POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

The UJ’s educational policy, General Regulation and Faculty Regulations, is applicable and is available for scrutiny at the faculty
office.

Plagiarism
Dishonesty and plagiarism are not tolerated and will be punished.

• Plagiarism is the verbatim (word-for-word) use of another’s work and presenting it as if it were one’s own.

2
It is important to acknowledge any thoughts, ideas and information which are not your own. It is also important to use a standard form
of referencing to provide all relevant information that will help any person who may be interested to read further about the information.
As a result, you need to keep an accurate record of collecting your data.
• You will be required to cite your source(s), especially when referring to an item within your text. You are also required to
indicate the reference where the citation can be found at the end of your work.
• The different lecturers within the University may require you to use a particular (or different) way of citation. It is therefore
important for you to enquire and adhere to the requirements set by your lecturers.
• The proper procedures are laid down by the University and the Faculty is responsible for strategies that address means of
preventing, monitoring and handling acts of plagiarism.

Copyright issues are handled in accordance with DALRO principles and procedures.

Electronic reports of your work may be assessed using appropriate software to check against plagiarism.

Grievance Procedure
You must be able to follow procedures, solve problems and manage conflict. The Faculty’s grievance procedure should be followed
in case of any dissatisfaction or grievance. Therefore, firstly, if you experience any problems in this module, please contact the lecturer
or faculty officer as soon as possible so that we can find an appropriate solution. If a satisfactory agreement is not reached, then,
secondly, you may consult with the Head of the Department, then with the Vice Dean or with the Dean of the Faculty.

3
Sick Tests
The learner should bring a valid doctor’s note as soon as possible after missing an assessment (within 7days).

A fraudulent doctor’s note will result in disciplinary action being taken against the student by the university

Class Attendance
Class attendance is compulsory

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
There is no Pre-requisite subject required for this module.

The following learning is assumed to be in place:

• Competence in using a ruler and a compass to accurately construct diagrams occurring in Grade 12 Geometry.

DURATION OF MODULE
The module duration is one semester, approximately 14 weeks.

PURPOSE OF MODULE
The purpose of this offering is for the learner to become competent in the use of a drawing board and associated instruments to

MODULE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this module you should be able to do the following:

• Be familiar with the field of technical drawing

• Understand the graphic language
• Be familiar with information on drawings in a given context
• Be able to draw using numerous important construction techniques
• Apply two conventions of presenting an object in two-dimensions

SECTION C: ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES

ASSESSMENT OPPORTUNITIES, WEIGHTS AND PASSING CRITERIA

When writing tests and examinations, it is imperative that the student is able to identify herself/himself positively to the
invigilator. If the student card has a faded picture, it is the student’s responsibility to replace the damage or lost student
card (suggestion: in the event of an emergency bring along your ID document).

This is a continuous evaluation course, with no final exam. This implies that tests and assignments will be more frequent as
compared to other subjects. A portfolio containing all the tests and assignments done during the course may be required at
the end of the semester, subject to the discretion of your lecturer.

Assessment of technical drawings will take cognisance of correctness, neatness, accuracy, line-work and dimensions
according to SANS 0111.

Coursework

A minimum of four tests will be written; one after completion of each section. The tests will be written on (one on orthographic
Projection, one on isometric projection, and the other two on sectional drawing of components and assemblies), each tests
count towards the final mark. The remaining assessments will comprise of assignments determined by the lecturer.
Students have to obtain minimum 50% final marks to pass this subject.

The table below shows the detailed assessment contributions to the final mark for this module.

GRADUATE ATTRUBUTES RELEVANT TO MODULE
The graduate is able to demonstrate competence in the graduate attribute 1 to 10. The graduate attributes are stated
generically and may be assessed in various engineering disciplinary or cross-disciplinary contexts in a provider-based or
simulated practice environment. Words and phrases having specific meaning are defined in this document or in the ECSA
document E-01-P.

This module does not assess any Graduate attribute but prepares students for Graduate Attribute 8 which is assessed
in Capstone design module for both Civil and Structures groups.
