 POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

The MUT’s educational policy, General Regulation and Faculty Regulations, is applicable and is
available for scrutiny at the faculty office.

Plagiarism

Dis-honesty and plagiarism are not tolerated and will be punished.

 Plagiarism is the verbatim (word-for-word) use of another’s work and presenting it as if it were
one’s own.
It is important to acknowledge any thoughts, ideas and information which are not your own. It is also
important to use a standard form of referencing to provide all relevant information that will help any
person who may be interested to read further about the information. As a result, you need to keep an
accurate record of collecting your data.
 You will be required to cite your source(s), especially when referring to an item within your
text. You are also required to indicate the reference where the citation can be found at the end
of your work.
 The different lecturers within the University may require you to use a particular (or different)
way of citation. It is therefore important for you to enquire and adhere to the requirements set
by your lecturers.
 The proper procedures are laid down by the University and the Faculty is responsible for
strategies that address means of preventing, monitoring, and handling acts of plagiarism.
Copyright issues are handled in accordance with DALRO principles and procedures.
Electronic reports of your work may be assessed using appropriate software to check against plagiarism.
For the Mechanical Engineering Design II Project, the maximum allowable similarity is 15 %.

Mechanical Engineering Design II – MEDS201

Grievance Procedure

You must be able to follow procedures, solve problems and manage conflict. The Faculty’s grievance
procedure should be followed in case of any dissatisfaction or grievance. Therefore, firstly, if you
experience any problems in this module, please contact the lecturer or faculty officer as soon as possible
so that we can find an appropriate solution. If a satisfactory agreement is not reached, then, secondly,
you may consult with the Head of the Department, then with the Deputy Dean or with the Dean of the
Faculty.

Sickness during an assessment

In the event an assessment being missed due to an acceptable reason (e.g. sickness), proof of the reason
must be supplied promptly to the responsible lecturer. In the event of sickness, this means that a valid
doctor’s note must be produced. Please be aware that a doctor’s note must stand up to MUT scrutiny. This
is due to there being much abuse in this area in recent past. Also, a doctor’s note must indicate
incapacitation for 2 days or more. A 1-day sick note will be interpreted as butterflies due to test nerves!
Therefore a 1-day sick note will not be considered as a valid excuse for absenteeism. A fraudulent doctor’s
note will, most definitely end in disciplinary action. Most of the time, this results in a student being
suspended from studies.

Two tests will be written during the semester for this module, all the marks of which will contribute
towards a semester mark. (The remaining marks will come from projects and assignments). In the event of
valid absenteeism, the student must report to the corresponding Lecturer within 48 hours from the day of
assessment.

Class attendance

It is compulsory that the student attend all classes. The notes and other forms of study material will be
available for the students to view.

Mechanical Engineering Design II – MEDS201

practical way for more advanced problems in future modules.

 Learners are expected to be punctual, attend all lectures, and not to distract other learners during
lectures. Announcements are made during the semester on an ongoing basis. This important
information will not be heard by an absent learner.
 It is recommended that students check their Blackboard regularly as announcements regarding
this module will be posted there.
 After the commencement of a lecture, learners arriving late have 10 minutes to join the class
(Please enter the venue from the back of the class and do not disturb other learners). After this
time a learner is deemed to be late and is requested not to join the class.
 It is strongly recommended that learners complete all class activities / illustrated examples /
exercises to get an idea of how well the module content is understood. This will help to identify
possible problem areas, which can then be clarified by your lecturer.
 This module is a dynamic course due to its practical basis. Learners are required to be involved
in the class activities.
 Owing to the dynamic nature of the module, no formal tutorial periods are scheduled but run on
an ongoing basis during lectures.
 The module is examinable. Learners are required to obtain a minimum course mark of 40 % to
be allowed to write the examination.
 A learner who will not be present for an assessment must inform the lecturer 24 hours before
the assessment is conducted. The learner must then apply in writing for consideration and
submit this application together with a valid Doctors Letter within 48 hours of the assessment
(A one-day sick note is not accepted). If these requirements are met the learner’s absence from
an assessment will be taken into account in the compilation of the final mark.

 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A prospective learner for Mechanical Engineering Design II (MEDS201):

 Directly requires competence in topics taught in Mechanical Engineering Drawing I and

Strength of Materials II.

February 2022
Mechanical Engineering Design II – MEDS201

 MODULE NQF LEVEL

NQF level 5
Credits 12
Study field Mechanical Engineering
Subfield Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

 DURATION OF MODULE
The module duration is one semester, approximately 14 weeks.

 PURPOSE OF MODULE
The primary purpose of this module is to introduce learners to the principles and methodology of
Mechanical Engineering Design. Learners will learn basic principles on how to design mechanical items
as per the lecture/work schedule for this Module. A Semester project will evaluate skills obtained
during the lecture/ work schedule.

 MODULE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this module you should be able to do the following:

 Think logically and apply theoretical knowledge to solve practical problems.

 Handle uncertainty and make technical decisions.
Design combines scientific principles with good practical judgment, draws on and extends the work
done in other subjects and is much more than just the ability to put numbers into equations and obtain
numerical answers. After understanding the need which a design has to meet, creatively producing
various options and choosing the best one. The technical details must then be finalized by selecting the
best possible materials, standard, and final sizes, performing the required technical calculations.

Mechanical Engineering Design II – MEDS201

 SECTION C: ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES

 ASSESSMENT OPPORTUNITIES, WEIGHTS AND PASSING CRITERIA

 A minimum of two assessments will be conducted in this module. Two major written tests
(maximum of one additional test for an equal opportunity if missed one test due to sickness,
subject to the lecturer’s discretion), and a project.
The written tests will be ‘Closed book’ written under strict examination conditions. Communication
and the interchange of notes or books during a test are not allowed. As it is important to find all the
necessary information quickly, tag relevant pages of your books. Integration of different subjects is an
important part of the design. Therefore, a single test question may cover more than one learning unit of
the syllabus.

 In this module, a minimum of two (2) written tests. Each test will contribute 15 to 20 % of the
course mark.
 A take-home assignment(s) that contributes 5 % to the course. The assignments may be up to
the lecturer’s discretion
 One (1) typed and bound project report. The combined marks from presentations, consultations,
drawings, and project reports will contribute 40 % towards the course mark. Individual or group
project presentations to a panel will contribute 10 % while, the final report (including
consultations and drawings) will contribute 30 % to the project.
Each learner will complete all design projects individually or in groups (subjected to the lecturer’s
discretion). The design projects will be presented in groups to a panel of assessors at the final lecture
week, to prepare learners for the final year when some of the graduate attributes must be fulfilled.
Project topics will be of an industrial nature and will encourage learners to make use of both academic
and industrial research for information on how to solve the problems which will arise. Evaluation is
conducted strictly in accordance with the guidelines given in the Project description document. The
overall quality of your design and drawings must be in accordance with acceptable engineering

February 2022
Mechanical Engineering Design II – MEDS201

standards. Projects are semester-long and typically need 10 to 14 weeks for completion. The projects are
submitted on a progressive submission basis based on communications from the lecturer. The rules for
project work submission are as per the question paper submitted at the start of the semester. Any
projects which appear unjustifiably similar will be disqualified resulting in the Learner(s) failing the
module. No late submissions for the project will be accepted.
Note: The Project must be completed in accordance with requirements as stipulated in the project
question paper and described in this learner guide. Failure to comply with these requirements will result
in the student(s) failing the project, and as a result, failing the module.
The learner is required to pass both the theory portion of the course as well as the project portion of the
course. This means that a 40% sub-minimum mark must be obtained for both the theory (tests and
assignments) and project portions of the course (design reports and presentation). The module may
have graduate attributes attached to it to prepare learners for the final year, which is summative. Learner
(s) will therefore be required to show competency in these graduate attributes.

If a learner passes the theory portion and passes the project portion of the course, the learner passes the
course. In this case, the final mark will be the combined marks of both theory and project in their
respective percentage amounts. If a learner fails the theory portion and fails the project portion of the
course, the learner fails the course. In this case, the final mark will be the combined marks of both
theory and project in their respective percentage amounts. The learner is required to pass both the theory
portion (tests and assignments) of the course as well as the project portion. No late assessments will be
accepted without a valid medical certificate and/or explanatory letter along with the necessary
documents.

 SAQA CRITICAL CROSS-FIELD OUTCOMES

 During the study of Mechanical Engineering Design II (MEDS201), it is intended that the
following important cross-field outcomes are achieved:
 Critical and analytical thinking – existing systems will be conceptually broken down
into basic components and then basic theory used to explain their observed
performance; also effects of different variables will be investigated both experimentally
and theoretically to predict future performance
 Team working – Throughout the course, each student will belong to some team; the
teams will be working on various assignments either in or out of class on a competitive
basis. Apart from marks, there will be other rewards for criteria to be communicated
during the course of the semester
 Communication enhancement - Teams will be reporting their results both orally to the
class and formally to the lecturer according to the given guidelines.
 IT skills and competency – Use of e-blackboard and the internet will be a major part of
the course. All homework for example will have to be submitted and one-to-one
feedback given electronically. The use of Excel Spreadsheets for the solution of
integrated engineering problems is mandatory
 Integration and Entrepreneurship development – First at the human resource level,
teams will sometimes be constituted by the lecturer to exploit diversity; At the problem-
solving level, the case studies used will involve knowledge from other areas like Fluid
Mechanics, Economics, Health and Safety, Chemistry, Political economy, etc; many
problems will be about observed local conditions with a view to encouraging students to
start suitable small scale engineering businesses after graduation.
