Jazz Practicum Warm-Up Lesson Plan

Objectives:
- The band will be able to play at a fortissimo dynamic with a round tone and confidence.
- The band will be able to play contrasting dynamics in a Bflat major scale on various
rhythms and articulations.
Procedure:
- Band will play a Bflat scale one octave up and down at a mf dynamic
- Band will play a B flat scale in half notes at a pp dynamic
- Band will play Bflat scale at a ff dynamic
- Band will play a concert bflat with a round tone and staggered breathing
- They will follow my hand to crescendo and decrescendo
- The band will play b flat on an accented eighth note every 2 beats
- Repeat at mf, pp, and ff dynamics
- Different sections will be assigned different dynamics to play based on their role in the
scale and the groups will switch with each repetition
- The whole note will play at pp
- The “boo dat” group will play at mf
- The “ dat dat da dat” group will play at ff
- I will sing all of these rhythms to the class
Assessment:
- Informal assessment will be sued by listening to the ensemble and providing verbal
feedback
- Will ask the students clarifying questions to gage their engagement
