Debate - Globalization

Definition: Globalization refers to the process of increasing interconnectedness and

interdependence between countries, economies, societies, and cultures around the world. It
is driven by advancements in technology, transportation, and communication, which have
made it easier for people, goods, and ideas to move across borders.

Arguments for:
● Improvements in quality of life - Globalization has allowed people around the world
to share information, ideas and cultures. This can lead to greater understanding
between people, as well as advancements in areas, such as healthcare, education
and social quality.

● Technological advancements - Globalization has allowed companies to share

information and technology worldwide, resulting in significant advancements in areas
such as medicine, communications and energy.

● Poverty reduction - Globalization has helped to reduce poverty in many developing

countries by providing employment and investment.

● Economic growth - Globalization has been associated with increased international

trade and investment, which can lead to faster economic growth. This can result in
more jobs, increased productivity and greater opportunities for countries to develop.

● Increased access to goods and services - Globalization allows companies to

produce on a global scale and distribute their products worldwide. This results in
greater access to a variety of goods and services for consumers around the world. If
you’re buying a product that comes from abroad, you’re benefiting from globalization
to some point.

● Increase of cultural awareness - It has enabled people to learn about and

appreciate different cultures, attitudes and values of other people from other
countries, leading to increased understanding and the end of xenophobia.

● I believe that in the end, all of the reasons why globalization can be … to anyone are
interconnected. For example, by having access to a bigger market from a foreign
country, business owners benefit from globalization. Then the access to goods and
services is increased, consequently there is an economic growth, by using those
products to a new business and there is an improvement in quality of life. So, from
my point of view, I can see more benefits than consequences about globalization.

In terms of political:
● Increased cooperation - Globalization has facilitated increased cooperation
between nations and governments. This is seen in the formation of international
organizations such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and the
International Criminal Court, which serve to promote peace, trade, and justice among
nations.
● Greater democracy - Globalization has provided a platform for promoting
democracy and human rights. As nations become more connected, they are more
likely to adopt democratic principles and respect human rights as they interact with
other nations that adhere to these values.

● Improved diplomacy - Globalization has led to increased diplomacy between

nations, with diplomatic relations between countries being strengthened as they
interact more frequently. Diplomacy provides an opportunity for nations to negotiate
peacefully and resolve conflicts without resorting to war.

● Increased global security - Globalization has led to increased global security

through the sharing of intelligence and cooperation in combating terrorism and other
security threats. This is seen in the formation of organizations such as Interpol and
the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, which work to combat crime and
terrorism.

● Overall, globalization has the potential to promote cooperation, democracy,

diplomacy, global security, and economic stability, which are all essential components
of a healthy and stable political environment.

Arguments against:
● Loss of jobs - It is true that it can happen, but it’s also true that it can be just
temporary. I believe that if losing a job because of globalization isn’t

● Rich become richer, poor become poorer

○ Answer - The truth is that the argument that globalization contributes to
poverty reduction is somehow controversial, because the majority of people’s
opinions differ as to the quantity and quality of the jobs created by
globalization. However, it is believed it has increased job opportunities.
(Globalization has helped to reduce poverty in many developing countries by
providing employment and investment)
● Unequal distribution of benefits - benefits of global trade are not evenly
distributed, and the gains are concentrated in the hands of a small elite, while the
rest of society is left behind.
○ Answer - I believe that, at some point, that depends on everyone. I believe
that with or without globalization there will always be some people left behind
and benefits won’t always reach everyone equally. However, I think that this
isn’t a strong enough reason to give up on trying to have an integration of the
world’s economies, cultures and societies.

● Cultural homogenization - loss of cultural diversity which leads to erosion of local

traditions and identities.
○ Answer - It is possible but I don’t think that can totally happen. I think that
with some effort and boundaries, the increase of cultural awareness enables
people to learn, use it to a better cause, like the increase of tolerance, and
don’t necessarily lose their identity. I believe that spreading the different
cultures is necessary for the contribution to ending xenophobia and is the
most important part.
If we restrict ourselves to the knowledge of our country, we won't ever have the opportunity
to learn about new ideas that could actually work and help our country to evolve. I think
giving a chance to others is always the best choice.
