by
emailing the teacher. Courses will be designed to
be both motivating and challenging to keep students
stimulated. Of course, one disadvantage of online
learning often mentioned is the isolation and lack of
face-to-face contact. This can be overcome to a
certain extent by video calls.

Today’s students have been brought up in the age
of technology. These ‘digital natives’ use devices in
their daily life for communication and fun. Education
will become a part of this by encouraging learning
through social media and online games. In addition,
the learning process will become tailored to the
individual’s needs and interests. Different learners
have different learning styles: some prefer visual
learning, others learn best through listening or
writing and others still may learn through movement
or touch. Writers of online courses will concentrate
on developing flexible courses that take into
account different learning styles. In the future it is
quite possible that whole courses will be designed
based on an individual’s learning style.
