Policies and procedures

The UJ’s educational policy, General Regulation and Faculty Regulations is applicable and
is available for scrutiny at the faculty office.

Plagiarism

Dishonesty and plagiarism are not tolerated and will be punished.

• Plagiarism is the verbatim (word-for-word) use of another’s work and presenting it as

if it were one’s own.

It is important to acknowledge any thoughts, ideas, and information that are not your own. It
is also important to use a standard form of referencing to provide all relevant information that
will help any person who may be interested to read further about the information. As a result,
you need to keep an accurate record of collecting your data.

• You will be required to cite your source(s), especially when referring to an item
within your text. You are also required to indicate the reference where the citation
can be found at the end of your work.

• The different departments within the University may require you to use a particular
(or different) way of citation. It is therefore important for you to enquire and adhere to
the requirements set by your departments.

• The proper procedures are laid down by the University and the Faculty is responsible
for strategies that address means of preventing, monitoring, and handling acts of
plagiarism.

Copyright issues are handled in accordance with DALRO principles and procedures.

Grievance procedure

You must be able to follow procedures, solve problems and manage conflict. The Faculty’s
grievance procedure should be followed in case of any dissatisfaction or grievance.
Therefore, firstly, if you experience any problems in this module, please contact the lecturer
or faculty officer as soon as possible so that we can find an appropriate solution. If a
satisfactory agreement is not reached, then, secondly, you may consult with the Head of the

7
Department, then with the Deputy Dean or with the Dean of the Faculty.

Sick tests

The learner must inform the module Lecturer before an assessment is undertaken that
he/she will be unable to undergo the assessment.
The learner should apply in writing for an ill-health test/assessment. A prescribed application
form should be completed and submitted with the necessary proof (e.g., ill-health certificate,
doctor’s note or affidavit, etc.).

You will only be allowed to write a sick test if a health certificate or death
certificate is given to your lecturer, not more than a week after the test is
missed. Students given in a health certificate longer than a week ago from the test missed
will be penalised.
There will be a sick test for every test written. The sick test will be written 2 weeks after the
class test was written or if the lecturer decides otherwise. The sick test dates will be
announced.

Class attendance

As you will know, time is of the essence and punctuality is, therefore, vital to ensure that time
is used optimally. It is important that you personally attend lectures in this course – it is
definitely not the ideal to study off other people’s notes! Attending all the lectures is very
important as we appreciate your active participation, insight and opinions.
Un-prepared tests will be given in class and it will count marks towards your semester
marks. You will receive unplanned class tests during the semester. These tests will make up
the same mark as for the main test.

“Please note that lecturers and HODs are not allowed to exempt students from
classes. Lecturers could refuse that students write the test if they did not
attend classes”

Your attention is drawn to AR 5.11.1 “class attendance for undergraduate

students is compulsory.”

8
Support services and resources

To ensure that you have all the support you need to successfully complete this course, we
have made the resources listed below available to you. We are confident that, if you follow
our suggestions for studying this course and use all these resources to their full potential,
you will do very well.

1. Prescribed reading/textbook/ reading package

Prescribed sources for AutoCAD Civil are as follows:

1. Beginning AutoCAD 2016, Cheryl R. Shrock, Industrial Press
2. Additional handouts by module lecturer.

Additional recommended reading for this course:

1 The AutoCAD Book. Drawing, Modeling, and Applications, Including Release 14, James M.
KirkPatrick, Prentice Hall

2. Library

Please contact the librarian for information on different resources available and
additional reading under the title of Thermodynamics.

3. Learning guide
The purpose of the learning guide is to support your learning process. It serves as
a map of material available in the different resources.

4. Additional requirements
• Learners are expected to present punctually and attend all lectures and not to disturb
other learners during lectures. Announcements are made during the semester on an
ongoing basis. This important information will not be heard by an absent learner.
• After the commencement of a lecture, learners arriving late have 10 minutes to join
the class (Please enter the venue and do not disturb the other learners). After this
time a learner is deemed to be late and is requested not to join the class.
• It is strongly recommended that learners complete all class activities / illustrated
examples/exercises to get an idea of how well the Module content is understood. This
will help to identify possible problem areas which can then be clarified by your
Lecturer.
Learners are advised to make use of the consultation times with the Lecturer as per
the schedule fixed to the Lecturer’s office door.
• A learner who will not be present for an assessment must inform the lecturer 24
hours before the assessment is conducted. The learner must then apply in writing for

9
an alternative assessment and submit this application together with a valid Doctors
Letter within 24 hours of the assessment. If these requirements are met the learner
will be granted an alternative assessment opportunity.
• Learners are required to sign the acknowledgment Slip at the end of the learner guide
thereby acknowledging that they have read and understood the learner guide for this
Module. The slip should then be neatly cut from the page and returned to the
Lecturer.

Section B: Information sheet on academic
programme quality

Entry requirements
There is no Pre-requisite subject required for Computer Aided Drawing 1B in the Bachelor of
Engineering Technology

The following learning is assumed to be in place:

• Competence in using a ruler and a compass to accurately construct diagrams
occurring in Grade 12 Geometry.

Module NQF level

NQF level 5
Credits 7
Study field Engineering
Subfield Civil Engineering Technology

Duration of module

The module duration is one semester, approximately 15 weeks.

Purpose of the module

The purpose of this offering is for the learner to become competent in using AutoCAD
software and get familiarized using software as a drawing instrument. Furthermore, the
modules purpose is for the learner to become competent in using the software to compile
Civil Engineering drawings.

11
Module learning outcomes
At the end of this module you should be able to do the following in AutoCAD

• Be familiar with the field of technical drawing

• Understand the graphic language
• Be familiar with information on drawings in a given context
• Be able to draw using numerous important construction techniques
• Be able to detail structural drawings
• Be able to draw plans
• Be able to draw Civil Engineering drawings
• Be able to detail structural drawings

Teaching and learning strategy

An integrated teaching and learning approach is followed in this module. This means that
learning is facilitated by more than one support resource, e.g., face-to-face contact, self-
study, research practices, and design projects. Each is complementary to the other.

This is a continuous evaluation module, thus meaning that there is no exam for
the module. All of the marks you compile throughout the semester will be your
final mark. In order to pass the module, you will have to get a semester mark
of 50%. You will be granted a final assessment opportunity to pass the module
if you have between 40% and 48% for your semester mark. If you receive 50%
for the final assessment, your semester mark will remain as it is marking it. If
you have less than 39% for your semester mark it means that you fail the
module and have to repeat it next year. 75% for your semester mark will grant
you a distinction.

Section D: Facilitation of learning

Introduction

Learning in this module takes place on the basis of attending formal lectures in class,
performing simulated evaluations during the class and self-study in the form of working
through technical problems in a learner’s own time. Answers for these problems and
consultation with the Lecturer are given to assist the learners in the development of their
abilities.
