Activity 1: What is Globalization?

Lesson Objective: This lesson will allow students to develop a nuanced definition of
globalization in order to begin to understand the processes of globalization. Students will view a
video and develop their own definition of globalization. Watch the video clip defining this
concept and use the information presented to answer the questions below.

TED-Ed “What is Globalization?” http://ed.ted.com/on/F2HX0akU

1. What are some causes of globalization?

 Improved access to media with the invention and distribution of radios and TVs on a
global scale, people had better access to information, which leads to the desire to
explore the world.
 Improvements in the transport of goods not only human transport facilities are crucial
for globalization, also the transportation of material goods contributes to the
globalization phenomenon. Before the globalization period started, goods have mainly
been traded in the countries in which they had been produced. However, with the
introduction of more liberal trade policies, the transport of food and other goods across
borders has been facilitated. Therefore, the demand of people for foreign food or other
things increased, which lead to a more interconnected trade behaviour across countries
and therefore contributed to a higher level of globalization.
 Internet on global scale the internet can be regarded as one of the biggest technological
achievement of the human race. It facilitates local and also global communication to
such a degree that a world without the internet would not be thinkable for most people
in our nowadays society. The internet also vastly improved the access to global
information from different media channels. Thus, the internet gives people the
opportunity to get a more comprehensive view of the world in general.
2. What is an example and effect of economic globalization?

Example: Multinational corporations operate on a global scale, with satellite offices and
branches in numerous locations. The European Union is an economic and political union of 28
countries. (International Exports)

Effect:
Globalization facilitates trade One important advantage of globalization is that it facilitates
global trade. Due to climatic conditions and several other factors, countries usually specialize in
the production of certain goods. Therefore, through the optimization and specialization in
certain goods, every country can produce in the most efficient manner and in turn produce
large amounts of goods. In turn, these goods can be traded with other countries, which can
improve the income and wealth levels of several countries worldwide. While in the average
developing economy the poor as well as the wealthy benefit from globalization, in many
advanced economies globalization often has little effect on the incomes of the poor. But
government policies matter in making the benefits of globalization more inclusive.

3. What is an example and effect of political globalization?

Example; Solve Global Problems like Climate Change

Effect:
As the 21st Century progresses, the problem of climate change become more
and more pressing to solve.
Many nations claim that they alone can do very little to solve climate change. They will often
cite that they’re only responsible for a tiny percentage of global carbon emissions (this is very
common to hear in Australian politics) an effective way to solve climate change is to create a
global pact where all nations (which each account for only a small amount of carbon emissions)
come together and agree to targets and standards for reducing emissions. Attempts have been
made to address this – such as in the Copenhagen and Paris climate accords, although it’s
widely believed that these accords fall far too short and will not prevent catastrophic climate
change. Nonetheless, if this problem will be solved, it’s likely to only occur at a global
multinational level.
4. What is an example and effect of cultural globalization?

Example:   Spread of Foods and Dishes

Effect: Today, recipes and spices from around the world are commonplace in multicultural
societies. We can eat Chinese, Indian, Japanese, and American foods from a range of
restaurants in most world cities. However, remember that food is just one part of culture. The
deeper elements of cultures are the values and beliefs that cultural groups hold.  There are a
number of negative impacts globalization has had on cultural diversity, including the influence
multinational corporations have on promoting a consumer culture, exploitation of workers and
markets and influencing societal values. This promotes a homogeneous set of values and
beliefs.

5. According to the video, who benefits from globalization? Explain your answer.

According to the video the gains brought about by globalization, every country can be
benefiting especially those in industrialized countries. Yet the gains are unevenly distributed,
both between and within countries. Mainly people in places such as China, India, Indonesia,
and Brazil, along with the world’s top 1 percent.  Two countries that are the biggest
beneficiaries of globalization are China and India. It might potentially offer developing countries
new opportunities for accelerating economic growth and internal development. But is the
globalization profit divided equally, in general, has greatly benefited from the globalization. The
disadvantage of  Globalization The oppression of weaker and poorer economies by those that
are more robust; “the rich get richer, the poor get poorer”

6. According to the video, who is challenged by the effects of globalization?

As globalization continues to shape worldwide interactions in commerce, technology,

and more, companies will need to understand both its benefits and challenges.
Multinational conglomerates see globalization in every aspect of business, even smaller
start-ups and entrepreneur-led businesses will be impacted. Globalization affects
businesses in a variety of ways:
 Increasing competition: Businesses that contend in the global marketplace will
naturally face competition from companies all over the world. Consumers demand ever-
higher quality and cheaper products, and when they have a global array of companies to
choose from, only those that evolve to supply what consumers want and need will
prosper. This increased competition means companies must keep up with cutting-edge
developments and stay assertive in the global marketplace to survive.
 Opening larger, more diverse markets: On the other hand, companies that open
themselves up to the global marketplace will naturally find a much larger market in
which to sell their services.
 Sharing knowledge: Similarly, the need for a centralized base of knowledge for
cooperating countries to work from means globalization results in a rapid transfer of
knowledge.

7. After watching this video, how would you define globalization?

Globalization is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and
governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment and
aided by information technology. Likewise, for centuries, people and corporations have invested
in enterprises in other countries. It affects our political, cultural, as well as economic it is
evitable.

8. When you think about your life, how have you benefitted from globalization?
Explain. Have you seen or experienced any negative consequences of
globalization?

The effects of Globalization on education bring faster developments in technology and

communications are foreseeing changes within school systems across the world as ideas,
values and knowledge, changing the roles of students and teachers. As a student, our
education has been globalization enhances my ability to acquire and utilize knowledge.
Globalization enhances my ability to access, assess, adopt, and apply knowledge, to think
independently to exercise appropriate judgment and to collaborate with others to make
sense of new situations. Globalisation is also affecting us in a negative way. Increased
transportation and the global shift of polluting manufacturing industries have resulted in
environmental degradation. Pollution is affecting people’s health and having a negative
impact on biodiversity levels globally.
